- Led the National League in Games Started in 1986 (39), 1988 (36), 1989 (37) and 1990 (35).
- Drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 1982 June draft out of Tennessee Wesleyan College (Athens, TN). Was 123-90 with an ERA of 3.94. Member of the 1990 World Series champion Reds.
- Nicknamed "Mr. Perfect" as he is the first and to date only Cincinnati Reds pitcher to throw a perfect game (September 16, 1988 against the Los Angeles Dodgers).
