Before heading off to mainland China to direct those patriotic but commercially successful films like “Operation Mekong” (2016), “Operation Red Sea” (2018), “The Battle of Changjin” (2021), Dante Lam's last Hong Kong film starring Nick Cheung was “The Demon Within” (2014). Now, back to his roots and home turf almost a decade later and this time co-directing with Calvin Tong, he delivers us the extremely violent Category III, adults only “Bursting Point”, again with Cheung in the lead.

Those with memories of Hong Kong Cinema from the late 1990’s will remember the Category III explosion with the likes of “Naked Killer” gaining a following and cementing Wong Jing as one of the premier filmmakers of the era. Today with the local industry becoming more and more sanitised, Fire Lee offers us a throwback to this period with his latest release “Husband Killers”.
A contract killer (Stephy Tang) and a cat burglar (Chrissie Chau) find out they share the same man and decide to kill each other. After discovering the man has another woman (Gaile Lok), the two of them team up to hunt him down along with his mistress. Shootouts and car chases are interrupted only by brief bouts of middling melodrama in “The White Storm 2: Drug Lords,” an in-name-only sequel to the 2013 hit about cops involved in the war on drugs. Vigorously directed by prolific veteran Herman Yau (“Shock Wave”) and well served by an all-star cast headed by Andy Lau and Louis Koo, this Hong Kong action-thriller isn’t deep but is certainly not dull. Mainland audiences have gone wild for “Drug Lords,” with 1.8 million admissions and a $105 million gross in 7 days since its July 5 release, which suggests the potential for relatively strong returns in the U.S., U.K. and other territories as well. Hong Kong release is set for July 16.

In 2013, the veteran director Benny Chan gave us the spectacular action film “The White Storm” which honored the best heroic bloodshed films Hong Kong madein the 80s and 90s. This year the sequel: “The White Storm 2: Drug Lords ” arrives, at the hands of Herman Yau, another veteran director who does not need any introduction.
The White Storm 2: Drug Lords is released in UK cinemas 12th July from Cine Asia
As is usual in some franchises of this type, the continuity is different, which is why it has nothing to do with the previous one. Louis Koo repeats his part in this installment, and he is accompanied by Andy Lau, Michael Mui, Chrissie Chau, Kent Cheng and Kar Yan Lam among others.
The story begins in 2009 in Hong Kong, where the criminal gang of Ching Hing controls much of the city. This criminal gang, led by Yu Nam (Kent cheng...

Supernatural movies, featuring ghosts, “Geung si” and other entities are an important part of Hong Kong Cinema and its cultural heritage. “Encounters of the Spooky Kind” (1980), “Mr Vampire” (1985), “Rouge” (1987), “A Chinese Ghost Story” (1990) are only some of my favorite unmissable ones from the 80’s and 90’s.
Genre-bending movies, often blending horror, comedy, romance and kung fu, they are now an endangered species. After Hong Kong’s handover in 1997, many local filmmakers started making co-productions with the Mainland, where the supernatural films are considered a forbidden subject; therefore, they simply don’t get made anymore, except for some rare and brave case. In fact, those kinds of films have turned into a sort of statement by filmmakers that are committed to making Cantonese language films for distribution in Hong Kong and outside, but not the Mainland.

Top-class fighting and fabulous production design overcome the stale plot of “Master Z: Ip Man Legacy,” a 1960s-set spin-off from the hit trilogy about the legendary Wing Chun master who trained Bruce Lee. With Max Zhang stepping capably into the spotlight as a former Ip Man challenger who wants to live peacefully but can’t avoid trouble, “Master Z” is professionally executed by veteran action director-choreographer Yuen Woo-ping (“Kill Bill”) and given a star-power lift by the casting of Michelle Yeoh and “Guardians of the Galaxy” team member Dave Bautista in villain roles. This expansion of the Ip Man Universe performed credibly in China and Hong Kong in early 2019 and has the required combination of grunt and gloss to repeat the feat when it opens April 12 on U.S. screens.
Since 2008, no fewer than seven Ip Man-related features have been released, including Wong Kar-wai’s “The Grandmaster” (2013). Following hot on...

"I thought I could put martial arts behind me. But deep down... I know I never could do that." Well Go USA has released an official trailer for a badass martial arts movie titled Master Z: Ip Man Legacy, another new story set in the (seemingly never-ending) Ip Man universe. This time, while keeping a low profile after his defeat from Ip Man, Cheung Tin Chi gets into trouble after getting into a fight with a powerful foreigner. Max Zhang (aka Jin Zhang) stars as Cheung, with an awesome supporting cast including Dave Bautista, Michelle Yeoh, Tony Jaa, Chrissie Chau, Kevin Cheng, and Yan Liu. Best of all, this is directed by the martial arts master Yuen Woo-Ping, who has been directing films for years bringing us some of the finest martial arts action ever seen on screen. Of course this looks totally badass, and much better than that other...

You may remember us bringing you news of The Extreme Fox way back in November of last year. It won't suit everybody, that's for sure, but this looks like a joyous throwback to yesteryear. It’s all looking rather good fun, in a very old school kind of way, and seems to owe more than a nod of “inspiration” to - in both look and storyline - Ching Siu-tung’s 80s classic ‘A Chinese Ghost Story.’ Based on a story in the famous Liaozhai Zhiyi (a.k.a. We first covered this in August of last year, but now you can get your wandering hands on a copy of what must be one of the leading contenders for 'Film of the Year'. Or at least, that's how things play out in my perverted mind. Directed by Wan Chi Chueuk, Kick Ass Girls is a Kung-Fu/martial arts action comedy, starring a trio of Asian (Chrissie Chau, Hidy Yu and Dada Lo) babes.... actresses. We mean talented actresses. Obviously. Can’t think why that would be popular?! KAGs is available to buy on Hong Kong DVD - with English subtitles for those that can do two things at once - from January 21, 2014. I'm guessing that the finished product won't live up to our high expectations, and judging by the trailer this is lightweight escapism at best, but Kick Ass Girls could be a fun film all the same. A disaster perhaps,...

Derek Kwok and Stephen Chow’s “Journey to the West” (also called “Odyssey”) is destined to wreck Hong Kong theaters next month on Chinese New Year, and it’s anybody’s guess when it’ll finally cross the ocean to our part of the world. I’m guessing late 2013, or if we’re really lucky, mid-Summer, but that’s a bit overly optimistic with these imports. Until the film does manage to find its way Stateside, though, check out a new English-subtitled trailer for the film, which is, yes, just as wacky as you thought it would be given that this is a Stephen Chow movie. Well, partially a Stephen Chow movie, anyway, though I expect he had the more dominant input into the film than his comrade Derek Kwok. Starring Huang Bo, Shu Qi, Wen Zhang, Show Luo, and Chrissie Chau. You’ll notice the absence of Chow’s name in the starring credits.

One thing is very clear about the upcoming box office duel between Stephen Chow's Journey To The West and Soi Cheang's The Monkey King. There's going to be a lot of dodgy CGI.Both based on the same popular legends, Cheang's Donnie Yen starring project was first to get some actual footage to the fans (an earlier teaser for the Chow film featured no actual footage) and the fan response was less than impressed. Now Chow's Shu Qi, Bo Huang, Zhang Wen, Show Luo and Chrissie Chow starring effort - written, produced and co-directed by Chow with Derek Kwok - has followed suit and I fear the result will be the same. We get our first look at some key characters here and while the physical...

News updates on the upcoming fantasy comedy A Chinese Odyssey, produced by Stephen Chow and directed by Derek Kwok (Gallants), have been kept tightly under wraps since the project was first announced back in July of last year. If you're just as hungry as I am for any bone that they can throw at us, though, here is a little something to whet your appetite. It's the first promo poster featuring concept art of the Monkey King. Beside Chow playing the main role of the Monkey King, the cast will also include Shu Qi, Bo Huang, Zhang Wen, Show Luo and Chrissie Chow. The film is currently in post-production and its expected to be released in 2013 during the New Year....

Also known by the decidedly more fitting name “Nightclub Suspense Tale”, “Any Other Side” is another Chinese omnibus of ghostly tales of the weird and supernatural, marking the debut of writer director Fang Yaxi (aka Captain Fang). Featuring three tangentially linked stories, the genre outing boasts a top eye candy cast of popular young actors and actresses, including the gorgeous Hong Kong actress model Chrissie Chau (“Hong Kong Ghost Stories”), Taiwanese star and singer Van Fan (“Cape No. 7”), Singaporean actor Qi Yuwu (“Painted Skin”), up and coming Mainland starlet Deng Jiajia (“Double Trouble”) and singer Yida Huang. The film revolves around a framing device of a group of 5 friends meeting in a nightclub and sharing spooky stories over a few drinks. “Lost” comes first, following Chrissie Chau as a young wheelchair bound woman being menaced in her house by a raincoat wearing killer, who she believes has killed her twin...

It’s a fact of life that many Asian films undergo name changes en route to international distribution, often ending up with rather generic sounding monikers that have little to do with their actual content. However, by any standard, very few distributors have been quite as bold or sneaky as Arrow Films with their UK DVD release of the Hong Kong production “Vampire Warriors”, which they’ve cunningly re-titled “Lesbian Vampire Warriors”, presumably in a bid to attract a certain kind of male viewer. This is furthered by the DVD cover, which features three of the film’s female supporting cast in vaguely racy gear and brandishing bloody weapons, explicitly suggesting a potent mix of sex and violence. The plot follows upcoming Mainland martial arts actress Jiang Luxia (“True Legend”) as vampire hunter Ar, who co-exists peacefully with a nearby family of ‘vegetarian’ vampires who avoid feeding on humans, including Si (Chrissie Chau,...

Lesbian Vampire Warriors
Stars: Luxia Jiang, Wah Yuen, Chrissie Chow, Siu-hou Chin, Pinky Cheung, Rock Ji, Rachel Lam | Written and Directed by Dennis Law
Described as a “Twilight-inspired Chinese vampire thriller” Lesbian Vampire Warriors is as far from Twilight as you can get. It’s obvious advertising spiel of course to try get vampire fans to show some interest, but in a world where most vampire fans hate even the mention of Twilight it’s to be hoped this does not turn people off, because this film deserves more.
Ar is a vampire hunter, and very much human. She befriends a vampire Max who she agrees she’ll let live as long as she does not kill any humans. Along with Max comes her family, these vampires could be described as quite melodramatic as they spend most of the time wanting to feel something, but of course as they are...

With a title like this how could we not?? Dennis Law’s Kung-fu action comedy Lesbian Vampire Warriors (starring Jiang Lu-Xia, Chrissie Chau Sau-Na, Yuen Wah, Chin Siu-Ho, Rock Ji, DaDa Lo Chung-Chi, A. Lin) is to released by Arrow Films in the UK. As a plus, we’ve thoughtfully provided a link to the movies trailer below - because type that title into Youtube, and who knows what you’d end up finding!? Lesbian Vampire Warriors goes on sale June 25. Synopsis: In this twilight world the humans live alongside the blood-sucking predators as long as they stick to their diet of small animals. Ar (Jiang Luxia) – a non-vampire and her vampire-girlfriend Max (Chrissie Chau Sau-Na) cohabit happily despite their ‘cultural differences’. But, for Max and her vampire siblings, life is otherwise very dull. They experience no pain, cold, discomfort, touch, or warmth and without the thrill of the...

Want to know how shallow I really am? Take a look at the poster for director Stephen Shiu’s upcoming action flick “3D Bauhinia Heroine”, a film which stars Chrissie Chow. I don’t know a damn thing about the movie’s plot, but I’m already hooked because the poster features a lithe young woman decked out in all black. Right now, that’s really all I need to know. The artwork is pretty stylish, and as long as the movie delivers plenty of epic martial arts mayhem, chances are I’ll be all over this one as soon as it arrives next year. That’s right — next year. Oh, well. It’s a damn good thing there’s plenty of stuff to tide me over until then. “3D Bauhinia Heroine” will open across China sometime in...

Although the hitman genre isn’t quite as prolific in Asian cinema as it used to be, it’s still pretty popular, if by now looking more than a little overly familiar. Thankfully, as its oddball title suggests, Taiwanese effort “The Killer Who Never Kills” attempts to add something a little different to the usual formula of moody, self-reflective assassins trying to escape the game, mixing in a variety of elements to spice things up. Based on a popular novel by Giddens (who also wrote and directed the hit “You Are the Apple of My Eye”), the film was directed by Jimmy Wan (“Lover’s Discourse”) and the bizarrely named music video director @pple (real name Li Feng Bo), and features singer Jam Hsiao in the lead, with support from a mixture of Hong Kong and Taiwanese talent, including actress Zai Zai Lin (“Taipei Exchanges”), Chrissie Chau (“Marriage with a...

“Hong Kong Ghost Stories” is a film which delivers exactly as its title suggests, serving up two short tales of spooky fun, directed by immortal Hong Kong schlockmeister Wong Jing and the prolific Patrick Kong. Mixing ghosts and gags, the film boasts a number of attractive young faces in its cast including popular starlet Chrissie Chau (“The Killer who Never Kills”), Jennifer Tse (“Bruce Lee My Brother”), Stephy Tang (“Let’s Go”), Carol Yeung (“Summer Love Love”) and many others. The fun starts with an old school Hong Kong horror type framing device set in a funeral home, in which paper figures come to life and set about making their own film (working in a lame Wong Jing reference in the process). This leads into “Classroom”, directed by Wong Jing himself, with Jennifer Tse as high school substitute teacher Ling, who is given a particularly troublesome class to look after,...

So yeah. The Chinese are pretty much as insane as the Japanese when it comes to making horror movies, and if you need any more proof of this fact, then check out the trailer for Nightclub School Hospital. Yes, that's right... Nightclub School Hospital. Don't worry; we're just as confused.
Other than who the stars are, in this case, Chrissie Chau, Van Fan Yi-chen, Deng Jia Jia and Jill Hsu Jie-er, no plot details are available at this time.
Check out the trailer below, which features a lot of the typical weirdness that you've come to expect from flicks of this ilk and a lot of Michael Jackson type dancing. And the spinny thing from Inception. And monstrous sound effects. And weird sky-based anomalies. Oh, and it's a slasher movie. With dancing.

It was all looking a little worrying for the Category III skin flick in Hong Kong. After actor Edison Chen foolishly put his lap top in for a service back in 2006, and hundreds of sexy photos and videos of some of Hong Kong's most desirable female stars were discovered and leaked onto the Internet, the media backlash was ferocious. There seemed little hope in getting any respectable actress to bare their assets in public again, but slowly the "leng-mo" phenomenon arrived and it became fashionable and even desirable for aspiring young actresses and models to have an ample rack and big Bambi eyes over anything resembling actual talent. Celebrities such as Chrissie Chau and Carol Yeung were born, who were all too willing to...

The one and only Wong Jing returns with “Men Suddenly in Love”, a wacky comedy in his own inimitable lowbrow style. Featuring him as writer, director, producer and even star, the film surely confirms him as an uncouth auteur, with even his most vehement detractors surely now having to admit that his brand of vulgarity may be exactly what the increasingly sanitised Hong Kong comedy genre needs at this point in time. The film boasts a fine cast, with the portly one being joined by Eric Tsang, Chapman To, Jim Chim, and singer Det Dik as his lewd pals, with a bevy of eye catching and scantily clad females including Chrissie Chau, Carol Yeung, Jessica Xu, Caroline Zhu, and Betrys Kong adding a considerable shot of glamour. The plot is a real throwback to the carefree days of Hong Kong screwball sleaze, with a group of five old school friends...

From the creative masterminds behind last year's Shadowguard (the directorial debut trainwreck from Michael Biehn), producer Bey Logan wisely readjusts his sights this time out, opting for the more low-key yet infinitely more market-friendly formula of Chrissie Chau and a group of similarly curvaceous young lasses jumping around in their bikinis. The film co-stars the ubiquitous Lam Suet as well as Shadowguard star Phoenix Valen and the aforementioned Lo Meng, no doubt playing a martial arts guru of sorts who'll teach these beach babes how to better themselves through repeatedly diving head first into the sand. Give director Dennis Law this much: while his last few films haven't actually been particularly good, the man knows how to cut an entertaining trailer. And he's at it again with his latest, the kung fu horror comedy Vampire Warriors.
Starring Jiang Lu Xia, Yuen Wah, Chrissie Chau, Chin Siu Ho, Pinky Cheung, and Xiong Xin Xin - many of them Law regulars - this one is looking to tap into that classic mid eighties vibe, when these sorts of intentional b films were a major part of Hong Kong's film output. And, true to the spirit of that age, the trailer for this has a bit of everything: kung fu, blood letting, goofy comedy and, heck, even a bit of lesbianism. Check it out below!

The wonderfully titled “Womb Ghosts” is the latest effort from real-estate developer-turned director and one man Hong Kong film factory Dennis Law. With a grotesque premise that harks back to the good old days of Shaw Brothers sleazy sorcery and black magic films such as “Seeding of a Ghost”, its trailer certainly grabbed the attention and caused somewhat of an internet stir. Following on from the likes of “Bad Blood”, “A Very Short Life” and others, the film again sees the increasingly prolific Law serving up visceral entertainment in the old school Hong Kong style, pushing buttons and trying to revive the fine tradition of exploitation film making. The plot basically revolves around two women – a bar hostess called Winnie (Koni Lui, also in Law’s “A Very Short Life”), who keeps on mysteriously suffering pregnancies and miscarriages, and Zoe (gorgeous model turned actress Chrissie Chau, also in “Short of...

Oh, Bey. That's just not fair. With The Blood Bond - the debut feature from Bey Logan's start up production house B&E Productions - now in post production, the label has announced the rest of their upcoming production slate.
And what do you think is going to attract all the attention? Will it be animated feature Little Gobie? Michael Wong's Rogue Option? Or, perhaps, could it be Choy Li Fut, a period action film to be co-produced by and star the iconic Gordon Liu?
Nope. Not when the next film to go into production is beach volleyball themed action comedy Beach Spike, starring Chrissie Chau - pictured above - and The Blood Bond's Phoenix Chou. Let's be honest. This could be horrible and still make a big bag of money.
