Austin, TX – Mondo is excited to announce the new book release of Warped & Faded: Weird Wednesday and the Birth of the American Genre Film Archive, available for saleon November 16, 2021 from author Lars Nilsen, editor Kier-La Janisse, along with several genre enthusiast contributors. Nilsen, a longtime Alamo Drafthouse film programmer and now at Austin Film Society, and Janisse, genre scholar and author (House of Psychotic Women), programmer and documentary filmmaker (Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror), have written a definitive guide to exploitation cinema.
At the dawn of this century, a scrappy one-screen theater in Austin, Texas became ground zero for a revolution in film exhibition. That cinema, the Alamo Drafthouse, took the seemingly foolhardy step of offering free screenings of exploitation and horror movies that had quite literally been consigned to the scrap heap. The idea began in the sleep-deprived mind of its co-founder, Tim League,...

I hit adolescence right around the turn o’ the ‘80s, and it was a very strange time for kids’ movies, or at least movies that creatives thought kids would like – and after the success of the Clint Eastwood megahit Every Which Way but Loose (1978), that usually meant a film with some sort of simian featured in it. After that (plus a sequel), we were treated to Going Ape (’81), a Tony Danza starrer that featured orangutans just like Clint’s, and of course TV had Bj and the Bear (’78-’81). There are others, but let’s be clear: most films that stop cold to feature an animal aren’t worth the droppings they leave behind. This brings us to Carnival Magic (1983), one of B-movie legend Al Adamson’s final features and his first of two stabs at a family film. Leave it to Severin Kids’ line to spring it on an unsuspecting Blu-ray audience.

Chances are if you're reading this, it's because you love film. Whether it's Texas-centric films, or the occassional Hollywood blockbuster that you enjoy reading a review about, it doesn't matter. Either way, you're here and you're here because you love movies. The Rep understands that love, and the documentary focuses on three people who were willing to risk their livelihood to share that love with the people in their hometown in Canada. Alex Woodside, Charlie Lawton, and Nigel Agnew are the proprietors of the Toronto Underground Cinema, a single-screen repertory theater that caters to the film nerd community who crave seeing films the way they were meant to be seen.
Backed by a single investor, in a theater hidden underneath a giant condo building, the underground cinema sits away from the hustle and bustle of the busy streets, visible to no one. That didn't stop the three cinephiles from trying...

While many of us know Joe Bob Briggs for his famous Drive In reviews, with their Dead Body and Breast tallies, it should also be noted that the man is a pretty well versed scholar of film. A few years back we were astounded by his breadth of cinema knowledge when he stopped by to co-host The Texas Show at the old Alamo Downtown Theater. The man really knows his stuff – he’s full of provocative insights and has a writer’s facility with words.
A couple of months ago we approached him about joining us for one of our Cinema Club screenings. At Cinema Club we have a special guest introduce a classic film and then we, Alamo programmers Lars Nilsen and Daniel Metz, discuss the film in the round with the expert guest and the audience. Joe Bob loved the idea, and he immediately proposed Preston Sturges’ taboo-breaking Miracle At Morgan’S Creek,...

Yes, it’s going to be that kind of party.
Night Nurse, with special guest, film writer Kim Morgan (Sunset Gun) will play as the next Cinema Club screening at Ritz this Sunday. Cinema Club shows incorporate an audience discussion with the programmers and guest expert. Expect it to be provocative, entertaining and a lot of fun. Go ahead and get those tickets here.
You know that sensation you get from old movies sometimes, that they’re winking at you across an expanse of years, sneaking in a private dirty joke here and there? Well, Night Nurse isn’t just winking, it’s not sneaking; it’s kicking down the door and getting wild. It’s one of the glories of pre-code cinema. The only real analogue we can think of is the ‘nurseploitation’ films of the ’70s. Those movies were bold for their time, Night Nurse, made 40 years earlier,...

Surely you’ve heard the hubbub. Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau graced us with their presence at a sneak screening of Iron Man 2 on Tuesday (aka, raddest Tuesday ever!). You can read all about that Here, but fair warning, you might get a little jealous. Be comforted by the fact that I didn’t see Rdj either. What a handsome fellow…
No Time For Moping! We’ve got too much fun stuff to do. First of all, tickets for the Second Screening Of Weird Al Live In Person go on sale in less than 24 hours! Fact. Don’t miss the sale or there will be no Wheel of Fish for you! Also, Fantastic Fest 2008 favorite The Good, The Bad, And The Weird opens Friday at S. Lamar. This movie is pure fun, not to mention its gorgeous visuals (and a couple of the actors.

A Reel One Viewing Party – Free! Admission is on a first come/first seated basis
Wednesday April 7, 9:50, Ritz
At a secret location in Austin, there’s a huge film archive known as Agfa, the American Genre Film Archive – this non-profit archive counts among its board members and advisors Alamo Drafthouse founders Tim and Karrie League and programmers Lars Nilsen and Zack Carlson. Many of the film prints contained in the archive are not fully documented, so periodic inspections are conducted at which time we string up several “reel ones”, that is to say the first 15-20 minutes of different movies, for the purpose of taking note of the credit information, condition of the film and general plot information. For folks interested in print collecting, obscure films and movie history, it’s fascinating. Past “reel one” screenings have uncovered some real gems and some real boring doo-doo,...

What a week! First of all, if you got caught in the fiasco of the ticketing site for Weird Al last Friday, we’d like to apologize. We greatly underestimated how excited people were about this event, and it sold out in mere minutes, completely destroying the ticket server. We are, however, in talks with Weird Al’s posse about the possibilities of a second show, so sit tight and we’ll give you details as they come!
Lately, it has been crazy gorgeous outside. I guess this is the “nice” weather that comes around once a year. We’re taking advantage of it, this week specifically. We have two outdoor screenings! Tomorrow (Thursday), we’ve partnered with Amoa again to screen Nashville at the beautiful Laguna Gloria! Saturday, Tim and Karrie League are opening their home for a MS150 BeneFeast screening of Triplets Of Belleville!

Oh, SXSW… it’s a rocky relationship, you and I. We have a lot of fun together, you give me free booze and barbeque, keep me out way past my bedtime, get me home safely (most of the time), and then you take me out the next day. Then, near the end of the week, we start fighting. “I’m tired!” I say. “I don’t want your free tacos!” I say (and then eat three anyway). “My stomach has been f-ed up for Days, I don’t want your Southern Comfort!” and then two days later you’re gone. SXSW does this to all of us. It keeps the Alamo Ritz so busy that we have to nix all specialty programming for a week so we can show new movies, so keep that in mind this week.

Ah March… the sun is shining, the trees are greening and people from all over the world are about to invade our fair city for SXSW and give us their money. You gotta love the few weeks of spring we get in Texas. Pretty soon it’s going to be hot as balls. Sure, it’ll drop down to 35 probably at some point, but worry not, it’ll be 80 the next day.If you haven’t been into the theater since last week, we put our new Spring Menu Specials up! They are crazy tasty, and come highly recommended from everyone at Alamo HQ. Some of those specials are for the big opener this weekend, Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland In 3D! I’ve loved Tim Burton for years, and I love Alamo feasts, so you can find me at the Alice Five-course Feast next Wednesday.

I’ve got to stop bitching about the weather. Last week I praised February, and then yesterday it snowed. Snowed. Whatevs. I’m over it.We were surprised earlier this week when we found out we’d be getting Roman Polanski’s newest thriller early than expected! The Ghost Writer opens Friday at S. Lamar and has Ewan McGregor’s dreamy face all over it, with Pierce Brosnan trying to kill that dreamy face. I think. I haven’t seen it yet! Cop Out also opens this weekend, and if you love 30 Rock as much as I do, you’ll probably go see it just for Tracy Morgan! Also, the red band trailer makes me giggle A Lot. Speaking of giggling inappropriately, it’s time for the return of Spike And Mike’S Sick And Twisted Festival Of Animation! Longest title ever! Grossest cartoons ever!

The Alamo Guide
for January 8th, 2010
Apologies for the late email this week. I was celebrating 2010 out of town, and then when I got home I was distracted by the intensity of the Texas vs. Alabama game. Bummerrrr. Oh well. We can all drown our sorrows in some Alamo fun this weekend! First of all, The Monster Squad screening was so popular that we added a second one later that night so there’s still a chance to see the Cast And Creators In Attendance! Youth In Revolt, The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus, and Crazy Heart all open up this weekend. Girlie Night presents Romy & Michele’S High School Reunion on Tuesday, so get your business women outfits ready (but please have your fake job description ready)! If you’re a foodie and love our Alamo feasts, The Alamo Iron Chef competition returns with a battle between Alamo kitchen and...

I know, I know. There are already more than enough Top 10 Movies of 2009 lists on the Internet, why should you care about another one? Well, for starters, it's a list; they take 10 seconds to scan for highlights. But even beyond that, you should mouse over this link and click because the lists I'm talking about are a little more interesting than the ones on KylesMovieReviews.blogspot.com. They come by way of the brilliant (and remarkably friendly) brains that turn the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas into a mecca for film buffs: the programmers.
Tim League, Lars Nilsen, Henri Mazza, Zack Carlson, Brad Parrett, and Daniel Metz have all offered up their selections for the finest of cinema last year had to give us and, sticking with Drafthouse tradition, their choices are a bit more eclectic than usual. For example, only one of the gents gave placement to Oscar front runner Up in the Air,...

The picture to the left has nothing to do with anything released in the last ten years, but it is from a movie.
Here in the Alamo programming office, movies are a big deal. We each watch approximately 215 movies per day, seven days a week, no holidays.
It’s a tough job…especially when it comes time to narrow down our favorites at the end of each year. It’s even more difficult to figure out what the best 20 films were in the past decade. But we do it all for you.
The lists below represent the most powerful and/or entertaining films of 2009, plus the finest we’ve seen since Y2K destroyed civilization. Take a look, disagree, get furious and attack us on the street.
Warning: We’ve got switchblades.

I saw Mother at Cannes this year and it blew me out of the water.

The Alamo Guide
for December 10th, 2009 If you’re at the S. Lamar theater this weekend, and you see a bunch of groggy ass, smelly, crazy-looking people wandering out of the theater around noon on Sunday, don’t worry. They won’t hurt you, they will have just sat through a full 24 hours plus of movies and they’ll be in desperate need of sleep. I’ll be one of them. It’ll be awesomely exhausting! Aside from that, if you got tickets already (if not, toooo bad), you can see the folks from Broken Lizard with their newest film The Slammin’ Salmon, but the most important thing that you should do is Go See Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans!!! Yes, the name is long, and the trailer makes it look kind of silly, but the hype over at Alamo Headquarters is ridiculous and the few people in...

The Alamo Guide
for November 19th, 2009
It’s totally fall, you guys! I know this, because my allergies have exploded with this cold front, it was 40 something degrees last night, And I Get To Eat Turkey Next Thursday! Oh so much turkey will I eat! With extra dressing and gravy. I will be doing this with my biological family, which, if you consider the other options we have at the Alamo, actually sounds pretty boring. While I’ll be way too full falling asleep staring at the football game that I don’t really care about on my grandparents couch, You can be way too full, falling asleep, staring at the Ut vs A&M football game that you probably Do care about at the Alamo Ritz! Or you can be watching any movie at any of our theaters, because our annual tradition still stands. We’ll be your second...

Put briefly, the 42Nd Street Forever DVDs have become the best and most consistently entertaining series out there. I’ve never been disappointed by the trailers on view, and with Synapse Films teamed on the latest edition with Austin, TX’s now widely known Alamo Drafthouse and its owner Tim League and programmers Lars Nilsen and Zack Carlson, I knew I was in good hands.
If you’re unacquainted with the Drafthouse, it’s a kind of haven for cinephiles, specializing in running vintage prints and previews for films that make our collective geek heads explode. This makes its proprietors and the 42Nd Street Forever franchise a perfect combo, like Jack and Coke. There are 40 coming attractions included in this edition, with a few highly amusing PSAs thrown in for good measure. For instance, the opening bit features a tennis-playing Charlton Heston explaining film ratings, as if midgame he remembered...

Director Jess Franco was on-hand at Fantastic Fest during a screening of his 1969 film Venus in Furs, and he was surprised by the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Sword. Lars Nilsen, film guru extraordinaire of the Drafthouse presented the award as part of the celebration of Franco's films going on during Fantastic Fest. The festival officially opened last Wednesday with a midnight screening of Franco's Eugenie: The Story of Her Journey into Perversion (1980), and since then they've shown Succubus (1968), and The Bare Breasted Countess (1973).
Franco has directed nearly 200 films since 1957, up to and including A Bad Day At The Cemetery from 2008. He's worked tirelessly in Spanish cinema as everything from composer, writer, cinematographer, and editor for years, and his films are truly different. To dismiss them as arthouse schlock is a crime, and if you have a chance you should seek out one of the three films featured on...

In a little more than two weeks Fantastic Fest will be upon us. I've personally been looking forward to this since the moment SXSW 2009 came to a close, and the anticipation has only intensified. The lineup of genre films this year brings some very exciting dilemmas to the table since some of the films I want to see are playing on the same night and only screening once. Instead of sitting at home moping along to my favorite Morrissey songs, decisions must be made and priorities set. Here is the link to the films that will be featured in Fantastic Fest 2009. Fflogo For those of you that are unfamiliar of the badassery of Fantastic Fest, below is the official about statement: Fantastic Fest was founded in 2005 by Tim League (founder of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema) and Harry Knowles (founder of Ain’t It Cool News). Fantastic Fest is the largest genre film festival in the U.
