As one of the most innovative and talented creators in mainstream showbiz, Adi Shankar proudly flaunts his pop culture fanboy cred through his projects. But most importantly, he knows how to amalgamate the good bits of popular IPs of yesteryear with contemporary sensibilities seamlessly and deliver a unique work of art at the same time. His collaboration with Netflix has proved to be a blessing for the streaming service, which has resulted in the creation of not only arguably one of the best animated franchises in recent years in the form of the Castlevania series, but also a better live-action satire of the oversaturation of superhero culture than The Boys, with the underrated The Guardians of Justice. With the recently released six-episode animated series Captain Laserhawk: Blood Dragon Remix, an adaptation of Ubisoft’s Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, Adi Shankar expands his Bootleg Universe (fan-made adaptations of popular IPs) on Netflix,...

It’s been a long time coming, but Capcom’s Devil May Cry is finally coming to Netflix in a new anime adaptation. Adi Shankar (the Executive Producer of Netflix’s Castlevania series) is involved, with the show being animated by South Korean animation studio Studio Mir. Netflix dropped a new teaser for the show earlier this afternoon.
This isn’t the first Devil May Cry anime adapation. Longtime fans will remember the 12-episode Ova (which Michael covered a few years back). There hasn’t been any info as of yet regarding the new series, nor is there an official release date. However, the teaser by Netflix lists Devil May Cry as “coming soon.”
Netflix wasn’t done there, as they also revealed the first look at Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, which is being produced by Legendary with Crystal Dynamics, with Tasha Huo as the showrunner on the series.

Let's get something out of the way first. "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always" is not where you want to start as a newcomer to the "Power Rangers" franchise. It is also not a wildly different reimagining of the '90s juggernaut — so don't expect a gritty reboot like the Joseph Kahn and Adi Shankar short film. Instead, what this offers is a nostalgia-filled special that is not particularly different from the many, many, many other anniversary crossover specials the franchise has done over the years.
What does make "Once & Always" different and notable is that it is entirely focused on the original "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" iteration rather than trying to tie in the past with the future. And even if this is still as cheesy as the original '90s show, it does have some edge to it that makes it stand out — plus a loving tribute to fallen Rangers.

Photo: ‘The Guardians of Justice’ ‘The Guardians of Justice,’ borne from the mind of its creator, Adi Shankar, is essentially what he calls “a superhero motif.” While it cannot actually be a motif, it still shares thematic characteristics and is based in an illusory world of the fantastical. Shankar claims that ‘The Guardians of Justice,’ does not belong within the superhero genre, but that is wholly incorrect. This series which hinges itself entirely to the world of superhero films, shows, comics, books, and video games is a direct link to this genre. The show undertakes the task of offering not just a differing approach to this standard story-telling format, but additionally is a social commentary as well as an analysis of the genre in a realistic setting. The series boasts a unique vapor-wave animation style and hails from creator and executive producer Adi Shankar. Producers are Hélène Juguet, Hugo Revon and Gérard Guillemot. Bobbypills is the animation studio.
Netflix revealed that another Far Cry anime is in the works. Far Cry is a first-person shooter that debuted in 2004. The latest iteration, Far Cry 6, will feature Giancarlo Esposito and will drop in October. No additional details have been revealed for the Far Cry animated show.
The two projects add to Netflix’s growing slate of video game content.

Netflix has ordered an anime series based on the popular Ubisoft game “Far Cry,” as well as its offshoot “Captain Laserhawk.”
Both announcements were made Friday during the streaming service’s “Geeked Week” event.
There have been five “Far Cry” games, each revolving around the main character working against a fearsome dictator that controls a particular island or isolated region. “Far Cry 6,” which will see Giancarlo Esposito voice the main antagonist (he has some experience there), is due out in October. The first game was released in 2004.
The series will be produced by Ubisoft’s Hélène Juguet, Hugo Revon and Gérard Guillemot.
“Captain Laserhawk,” from Adi Shankar, is based on “Far Cry 3” expansion “Blood Dragon.” “Laserhawk” features alter egos of Ubisoft characters in a highly referenced homage to the early 1980s.
Shankar is the creator and executive producer with Juguet, Revon and Guillemot once again producing. Bobbypills is the production studio.

Netflix has ordered a “Castlevania” spinoff series from the original show’s producers, the streaming service revealed Friday. The spinoff is focused on Maria Renard and Richter Belmont, the son of Sypha and Trevor, and set in 1792 France during the French Revolution.
The “Castlevania” franchise launched in the late 1980s as an action-adventure gothic horror video game series about vampire hunters. It was created and developed by Konami.
After many, many more installments, Netflix turned “Castlevania” into an anime series — the very first for the streaming service. The 10-episode fourth and final season premiered last month.
“Castlevania,” the series, is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, who’s trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepes himself. Its voice cast included James Callis, Emily Swallow, Matt Frewer, Tony Amendola and Alejandra Reynoso.

Exclusive: The upcoming 10-episode fourth season of Netflix’s anime series Castlevania will be its last, Deadline has learned. It will premiere May 13 (see key art below).

Castlevania was a key series in the evolution of Netflix’s original programming. It launched in July 2017 as the streamer’s first original anime series and the second adult animated comedy after F Is For Family. It quickly developed a devoted following and was well received by critics. The show’s second season scored a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and landed an IGN Award for Best Animated TV Series in 2018.

This year, several white voice actors from animated series have decided to forego their roles as characters of color in order for them to be recast, in some cases, to actors of color. Here are some examples of shows where this happened, from “Big Mouth” to “The Simpsons.”
Hank Azaria as Apu and Carl on “The Simpsons”
Azaria confirmed to reporters at Winter TCA earlier this year that he will no longer do the voice of Indian American convenience-store proprietor Apu Nahasapeemapetilon on “The Simpsons.” Film producer Adi Shankar previously said that the show plans to drop the character altogether. Azaria also did the voice of Carl, who was voiced by by Alex Désert in its last season premiere.
Jenny Slate as Missy on “Big Mouth”
The comedian said that “Black characters on an animated show should be played by Black people” when she gave up the role of Missy on the Netflix animated series.

Castlevania season 3 has come and gone. Long did fans wait for the third season of the animated series, and after just 10 half-hour episodes of monster-hunting adventures, we’re left to wait again. Unlike season 2, which tied up its Dracula storyline in a neat, blood-stained bow, season 3 leaves viewers with more questions than answers.
One of the central mysteries of the season is the origin and function of the Infinite Corridor, an alternate plane that contains doors to different points in time (and perhaps even dimensions) across the Castlevania universe. It’s with the Infinite Corridor that creepy Dracula acolyte Prior Sala hopes to open a door to Hell and bring the Dark Lord back from the dead.
Longtime fans of the Castlevania franchise will undoubtedly recognize the Infinite Corridor, which is taken straight from the games. It was first introduced in 2005’s Curse of Darkness as an alternate dimension where...

With every day that passes, Castlevania season 3 creeps ever closer.
Netflix has yet to announce an official release date for the new installment, but this past weekend, the online streaming giant posted a suitably stylish first-look image for the show’s third season, teasing old faces and new threats.
Embedded below, the HD pic features a pretty formidable foursome, though Carmilla is the only one we recognize off the bat. Castlevania fans will no doubt remember her villainous role all throughout season 2, and the fact that she’s back to reprise her part only portends all kinds of danger for Trevor Belmont. Moreover, that the other three characters are pictured front and center suggests they’ll each play an integral role in the story of Castlevania season 3, which Netflix describes as so:

If a now-deleted tweet from Netflix Nordic is any indication, the third installment of Castlevania will be on our screens as soon as next week.
Earlier today, the online streaming giant released a graphic detailing all of the many TV shows and movies headed to Netflix over the next four weeks, one of which was Castlevania season 3. Its official air date? December 1st, 2019, though the Powers That Be quickly pulled said tweet, casting doubt over the show’s Eta. We will, of course, keep you right up-to-date as more information comes to light.
Now entering its third year on the streaming service, Castelvania rose from humble beginnings: a four-episode season in which viewers were introduced to a grief-stricken Dracula, hell-bent on vengeance following the murder of his wife. Hoping to drive a stake through his heart is disgraced monster hunter Trevor Belmont, who hails from a family of vampire killers.

Adi Shankar has a long history of rebooting our favorite childhood franchises with new adult twists. Prior to his hiring on Netflix’s Castlevania series, Shankar made a name for himself by creating his own one-shot shorts that reimagined Mr. Rogers as a war hero or the Power Rangers as former child soldiers – each film a part of a larger “Bootleg Universe.” Now, the Indian-American filmmaker has set his sights on the Pokémon franchise.
Since its inception in the late 1990s, the popular media franchise has come under some criticism for its violent depiction of the super-powered creatures. Originally, Pokémon served no greater purpose than to be captured and collected, used only for fighting other monsters for status climbing and monetary reward.
The Pokémon anime did a great job of further exploring how the little critters affected the daily lives of humans, establishing their role as partners and friends to trainers,...

Ever since the news dropped back in August that Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth have pulled out of Star Trek 4 due to salary disputes, the S.J. Clarkson-helmed flick has been in a state of uncertainty, with neither Paramount Pictures nor the franchise’s regular cast having much to report in recent months.
But while John Cho is no exception, the actor is steadfast in his opinion that the project should happen, pleading his case in an interview with The Playlist:
“I think its an important part of American popular culture that speaks to America’s best impulses and I think that there will always be a place for Star Trek films and I just hope to be in it and there isn’t another totally different group of people! I’m bullish about it, and honestly, for personal reasons I suppose the last film has a cloud over it,...

Adi Shankar, the producer of Netflix’s Castlevania, has an interesting new project that he’s developing called Superman Vs. The Ku Klux Klan.
Deadline had a chance to talk to Shankar about this project and they explain that it was “indirectly energized by Bill Maher’s put-downs of comic book culture and comments about the late Stan Lee.”
When talking about the project, Shankar explained, “The comic-book/video game industry needs our Shakespeare in Love we need our Capote and Finding Neverland,” Shankur said, referring to acclaimed dramas that turned writers into screen characters. “The founders of nerd culture must be celebrated as much as the franchises they have given birth to. It’s our history. We also need to tell stories about how these myths have had a tangible impact on our material world. That’s where Superman vs Kkk comes in.”

Adi Shankar, the producer of Netflix’s Castlevania, says his upcoming project, Superman Vs. The Ku Klux Klan, has been indirectly energized by Bill Maher’s put-downs of comic book culture and comments about the late Stan Lee.
Shankar said the firebrand comedian’s appraisal of comic book culture as an example of “using our smarts on stupid stuff” was a welcomed jolt because it underlined the importance of burnishing the legacy and celebrating the pioneers of “nerd” culture to disprove the opinion that Maher expressed.

I actually had a lot of fun watching The Powerpuff Girls animated series with my kids back in the day. Now, thanks to producer Adi Shankar, we have a short film to share with you that envisions The Powerpuff Girls in a dark and gritty way called Powerpuff Girls: The Long Way Back.
Adi Shankar is the producer of the Castlevania animated series and he previously produced a few “bootleg” projects such as the Venom short Truth in Journalism, Power Rangers, The Punisher, and Judge Dredd: Superfiend.
This Powerpuff Girls short is the first in what will be a series of fan-made films made under a new project called “One-Shots Presents”. The purpose is to “showcase up and coming filmmakers who share our love of fandom.”
Here’s the synopsis for the short film:
Based on the cartoon , "Powerpuff Girls: The Long Way Back" is a live-action reimagining of our...

Mohammad Bin Salman and Vladimir Putin high-fiving wasn’t the only notable aspect of the G20 in Buenos Aires yesterday. Argentine news channel Crónica TV’s coverage of the event used an image of Apu from “The Simpsons” to announce the arrival of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, captioned with the words “Llegó Apu” (Apu arrives). The move has been widely criticized.
Among those to take notice is comedian and filmmaker Hari Kondabolu, whose documentary “The Problem With Apu” brought increased scrutiny to the portrayal of the Kwik-e-Mart clerk. Apu, last name Nahasapeemapetilon, has come to be seen in an increasingly negative light over the years, with some arguing that the character is doing more harm than good nearly 30 years after debuting on “The Simpsons.”
In an interview with IndieWire at the end of October, producer Adi Shankar said, “I got some disheartening news back, that I’ve verified from...

An Argentinian news outlet aired an image of “The Simpsons” character Apu when announcing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival in Buenos Aires for the G20 summit Thursday.
Cronica TV used an image of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon — a fictional Indian character (voiced by Hank Azaria) from the popular animated Fox series — alongside footage of Modi arriving by plane, with the text “Llegó Apu,” which translates from Spanish into English as, “Apu arrives.”
Argentinian reporter Patrick Gillespie captured the image and tweeted it Thursday:
