Sufjan Stevens enlisted the help of St. Vincent, Moses Sumney and the Punch Brothers' Chris Thile for a haunting, intimate performance of his Oscar-nominated song "Mystery of Love" at the 90th Academy Awards Sunday. Stevens wrote the song for Luca Guadagnino's Call Me By Your Name.

Joel and Ethan Coen drop most of the sarcasm for their deeply felt character study. Everything's a big problem for Llewyn: a girl (Carey Mulligan), various agents, fellow performers, and a cat. I find Oscar Isaac's Llewyn to be wholly sympathetic, and that cat business is deeper than it looks. The terrific extras include a complete concert docu. “Before Dylan... There Was Davis”
By Raymond Benson
The first Coen Brothers feature to be given the “Criterion treatment” is, oddly, their most recent release—Inside Llewyn Davis, which received (mostly) critical praise upon its release in late 2013. Kudos were especially heaped upon the film’s relatively new star, Oscar Isaac. Sadly, while the picture recouped its investment and made a little money, it wasn’t as widely embraced by audiences as it should have been. This is probably because the Coen Brothers typically don’t make movies for the masses. The auteur siblings create art that appeals mostly to intelligent, hip audiences willing to enter a strange, sometimes disturbing, always surprising, universe that is distinctly Coen-land.
Inside Llewyn Davis is presented as a comedy, but in the Coen Brothers’ oeuvre, “comedy” can mean many things. It can be wild and wacky (Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski) or it can...

Anyone who’s ever had their musical ambitions crushed by the ever oppressive forces of real life will find a great sense of empathy within Joel and Ethan Coen‘s great reimagination of the Greenwich Village folk scene, Inside Llewyn Davis. Essentially a dour depiction of the limitations of artistic ambition and musical performance as a viable career, as well as a remarkable portrait of the Village on the cusp being redefined by the arrival of Bob Dylan and the commercialism of the genre, the film stands as a unique companion piece to Don’t Look Back and I’m Not There that pays tribute to what came before with the rye eye of the Coens.

Sons of Anarchy, Season 7, Episode 8, “The Separation of Crows”
Directed by Charles Murray
Written by Kurt Sutter
Airs Tuesdays at 10pm on FX
Putting aside all of the violence (which packs no punch), torture (which has gone too far yet again), and killing (which has no motivation behind it) for just a minute, this week’s episode of Sons of Anarchy tries to do some interesting things with its characters for maybe the first time all season. It doesn’t always pan out, but that is a result of not committing fully rather than refusing to take the time to try something different. After weeks of dropping breadcrumbs in regards to Abel’s mental state and the club’s effect on him, there is finally a definitive incident that proves Abel’s surroundings are turning him into an indiscriminately violent and angry person, just like his father. Of course, Sons...

'There's nothing more foolish than a man chasing his hat," says a character in the Coen brothers' 1990 movie Miller's Crossing. If Inside Llewyn Davis, the latest from the filmmaking siblings, is any indication, Joel and Ethan Coen have apparently changed their opinions on the subject: There's actually nothing more foolish than a man chasing his cat.

Adalind might be having some troubles in love and romance on "Grimm," but the woman behind the villain is having no such issues. Claire Coffee reveals on her Instagram that she and her boyfriend of two-and-a-half years, Chris Thile, tied the knot on Dec. 23.
"Merry Christmas, y'all. #BlackberryFarm #hitched," she posts along with the above photo.
Coffee walked down the aisle in a 1937 vintage lace wedding dress that she picked up from a boutique in Portland, Ore. (where "Grimm" is filmed). Thile wore a custom-made Against Nature suit.
As Coffee tells Us Weekly, only 20 guests attended the ceremony, which was held in the Smoky Mountains at "gorgeous and rustic" resort Blackberry Farms. Coffee's sister Abbie Coffee was officiant. As Thile is lead singer of Punch Brothers, he and Coffee had Bon Iver guitarist Rob Moose play Bach on the violin as the bride walked down the aisle.

The early buzz has been tremendous for Inside Llewyn Davis, the Coen Brothers' upcoming film about the Sixties folk scene in Greenwich Village, New York. One scene in particular is generating extra attention: the film's title songwriter (played by Oscar Isaac) lands a gig recording a goofy space-race protest tune alongside a pair of awkward folk artists (played by Justin Timberlake and Girls star Adam Driver). Watch it here.

The star of the upcoming Coen brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis may be the dark, handsome, and somewhat mysterious Oscar Isaac, but the soul of the film is its music — a folk-inspired soundtrack featuring some of the biggest names in music, including Justin Timberlake. Isaac is featured on several of the tracks, which he performs himself in the film as the titular down-on-his-luck songsmith Llewyn Davis. To celebrate the film, the producers staged a concert in New York with folk geniuses the Punch Brothers (literally — band leader Chris Thile won a MacArthur Genius Award in 2012) and filmed the event for an upcoming Showtime special.

Weeks out from theatrical release on Dec. 6, the Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis" has launched with the subtle noise of its soundtrack. NPR is streaming the 14-song set in its entirety; making up half the songs are traditional folk tunes, and all featuring a diverse contributors, from the movie's principals Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan and Justin Timberlake, to the vocals of Marcus Mumford (of Mumford & Sons), producer T Bone Burnett and the Punch Brothers. The connection to the Coens' "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" is obvious. Music drives both stories, and the songs stem from traditional origins. Acoustic instrumentation...

As per Joel Coen, “Llewyn Davis (played by Oscar Isaac), is a made up character, with Real music from the time period.” Step into the smoky “Gaslight Cafe” in 1961 where Llewyn is up on stage with a spotlight on him singing, “Hang Me, Oh Hang Me.”
“The Gaslight Cafe” was an American coffee house located in the basement of 116 MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village. The Gaslight (alternatively known as “The Village Gaslight”) opened in 1958 and was a well known venue for folk music and other musical acts, until it closed in 1971.
When Llewyn finishes his set, he is told that there is a man wearing a dark suit in the back alley who wishes to meet him. As he approaches him, he gets beat up. Poor Llewyn, he’s down on his luck, and, in my opinion, born a little too early. Perhaps if he had been playing his songs in the late ’60′s, he would probably have been better received, but because it is 1961, most of the other acts, like “Jim and Jean,” still have a Very clean cut look, personality and sound.
Broke, couch-surfing, locked out of the apartment with his friend’s cat, trying to get singing gigs, a manager who doesn’t help him, an ex-girlfriend who wants nothing to do with him, Llewyn is looking for a break.
Funniest scene: Adam Driver’s singing role as Al Cody in “Please Mr. Kennedy.”

Small Interviews
Q: Why do you make movies about failures?
A: Joel Coen: “Because all the success stories have all been done.”
A: T-Bone Burnett: “Even if the scene or moment is supposed to be bad, the music has to be great.”
Q: How did you want it to look?
A: We actually shot more in the East Village than the West Village. Some streets in the East Village aren’t as built up as the modern day MacDougal Street. We wanted something to feel more like it would have in 1961. We did shoot a little in the West Village; Village Cigars, Thompson Street, Jones Street, and MacDougal.
A: Our first thought for the film was to shoot in black and white on 16mm, but that idea fell by the wayside when we started designing shots.
Actress in the film Bonnie Rose, Bette Midler’s stand in for The First Wives Club, and Isn’t She Great, and Dodi Gamble in Inside Llewyn Davis, answered the following questions for me.
Q: If you had to describe the Coen Brothers and then Llewyn Davis in one word, what would they be?
A: It is very hard to say one word about the Coen Brothers…..
I would have to use two words about these two men who are iconic.
The Coen brothers are “Authentic Geniuses.”
The character of Llewyn Davis, is “resolute.”
The New York Film Festival (Sept. 27-Oct.13) is going on now. Los Angeles' own Rose Kuo (formerly director of the AFI FIlm Festival) has notched it up this year as our local newspaper L.A. Times has pointed out to us in perhaps a somewhat condescending way. Nyff was never a "quaint afterthought", but it was not what the Lincoln Center Film Society offered the trade with new offerings of films you can see in its spring festival New Directors/ New Directions. But this year, it is on the trade's map of top fall film festivals for the first time since 1984 when Blood Simple of the Coen Brothers made the trade realize its great value.

Speakerfone is a recurring column that focuses on music in movies.
Play us a song from "Inside Llewyn Davis" -- then add in another 40 or so classic folk songs, and invite a group of legendary musicians to come and perform them. The result: a star-studded, multi-generational event that pays tribute to a new film and its source material.
Last night in New York City, A-listers, journalists, and a small group of fans who were lucky enough to snag tickets online, came out to celebrate the newest Coen brothers movie at the legendary Town Hall in Midtown Manhattan. Over the course of three hours, a rotating cast of artists performed a wide range of standard folk tunes, along with tracks from the "Inside Llewyn Davis" soundtrack. Overseeing the three-plus-hour production was the man responsible for the film's music: songwriter, producer, and frequent Coen brothers collaborator T. Bone Burnett.

Telluride, Colo. - CBS Films helped the 40th annual Telluride Film Festival get off to a musical start by bringing in the Punch Brothers to perform at an opening night concert Wednesday night. Chris Thile and his band appear on the soundtrack to the Coen brothers' upcoming "Inside Llewyn Davis," and they played some bluegrass favorites to a nice crowd in the town park. The film stars Oscar Isaac as a folk singer in 1960s New York. Isaac joined the band for a rendition of "Fare Thee Well (aka Dink's Song)." The film made its debut earlier this year at the...

The movies will arrive soon enough, but on Wednesday, the Telluride Film Festival kicked off its 40th edition with music. Bluegrass group the Punch Brothers played an hourlong set at the Town Park to a crowd of locals and newly arrived festival guests. Among those bopping their heads in the crowd were filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen, while the Punch Brothers played set that included tunes from several of the siblings' films, including "The Big Lebowski" and "O Brother Where Art Thou?" Towards the end of the set, the group unveiled two songs from "Inside Llewyn Davis," the Coens' Cannes-acclaimed new film, which screens at Telluride this weekend in conjunction with a tribute to the brothers and their regular musical collaborator T. Bone Burnett. While Burnett was scheduled to appear onstage at the Punch Brothers concert, a canceled flight prevented him from making it in time. However, the band was...

Finally the talented Oscar Isaac is a leading man in the new Coen Brothers movie, Inside Llewyn Davis, playing a struggling folk singer. The Drive and Sucker Punch actor is even getting some early award season buzz from his performance. Take a peek at the new trailer and poster from the movie also starring Justin Timberlake, John Goodman and Carey Mulligan.
Loosely based on American folk singer Dave Van Ronk, the Guatemalan-born Isaac portrays a young singer during the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961. The Coen Brothers films take place during one week's time and boasts the music of Justin Timberlake, Mumford and Sons' Marcus Mumford and Punch Brothers with award-winning music producer T Bone Burnett collaborating for the fourth time with the brother team. There’s a new trailer Inside Llewyn Davis, which you can see below.
I’ve been a fan of the Coen brothers ever since I watched a double feature of Blood Simple and Raising Arizona with my friends at college. It’s the perfect intro to the Coen’s special brand of films because each film showcases the brother’s ability to master whatever genre the choose. If you want to see a Coen film that has the suspense/crime elements of Blood Simple and the comedy of Raising Arizona, I recommend Fargo, which just happens to be my favorite film of theirs.
Inside Llewyn Davis follows a week in the life of a young folk singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961.

"Inside Llewyn Davis" looks better and better with each passing trailer. The latest look at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival Grand Jury Prize winner focuses on its title character (Oscar Isaac) as he struggles to find work in the music scene in 1960s-era New York City.
Isaac gives a powerful performance as Llewyn Davis, but it's the supporting cast that also is intriguing. Isaac and Carey Mulligan reunite for the first time since "Drive," albeit in very different roles. Justin Timberlake plays against type as Mulligan's character's husband, who is a folk singer like Llewyn. Rounding out the ensemble are Garrett Hedlund and John Goodman.
Despite the impressive array of actors in "Inside Llewyn Davis," the movie looks like it gets its soul from its music. Directors Joel and Ethan Coen reunite with music producer T Bone Burnett for the fourth time on this project, and "Inside Llewyn Davis" also counts...

Navigating and maintaining a career in music is a perilous journey, one where paying your dues doesn't always lead to a big break. But for 26-year-old Chris Thile, he's already reached some pretty big career highs, nabbing a couple of Grammys for both his solo work and his efforts with the platinum-selling Nickel Creek. But in a move that surprised fans in 2006, Nickel Creek went on indefinite hiatus forcing Thile to reasses and in many ways, start over from scratch.
What happens from there is chronicled in the upcoming documentary, "How To Grow A Band," from director Mark Meatto. The film follows Thile as he begins anew with bold plans to write a 45-minute elegy to a failed relationship to be played by a bluegrass quintent, and eventually, the birth and formation of his next group, Punch Brothers. Whether you're a fan or not, this exclusive trailer for "How To Grow A Band...

Way to go, "Twilight" movies. You've made it so that it's no longer okay for films aimed at young adults to churn out soundtracks stocked with cookie-cutter pop bands.
Fortunately, it seems that T. Bone Burnett, the guy behind the soundtrack to the upcoming "The Hunger Games" film, has learned that lesson well. His collection here is eclectic, interesting and full of artists that some of the movie's younger fans will likely not know. It's also excellent and pretty damn dark, which is in keeping with a flick about kids who kill each other for sport.
Country poplet Taylor Swift, who has two songs on the list, has stated that Burnett's goal was to put together a collection that would reflect "what Americana and bluegrass music would turn into in the future." Apparently, the future isn't that creative, because a lot of what's here sounds pretty much like what Americana and bluegrass music is now.

Ever notice how work tends to bunch up like a bunch of six year olds playing soccer? Like, you'll go days or even a couple weeks when you can just cruise along without too much trouble and then Bam! You've got seven major things to do before the end of the week and it's Wednesday night. That happens to me more than I like to admit, and it's half because of my own procrastinating tendencies, but it really does seem like the more I have to do, the more work people give me. So it's unlikely I'll be watching TV tonight but in case you are, here's what's on:
8:00pm: "ABC Sports Special: Jimmy Kimmel Live: Game Night" on ABC
8:30pm: "100 Questions" on NBC. The name of this episode is "Have You Ever Dated a Bad Boy?" What the hell kind of question is that? How are we defining "Bad Boy" anyway?...
