It’s not difficult to scorn John Chau. A 26-year-old evangelical Christian with a taste for outdoor adventure, he undertook a one-man mission in 2018 to North Sentinel Island, an extremely remote and unreached part of India, to bring the gospel of Jesus to the Sentinelese. Even if you don’t know the story, it’s clear from the start of the new National Geographic documentary The Mission that things did not go well. The film is a reminder that, from the non-missionary perspective, and even from a less reckless missionary perspective,...

Emily Blunt is a desperate single mom who ends up in a wild criminal scheme in David Yates’ Pain Hustlers. Netflix today dropped the first trailer for the film billed as tonally similar to The Big Short, American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street.
In Pain Hustlers, Blunt stars as Liza Drake, a blue-collar single mom who has just lost her job and is at the end of her rope. A chance meeting with pharmaceutical sales rep Pete Brenner (Chris Evans) puts her on an upwards trajectory economically but dubious path ethically as she becomes entangled in a dangerous racketeering scheme. Dealing with her increasingly unhinged boss (Andy Garcia), the worsening medical condition of her daughter (Chloe Coleman), and a growing awareness of the devastation the company is causing forces Liza to examine her choices.
The trailer teases Liza and Pete’s high salary, hard-partying lifestyle with title cards...

After The CW renewed Walker for a shortened fourth season, it was inevitable the news would not be good for the prequel series Walker: Independence.
The network officially canceled Walker: Independence Tuesday night, months after the freshman season was capped at 13 episodes.
Admittedly, interest in Walker: Independence paled compared to the original series, but the numbers were still substantial -- by CW standards.
With a week of DVR viewing factored in, Walker: Independence Season 1 averaged just under one million viewers and a 0.1 rating in the demo.
It ranked as the network's #4 most-watched series among total viewers, which was a decent metric.
Set in the late 1800s, the series followed Abby Walker, an affluent and tough-minded Bostonian whose husband was murdered before her eyes while on their journey out West.

Katherine McNamara is no stranger to worlds far removed from our reality, having starred in sci-fi fantasy series “Arrow” from The CW and Freeform’s “Shadowhunters.” Her role in “Walker: Independence,” the 1870s-set prequel series to The CW’s “Walker” starring Jared Padalecki, is akin to her previous portrayals — in heart and strength — even if she’s trading leather jackets for corset dresses.
“Abby is very much a woman who has agency in a time when a lot of women didn’t,” McNamara told TheWrap in an interview, “and a woman who’s thrust into a situation she wasn’t prepared for and into a world that she knows nothing about and has to find her way and make a family and build something out of a tragedy.”

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the series premiere of Walker Independence.] Abigail Walker has arrived in Walker Independence. The series premiere of the Walker Western prequel debuted Thursday, October 6 on The CW, starring Katherine McNamara (Arrow), Matt Barr, Justin Johnson Cortez, Katie Findlay, Lawrence Kao, Philemon Chambers, and more. The cast had previously told TV Insider that their show was “not your mama’s Western,” and the pilot certainly proved as much. While retaining the aesthetic of a classic Western, The CW’s newest drama features a diverse cast tasked with telling the stories of the diverse people of the American West in the late 1800s. McNamara tells TV Insider that everyone Abby meets in this fledgling town has something they’re running from. And with new details about the murder of her husband unearthed in the series premiere, it seems Abby does too. Here, McNamara ...

In January 2021, the Jared Padalecki-starring and executive-produced “Walker, Texas Ranger” reboot (simply titled “Walker”) premiered as a new hit for The CW. Perhaps not quite infiltrating pop culture the same way as “Riverdale” had, still, it found success as a family and crime drama. The show was soon renewed for a second season, and is about to start its third. In the process of that success, naturally, the series was able to go the spinoff route — making this CW fall season two-for-two for spinoffs on Padalecki-associated vehicles, as the “Supernatural” prequel “The Winchesters” is also premiering soon, and he’s an executive producer on “Walker: Independence.” But the most interesting aspect of both of these spinoffs is that they specifically see value not in telling concurrent or future stories of the characters, but instead going back to the past, in prequel form.

Abigail Walker (Katherine McNamara) is a woman on a mission to seek vengeance against the man who murdered her husband in the new teaser for The CW’s “Walker: Independence,” which you can view above in a clip shared exclusively with TheWrap.
The prequel to “Walker” takes viewers back some hundred years to the late 19th century, on the frontiers of the Wild West in the eponymous Texas town. Following the brutal killing of her husband, the would-be sheriff of Independence, the determined Abigail must band together with an eclectic group of residents — like the charming criminal Hoyt Rawlins (Matt Barr) and trusted Apache adviser Calian (Justin Johnson Cortez) — and figure out who she can trust in exacting justice against Sheriff Tom Davidson (Greg Hovanessian), a hypocritical lawman with shady business dealings.

The CW’s Walker prequel, Walker Independence, is set to premiere on October 6, 2022 at 9pm Et/Pt. The new series takes place in the 1800s but shares a character – and actor – with the original show. Matt Barr stars in Walker Independence as Hoyt Rawlins, an ancestor of the Hoyt Rawlins he plays in Walker.
Speaking to TVLine, Barr described his Walker Independence character as made of the same DNA and heart as Walker‘s Hoyt. “But [Walker‘s] Hoyt was more of a talker, and this guy is a man of action. He’s a little more dangerous,” said Barr.
Katherine McNamara stars as Abby Walker, Justin Johnson Cortez plays Calian, and Katie Findlay is Kate Carver. Lawrence Kao is Kai, Philemon Chambers stars as Augustus, and Greg Hovanessian is Sheriff Tom Davidson.

We love watching Chris Evans in romantic comedies. In villainous roles. In action thrillers. And soon, in crime dramas. The actor has dabbled in distinct projects, more so since stepping away from his superhero responsibilities. This article contains Fistful of Vengeance spoilers.
“Like the Avengers…but Asian.”
When Tommy (Lawrence Kao) quips this line in a Fistful of Vengeance, it’s almost meta. Fistful of Vengeance is the feature film sequel to Netflix’s 2019 10-episode martial arts driven series Wu Assassins. It is produced in the same spirit as Fox’s Firefly and Serenity or Netflix’s own Sense8 by the Wachowskis (which also had a lot of martial arts.)
Beyond Tommy, two other Wu Assassins leads reappear in Fistful of Vengeance. Indonesian martial arts superstar Iko Uwais reprises his role as Kai Jin, the San Francisco Chinatown chef and last incarnation of the Wu Assassin, an eternal superhero warrior out to save the world. Also there’s Lu (Lewis Tan), a mere mortal like Tommy but with ridiculous Kung Fu skills. Wu Assassins was a martial arts driven show, reminiscent of AMC’s Into the Badlands,...
