Know who's really killing indie filmmakers? Other wannabe indie filmmakers. Since making a movie has become so easy and Diy, the market has been flooded with trash by people who have no business even owning a camera. This makes finding the promising indie films an absolute chore.
Still, we wade through the film mire, and when something captures our eyes, we bring it to your attention. Take Adam Ahlbrandt's Hunters for example. Test screenings of the film have resulted in a 50 percent walkout ratio, and apparently one man had a panic attack following his viewing.
It is set to be released by ToeTag Films in the Us and Illusions Unlimited in Germany later this year.
The flick stars Linnea Quigley, J.D. Brown, Kacie Marie, Tina Krause, Haley Madison, Jason Vail, Mel Heflin, Shaun Paul Costello, Tiffany Carroll, Victor Bonacore, Jadie Goodpasture, and Genoveva Rossi. Ahlbrandt directs from a script he wrote.

At a time when a remake of a classic horror film has recently come out on Blu-ray, seemingly looking to humanise an iconic monster of the screen, yet leaving many a horror fan feeling empty; horror fans understand that we don’t need to understand a killer to know why he does what he does, just give him a simple motivation and let him raise hell. This is why I was quite happy to find myself reviewing Nobody Gets Out Alive which ended up being an independent horror based on good old fashioned homage to slasher conventions deeply rooted in the seventies and eighties.

We have some new stills from Adam Ahlbrandt The Cemetery to share that include two of our favorite summertime staples: bikinis and entrails! We also have details on the film's screening at the Days of the Dead horror convention along with Ahlbrandt's other new flick, Cross Bearer.
From the Press Release:
Horror movies Cross Bearer (2012) and The Cemetery (2013) will be screening Saturday, July 6th, and Sunday, July 7th, at Days of the Dead Indianapolis (Wyndham Hotel, 2544 Executive Drive, Indianapolis, In 46241). Both will be highlighted at the convention’s “Jabb 48-Hour Film Fest,” followed by Q&A panels with the trio behind the features - Adam Ahlbrandt (director/writer/cinematographer), Natalie Jean (lead actress), and Doug Sakmann (Spfx) - all of whom also acted as co-producers.
Cross Bearer, after developing a rabid fan base on the convention and festival circuit the past six months, will be headlining the Saturday night lineup of films.

The Adam Ahlbrandt directed double feature Cross Bearer and The Cemetery has been making the rounds at Cannes, and we have more details on both, including artwork, trailers, and a few stills.
The films were picked up for German speaking territories by Illusions Unlimited, an Austrian Uncut Distribution Company. CEO Emsch Schneider said, "These movies are very cool and gory. Cross Bearer is a back-to-the-roots slasher, and The Cemetery is a gory and violent flick with amazing practical effects. We're honored to release these brutal movies Uncut in German speaking territories." We should hear more about a North American release and other territories shortly.
In The Cemetery (official site here) a team of paranormal investigators must fight for their lives after accidentally releasing a demon from a forgotten cemetery. Alternately gut-punching hilarious and brutally violent, The Cemetery takes the best elements of the old-school slasher film and pushes them to the edge.

Adult Film Star Reems has died at the age of 65 Harry Reems, the male lead in the epoch-making early '70s X-rated entry Deep Throat, died yesterday, March 19, at a Salt Lake City veterans hospital. The actor had been suffering from various serious ailments, among them pancreatic cancer. He was 65 years old. (Pictured above: Harry Reems in the '70s.) Born Herbert Streicher in New York City in 1947, he began working in the entertainment industry after serving in the U.S. Marines. His is a classical show business tale, sort of similar to the Ruby Keeler / Bebe Daniels switch found in the classic musical 42nd Street: when Deep Throat's original male lead didn't show up on the set, filmmaker Gerard Damiano had lighting director Reems to step in as an unknown (and later come back a star). The film's plot revolved around a doctor (played by Reems) who discovers that...

Oh the horror. Low budget movies. This one is titled Nobody Gets Out Alive (2013) written and directed by Jason Christopher. Will anyone get out alive? Yes. So much for titles. Jenn (Jen Dance) is just out of the hospital after having a nervous breakdown or something and her friend Michele (Chelsey Garner) organizes a trip out to the woods. Michele hopes to be proposed to by Mike (Shaun Paul Costello). They’re joined by a poor man’s Jay Mohr named Deron (David J. Bonner), a Zack Galifinakas impersonator Jared (Chris Ready), a Tara Reid hopeful called Angie (Nikki Bell), and a pointlessly aggressive jerk called Danny (Matthew Nadu). For some reason, the murderer, Mr. Isth (Brian Gallagher)—worst evil name ever—kills the people who run a convenience store. Anyway, the gang go out to the...

Nobody Gets Out Alive is writer/director Jason Christopher’s love letter to slasher films of the 70′s and 80′s, and the movie was released this week to DVD by Image Entertainment. I recently had the chance to catch up with Jason, and we talked about putting together his first feature, his love of directing over writing, and what’s next:
Why did you decide on Nobody Gets Out Alive as your first feature film and what movies inspired the story?
Jason Christopher: 90′s horror movies just didn’t do it for me because there was a completely different vibe from the 70′s and 80′s horror movies. Then Scream came out and horror movies started to pick up again. I think the last best slasher of the 80′s was Intruder in 1989.
I always wanted to write a script that was my thanks to the 70′s and 80′s slasher genre.

Hello once again my fellow brothers in sleaze. It is Mondo Squallido time once again. This week we are sticking with a title from the Avon Dynasty 1980′s box set from Alpha Blue Archives. However, we are going with a different director today. That director of course is Shaun Costello (you guys might remember him from the Water Power review) and his 1981 title, Prisoner Of Pleasure in which a woman finds herself kidnapped and held hostage at the hand of a gang of sick men and women. However, all is not as it seems and there’s more than meets the eye. A classic tale of love, lust, lies and of course desire… plus we have a helping of some penetration and a fun new way to play with a basketball!

Today on Mondo Squallido we are looking at a nasty little roughie from 1977 called Waterpower (aka Enema Bandit, The Enema Killer) directed by the fantastic Shaun Costello (Forced Entry, Dominatrix Without Mercy,Teenage Nurses). The film stars a whole list of stars but the main character is played by the amazing Jamie Gillis (Pleasure Palace, Keep On Truckin’, The Defiance Of Good… amongst many).
Jamie Gillis plays as a psychopath who after a very bizarre encounter in a brothel, discovers the joys of enemas. Basically, the film centres round Gillis “cleansing” debauched and tainted women throughout the film by administering enemas against his will, it’s more than just sexual gratification, his twisted mind thinks this is helping. Pretty much every scene involving the enema is notable with the stars on the receiving end staying in character, sometimes frighteningly well but the performance of the film goes straight to Gillis...

People really love slasher flicks. They never seem to go out of style and probably never will. The reason for this is simple: Slasher movies are stripped-down formula filmmaking, and when they're done right, they're extremely effective. But when they're not done right, well, you know.
Down the Road, writer/director Jason Christopher's recent entry in the slasher subgenre, is just such an exercise in stripped-down formula filmmaking. And though Christopher's film gets a lot right, it never quite overcomes what it gets wrong.
Christopher puts all the pieces in place and begins solidly by developing a believable new mythology, something not enough of these movies bother to do. Years ago, a young girl was killed by a drunk driver.

Indie horror filmmaker Jason Christopher dropped us a line last night to share with us the first of two teaser trailers for his upcoming slasher movie Down the Road and give us an update on the project.
Christopher told us, "This is the first of two official trailers coming out for the flick. I cut this one. It's a more serious overview of the flick that we're going to see. Straight to the point. The second trailer that is being cut by director/editor Matthew Lauyer will be more fun in the beginning, more fast-paced, and something really ‘in your face.’ This one explores just how messed up the world is that we created and gives you a good look at Clint Howard's character in the film.”
“The movie is in its last week of post-production and then it’ll be ready to be sent out. I am so...

Title: Close-Up Writer-director: Jose Cruz, Jr. Starring: Shaun Paul Costello, Valentina Mohle, Brian Gallagher, Jacqueline Schneider, Brian Anthony Wilson, with Alan Ruck and Ryan Dunn One of the common pitfalls of independent film comes by way of the navel-gazing that, perhaps somewhat understandably, a hard-grinding life of either on-the-fringe or upwardly mobile artistic endeavor engenders and encourages. Movies about would-be filmmakers or struggling actors and other artists are of course neither automatically good nor bad, but do often lose themselves in a thicket of puffed-up self-importance, mistaking their impediments and human efforts as somehow automatically more interesting than that of the so-called common man, and thus requiring of less dramatic lift....

For up-and-coming genre writer/director Jason Christopher, horror has been a way of life for him for as long as he can remember. “I grew up watching horror movies ever since I was a little kid because I would get obsessed with the cover art on the VHS boxes."
Christopher continues, "The art on old-school horror boxes used to be so badass so that’s what got me hooked. I loved the eye candy and my love for horror grew from there. I had always wanted to do a horror movie and had always kept outlines for different ideas but nothing came of it. It wasn’t until my dad passed away that I really wanted to pen one to get out my anger and whatever and that’s how Down the Road started off.”
Down the Road, the project Christopher mentioned, is the writer/director’s own love letter...

Kphat Productions presents a slasher film starring Jen Dance, David J. Bonner, Shaun Paul Costello, Chelsey Garner and horror legend Clint Howard (Evilspeak, House of the Dead) and directed by Jason Christopher of
Down the Road
In Down the Road, a group of college students escape their troubled lives only to find themselves fighting for their lives from a revenge seeking mad man. According to director Jason Christopher, "I'm going with that old school throwback style to 80's, 70's horror without the grimy look to it though". Furthermore.... "to make it fresh feeling is the different angles that I used and the certain moods that happen when people get butchered".
Currently, Down the Road is in post production. The teaser trailer, seen below, was just recently released by the director. If the teaser is any indication, Down the Road is a brutal, effective film that evokes the slashers of the 70's & 80's.

Here we have what claims to be another indie throwback slasher called Down The Road. So why am I bringing it to your attention? Three reasons actually. 1) I'm a sucker for slasher flicks. 2) Down The Road was shot in Philadelphia, Pa (my hometown) and 3) The film features Clint Howard and I absolutely love Clint Howard, especially when he does genre work. Check out a teaser trailer and Clint Howard interview clip below. Just yesterday I was talking about why it's wise to stay out of the fucking woods if you don't belong there, but I guess we should be thankful for those unfortunate dolts who think they're heading there for a good time only to become meat for the beast. Hey, it makes for good movie watching!
The latest film to hit our radar is Jason Christopher's terror tale Down the Road starring Shaun Paul Costello, Chris Ready, Chelsey Garner, David J. Bonner, Nikki Bell, Jen Dance, Matthew Nadu, and the great Clint Howard.
"The film pays homage to films such as Friday the 13th and Halloween." says producer Deven Lobascio. To further add to this new slasher's pedigree, Lobascio goes on to tell us that the script for the film was revised and edited by writer Victor Brooke Miller, who penned the original Friday the 13th. Very nice!
