The new comedy "Take Me Home Tonight" celebrates the 1980s and all its excesses, from Mercedes-worship to Frankie Goes To Hollywood telling us all to relax.
The '80s was a time of rampant materialism and mohawks, and the only way people got through it -- like WWII -- was with laughter.

The same team that made "Airplane!" decided to bring their anarchic brand of humor to the small screen with "Police Squad" (In Color), but the satire of TV cop shows only lasted a measly six episodes. After a long career in public service in which he saved Queen Elizabeth II from being assassinated by ballplayer Reggie Jackson, and prevented the Academy Awards from being blown up, Lt. Frank Drebin is no longer with us, and neither is Leslie Nielsen.
Nielsen, whose 60+year showbusiness career saw him go from being a leading man with a handsome mug to mugging for the camera as a virtual comedy institution, has passed on at the age of 84.
His nephew Doug Nielsen confirmed to Canadian radio station Cjob 68 that, after a two-week hospital stay, the actor died due to complications from pneumonia in the presence of his wife Barbaree and other family.
The Canadian-American first came to prominence in the 1956 sci-fi gem “Forbidden Planet,” where he played second fiddle to Robbie the Robot, a giant animated “id monster,” and other impressive special effects. Nielsen then spent the next few decades in...

Mlb Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson seriously cut the crap in New York yesterday -- telling TMZ, when you gotta go, you gotta go ... even if that means dropping a deuce in your uniform ... mid-game! Mr. October stopped by the grand opening of a NYC SoupMan (Reg is an investor) -- the place that inspired Seinfeld 's Soup Nazi episode -- and told us, he once had to change his uniform in the middle of...

It might be darn near impossible to imagine anyone else telling his Number One to "Make it so" on the bridge of the Enterprise-D other than Patrick Stewart but before the show went to air it was a distinct possibility.
Imagine for if the many worlds theory from quantum physics is real and there are an infinite number of parallel universes existing. If that's the case then there is a universe close to ours where Patrick Stewart didn't get cast as Picard and instead ithe job went to Yaphet Kotto, star of Brubaker, Alien, The Running Man and Blue Collar. Or, in a universe just across the road, Picard was played by Roy Thinnes, the guy that chased The Invaders around on 1960s television. Instead of a nearly unknown Jonathan Frakes landing his big break and playing Commander Riker, it may have gone to someone named Gregg Marx and...

Here's an old Paramount Pictures memo that was in the archives of Paramount, or maybe they found it behind a desk while moving offices. The memo was written on April 13th 1987 to the head of Network Television. It gives us a look at the actors who were being considered for certain roles in the series. One of the most interesting names on the list is Wesley Snipes being considered for the role of Georgi! He was actually the frontrunner for the part. Could you imagine!

With the new tv show Undercovers premiering next month, starring the already oft-mentioned Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who I know best at Freema Agyeman’s (#1 on my ‘Wifey List’) sister on Dr. Who, and pretty-boy extraordinaire Boris Kodjoe, I thought I’d focus on what seems to be, in a good way, a proliferation of Black men on tv shows lately. Although these guys are supporting characters, they’re playing some pretty intense roles and putting forth some great comedic and dramatic performances. Though none of these are network shows like Undercovers, they are often better (and sometimes better performing) than those.

It really could have been different; 1 alternate choice here and there, and the faces that have long been cemented in the minds of fans may have looked entirely unlike those we all are familiar with now.
I came across this archived interoffice Paramount Studios note, dated April 1987, detailing the list of actors who were, at the time, being considered for the starring roles in the then unknown (but forthcoming) Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series – my favorite in the long-running Star Trek franchise, which aired from 1987 through 1994.
Gotta love the web, right?
Anyway, I got a kick out of some of the names who were on the shortlist of actors who were going to be brought in to read for Gene Roddenberry the following week, as the memo states. For example, Yaphet Kotto was being considered for Captain Jean-Luc Picard! That would have been interesting, but I’m struggling to picture him,...

HollywoodNews.com: It’s hard to believe, because he was such an omnipotent figure in Yankee life, but George Steinbrenner is dead at age 80.
The obits and comments today will be something to read, and lengthy at that. No baseball owner was ever this controversial, whether he was hiring people to spy on his players or having public fights with popular managers. In his heyday he was loud, nasty, and frustrating.
But in a way what would we have done without him? When Steinbrenner bought the Yankees, they were dead. CBS and Mike Burke had killer them. It was the era of mediocre players with few exceptions: Mel Stottlemeyer, Bobby Murcer, a just arrived Thurman Munson, and dependable Roy White. Ralph Houk was the staid manager.
Steinbrenner changed all that. He ushered in Billy Martin, Dave Winfield, and Reggie Jackson, and a determination to win at all costs.

George Steinbrenner, whose New York Yankees won 11 American League pennants and seven world championships under his frequently controversial ownership, died of a massive heart attack Tuesday morning in Tampa, Florida. He had turned 80 on the 4th of July, but has been in failing health the past few years after suffering a series of strokes. Called "The Boss," the imposing figure was that and more - bullying (especially his managers and general managers), bombastic but, like the team he and 15 limited partners bought for $8.8 million from CBS in 1973, generally victorious. He even entered the pop-cultural landscape, being portrayed on Seinfeld as...

Two new parodies open in theaters this weekend on Friday, May 21… MacGruber and Shrek Forever After. Just as these two films are very different from each other, as are movie parodies, ranging in style and format, poking fun at anything and everything. In keeping with this week’s box office theme, We Are Movie Geeks has formulated our own list of the ten best parody movies. The films we’ve selected broadly encompass the widely varying genre of parodies, and while we certainly left out some good ones, it gives an idea of what we think of as being the exemplary examples.
Honorable Mention: Uhf (1989)
I’ll admit, Weird Al Yankovic’s parody of public access television is not everyone’s cup-o-tea, but for truly devoted Movies Geeks, this is a modern classic of ridiculous comedy. Yankovic has already established himself as an international music star, which is saying a...

(S01E10) "Ok, Crosby. Should I go back to bed and make believe I didn't see you?" - Jabbar, after seeing Crosby in the hallway in the middle of the night
You know, it's kind of sad when the kids have it more together than the parents, but that was sort of the theme in this episode of 'Parenthood.' At that point, you might as well just tell the kid you're sleeping over. I mean, they're your parents, so it wouldn't be totally out of the question that they'd have a relationship. Then Jasmine accuses Crosby of trying to brainwash Jabbar into thinking it was all a dream. Just tell him!
Then we had the whole Zeek/Camille drama, which to be honest, felt a little forced to me. It's not just that Zeek doesn't seem like the kind of guy who'd cheat on his sweet wife,...

For baseball fans, The Official Major League Baseball World Series Film Collection, out on Nov. 10, is the Holy Grail, the mother lode, a grand slam of a DVD collection. Remove the wrapping, tilt the package cover, and out comes a monster of a book that starts with a forward by Bob Costas and is followed by overviews of World Series from 1903 to 2008. The pages grow thicker starting with 1947, as the first of 20 DVDs are fitted into the set. And what's on those DVDs? Fifty-plus hours of footage capturing memorable moments from the annual fall classic. It's all there: Willie Mays' legendary grab called "The Catch," Jackie Robinson swiping home in 1955, Don Larsen's perfect game in 1956, the Miracle Mets of 1969, Reggie Jackson emerging as Mr. October in 1977, the Mets capitalizing on Bill Buckner's infamous error in 1986, Kirk Gibson playing the limping hero in 1988, the Yankees winning it all in 1996, 1998, 1999 and in the 2000 Subway Series,...

New York — The New York Yankees rolled down the Canyon of Heroes in the traditional World Series parade on Friday morning. The city is electric, basking in the glow of the team's 27th World Championship. Along with the 2009 team — featuring Derek Jeter, Johnny Damon, A.J. Burnett, Mark Teixeira, C.C. Sabathia and Hideki Matsui — Bronx Bomber greats from previous Series-winning teams, such as Reggie Jackson and Chris Chambliss, were on hand. Even Jay-z rode a float with Alex Rodriguez. Jay is just one of many New York City-bred musical stars — also including Lady Gaga, Fabolous and Q-Tip — who have been raving about the Yanks.
However, one New Yorker who couldn't be in the city to see the parade is 50 Cent. He's in Miami promoting his forthcoming Before I Self Destruct LP.

Huge Yankee fan Jay-z actually showed his team pride by getting on the float with one of the team's franchise players, Alex "A-Rod" Rodriguez. Recently a couple of old baseball stars named Gibson and Jackson -- National Leaguer pitcher and American League hitter -- have been pushing a book that they've published, bantering about who would have got the best of whom and comparing the game that they knew with the game they see today. "I don 't know if the game has changed," Bob Gibson, now 74, told George Vecsey of The New York Times, "but the people have changed." Actually the game changed radically in the decade after Gibson retired, which was the latter half of Reggie Jackson's career. They are being presented now as virtual contemporaries, but in fact Gibson played in one era, while Jackson, now 63, played in two. A quick glance at their year-by-year records reveals this immediately. Gibson pitched his entire career, from 1959 to 1975,...

I'm not sure who will rejoice at this news more: Yankees or Mets fans. Long-time Yankees owner George Steinbrenner has been sued by a former colleague for breach of agreement regarding the Yes Network. This is another in a long line of broken and burned bodies left in Steinbrenner's wake.
Accusing Steinbrenner of lying is a bit like accusing the the Pope of being Catholic. Just ask Billy Martin, Dave Winfield, Reggie Jackson, etc., etc., etc. I'd be more surprised if he told the truth. Simply on the basis of who George Steinbrenner is and how he behaves, I'm pretty sure that Robert Gutkowski is justified in his claim.
Mind you, Steinbrenner is pushing 80. He's not quite the powerhouse he used to be. If you want to sue him, now's the time (as opposed to even 10 years ago). Perhaps they should get Larry David (who did the Steinbrenner impression back...
