One year after Los Angeles’ beloved Landmark closed, the city’s exhibition scene is looking a little brighter – or at least, it will be when a few long-awaited venues open or reopen in 2023, including the Vista, the Egyptian and the new Vidiots outpost at the Eagle Theatre.
Between grappling with the stratospherically priced L.A. commercial real estate and persuading adults to return to movie theaters, the local exhibition scene has weathered numerous challenges since Covid forced businesses to shutter operations.
“It’s better than last year for sure, because Covid is officially over May 11,” says Sony Pictures Classics co-president Tom Bernard, referencing the end of the federal public health emergency declaration. “So that is a great piece of information for people — they will probably go out more when they feel the official end to the pandemic.”

Keeping a movie theater running during the pandemic has been a monumental task, but planning for a new one to open after the pandemic is no picnic either.
That’s the challenge facing Vidiots, the beloved Santa Monica, Calif. video store that closed in 2017 and last year announced plans to restore a vintage movie theater in the northeast Los Angeles neighborhood of Eagle Rock. The Vidiots Foundation still plans to open a 250-seat theater, café, video store and community hub for all things film-nerdy, with support from high-profile film buffs like Aubrey Plaza, Alex Winter, Rian Johnson, Mark Duplass and Phil Lord.
But as movie theater owners start to optimistically look ahead to Covid-19 vaccines rolling out, Vidiots must first cross the hurdle of city bureaucracy before it can continue with a planned six-month construction period.
On Wednesday, the L.A. city planning commission will hold a call-in hearing to...

Vidiots, the beloved Santa Monica video-store-turned-film-nonprofit, will reopen next fall as a store and movie theater in Los Angeles’ Eagle Rock neighborhood.
The nonprofit announced on Monday that it would restore the 90-year-old, 200-seat Eagle Theatre to its original purpose as an independent theater with state-of-the-art sound and projection, and offer a full program of repertory titles, indies, hard-to-find titles, classics and community-driven programs. An adjacent storefront will house Vidiots’ 50,000-plus DVD, BluRay and VHS collection for rental.
The Santa Monica brick-and-mortar on Pico Boulevard was shuttered in early 2017, and the titles had been in storage since then. The store was well regarded for the expertise of its staff.
“Vidiots relaunching on the cusp of our 35th birthday is a triumph for Los Angeles film history and cements the legacy of Vidiots founders Patty Polinger and Cathy Tauber as innovators in L.A. film culture,” Vidiots executive director Maggie Mackay said.
