Every generation deserves its own fresh new take on the romantic comedy. The problem is that nowadays this genre has become marginalized and neglected for romanticizing abusive relationships and encouraging destructive behavioral patterns. So young directors have decided to disguise their new romcoms as movies about searching for oneself and making sense of oneself before they can feel comfortable in a relationship. Spanish filmmaker Andrea Bagney's feature debut Ramona, which premiered at the 2022 Karlovy Vary Film Festival, is no exception to this rule. The film explores this intricate struggle to understand what's next in the life of a young woman. It's filmed in old fashioned black & white inspired by classic French cinema. After a couple of years in New York, Ramona (Lourdes Hernández) returns to her home of Madrid with an intention to start everything fresh. She has an important audition which could help her budding acting career, but...

A woman and a man meet in a bar: it’s the start of many a good story, and writer-director Andrea Bagney takes it in an amusing direction in Ramona, her feature debut. The black-and-white Spanish comedy-drama is an enjoyable work that world premiered at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, benefitting from a sparky central turn from Lourdes Hernández, best known in Spain as the singer Russian Red.
She’s the titular Ramona, sometimes known as ‘Ona,’ who strikes up a conversation with an older guy (Bruno Lastra) over coffee. Coffee quickly turns into shots, and beers, and the rest…
Watching these two drunkenly put the world to rights about everything from social media to recycling is a joy; so it’s a bit of a pang when the mood shifts to slightly more dramatic territory. It transpires that the man, Bruno, is the director of a film that...

FBI Special Agents Mulder and Scully are about to unravel a mystery that dates back to the very beginning of “the X-Files” in a brand new five-issue comic miniseries, The X-Files: Year Zero, debuting this July from Idw Publishing.
From the Press Release:
In its first year at Idw, The X-Files Season 10 has pitted FBI special agents Mulder and Scully against monsters, cults, conspiracies, and more; and now the duo are back in an original tale suited for both X-Files diehards and mystery fans alike!
In the 1940s a shadowy informant known as “Mr. Xero” directed the FBI to a number of paranormal cases that would soon be classified as “X-Files,” which were reserved for the improbable and unexplainable. When faced with an eerily similar “Mr. Zero” in the present, Agent Mulder resolves to uncover the truth about who this mystery person is and his connection to these cases.

What makes for a great midnight movie? It’s sort of hard to pin down, one of those “you know it when you see it” sorts of things. Yet looking at the best of this year’s Tribeca Midnight slate, a few commonalities emerge. Honestly, I think it boils down to one thing – a midnight movie needs to keep you awake. It’s got to be effortlessly entertaining, able to keep you energized well after your bedtime. Many of the best of them are hilarious, sending you into peals of raucous laughter almost nonstop. Others are frightful, using fear and the thrill of the cheap scare to keep you on edge. More than either of those, however, the best midnight movies are bonkers. Three of Tribeca’s selection this year are brashly, delightfully loopy. I’ll start with Frankenstein’s Army, a zombie-adjacent found-footage film from Dutch director Richard Raaphorst. It...

For some reason everything in life seems to be broken down by gender. Negative or positive, everyone is assigned a role by society. As gamers we are often generalised as being nerdy overweight men, and while in my own case this is true it obviously isn’t for all, you need look no further than this very site to see there are female gamers.
The very nature of me pointing that out implies it needs to have some light shone on it and I am in fact covering myself from charges of sexism, whilst in process showing sexism; this could be put down to political correctness gone mad or it could be assigned to the fact I’m a middle class white man who’s scared of confrontation with anyone.
With the fairer sex and gaming there is often the knee jerk reaction to assume that there is a negative portrayal of women in games.

An anonymous artist transformed Russian Red Army soldiers from a monument in the city of Sofia, in Bulgaria, into versions of Superman, Captain America, Wonder Woman, Robin, Ronald McDonald, Santa Claus, and the Joker.
The giant monument was built to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Russian ‘liberation’ of Bulgaria in 1944. It is regarded as the prime example of the forceful socialist-realism of the period.
The place of honor goes to a Red Army soldier atop a column, surrounded by animated cast-iron sculptural groups depicting determined, gun-waving soldiers and members of the proletariat. But those characters have been painted over, along with graffiti at the bottom saying “Moving With The Times” in Bulgarian.
We put this up just to make sure nobody thinks these are new costumes for the reboot.

The singer/designer knocks it out of the park with her amazing casual look!
Spotted at the Us Open this weekend looking nothing but fantastic and amazing: singer/designer Gwen Stefani! Omg, so to quote Rachel Zoe, “I Die” for Gwen anyway, but can we just talk about how incredibly cool she looks? Who else could rock casual chic like this?!? Let’s break the look down, shall we?
First of all, let’s talk about the casual high school-approved straight hair with her bangs twisted away from her face into a I-don’t-have-time-for-it braid. This could look tragic on almost anyone else but her. Then we have her trademark beauty look translated for a more casual feel: perfectly arched eyebrows, black cateye makeup and her signature red lip looking like sheer perfection. Finally, it looks like she threw on hubby Gavin Rossdale’s track jacket and a...

Colleen Ballinger still has no clue how it happened. At 2009's start, the 23-year-old was living in California, working at Disneyland and making YouTube videos as Miranda—a delusional, arrogant, tone-deaf young girl under the username "mirandasings08" out of her parents' house in Santa Barbara. "I thought, It's an inside joke, it's for friends, no one will ever see it," Ballinger recalls. Then virtually overnight, the videos went viral. According to Ballinger, the 'Miranda Sings' videos went from 20 to 100 views to 100,000 in a single day. She started getting more fan mail (and hate mail) than she could read, along with requests to perform on Broadway stages. She was sought out by venues in San Francisco, Los Angeles, London, and even Australia. "It just exploded," she remembers, still stunned by her sudden popularity.A Meme is BornTalk to three people who run in musical theater circles, and at least one (if...

Russian officials may want to add a footnote that Red Square could be rennamed for Angelina Jolie, as the Salt starlet looked ravishing in a slinky red dress at her movie premiere in Moscow, Russia this weekend.Jolie called the get-up "Russian Red" as she touted her spy flick. She told Reuters that "as much as there are bad guys that are Russian, there are also heroes that are Russian in this film," looking to thwart any tension the film's plot may cause. What a peacemaker.

New Europe Film Season, Edinburgh
As the EU expands, so too do film festivals that aim to present new European cinema in all its gritty glory. This year's tales of urban survival and cultural and geographical displacement come mainly from central and eastern Europe, with a sneaky entry from the not-quite-in-the-club-but-nearly Croatia, which offers Balkan war drama The Blacks. You can delve into the murky depths of the Warsaw criminal underworld in Snow White And Russian Red, or discover the sweet and surreal stylings of Latvian Signe Baumane's short films. There's also Zero, a brilliantly twisted tale of 24 stories of revenge, jealousy and despair in 24 hours from Polish director Pawel Borowski, and, from Hungary comes the Mike Leigh-esque I Am Not Your Friend, about the dark side of modern Budapest.

(Scroll Down For Trailer, AP Article Below) Los Angeles - The `80s were good to John Cusack. He was a teenager then, racking up acting credits in films such as "Sixteen Candles," "The Sure Thing," "Better Off Dead" and "Say Anything." Now 43, Cusack returns to that storied decade on screen and off as the star and producer of "Hot Tub Time Machine," a comic romp that brings four friends back to their youthful glory days via a mysterious Jacuzzi powered by Russian Red Bull and repaired by a cryptic Chevy Chase. (Read reviews from the New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, Time.com, and the La Times.) In the film, opening Friday, Cusack and Chase, along with Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke and Crispin Glover, find themselves at a ski resort for Winterfest '86, where Poison is the headlining band and Day-Glo is the...

At the annual Polish film festival, a pair of sensational new films – Mall Girls and Snow White, Russian Red – give a glimpse of life in post-communist, post-eu accession Poland
When it comes to the Poles in their midst, your average Brit's grip on the facts tends to be a little shaky. There are more than a million Poles in residence in the UK, aren't there? Or is the number closer to half that? Some say they're toughing out the recession; others declare they are being lured home in droves by repatriation campaigns. It seems as if there's a Polski sklep on every high street, but where the hell's a shop selling kiełbasa when you need one?
But if most of us are unsure what it's like for Poles in Britain, we're utterly in the dark as to what it's like back in Poland. A pair of sensational (if not sensationalising...

London's Kinoteka Polish film festival will show the controversial director Roman Polanski's short films and early works
The Kinoteka Polish film festival has chosen its eighth annual incarnation in the UK for a retrospective dedicated to the country's most famous, and controversial, film-maker, Roman Polanski.
Timed to coincide with the release of his latest film, The Ghost Writer, Kinoteka will show a season of Polanski's short films, as well as early works in which he collaborated with the composer and jazz pianist Krzysztof Komeda.
As Polanski is still under house arrest in Switzerland, the festival is facing the controversy head-on: it will lead the Polanski segment with a screening of Marina Zenovich's 2008 documentary Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired, which "challenges many of the myths which have built up" around the director's case. The films run in conjunction with an exhibition of rare Polanski film posters from across the globe.

More Berlinale coverage
Berlin -- Stephen Daldry will likely be holding his breath before Friday's Berlinale premiere of "The Reader."
The Oscar-nominated drama starring Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes already has drawn the slings and arrows of U.S. critics for its mixing of an erotic love story with the history of the Holocaust. Berlin will be the film's first screening in front of a German audience and Sturm und Drang from the local press seems inevitable.
But when it comes to the film's boxoffice prospects here, Daldry, "Reader" producers the Weinstein Co. and local distributor Senator Film can take heart. German audiences are still hungry for Holocaust drama.
"The Reader" is the latest in a seemingly unprecedented wave of films that deal, in some way, with the Nazi horror and its aftermath.
From Bryan Singer's "Valkyrie," to Paul Schrader's "Adam Resurrected," from Daniel Craig starrer "Defiance" to...
