Updated with Vice statement: More than 75 current and former writers for HBO have signed a petition calling on Vice Media “to sign a strong union contract” with the WGA. The list includes several high-profile scribes including John Oliver, David Simon, Warren Leight, Tom Fontana, Eric Overmyer and Jesse Armstrong.
Read the petition and its signatories below.
Editorial staffers at Vice overwhelmingly ratified their first contract with WGA East in April 2016, a three-year deal that was retroactive to January 1 that year.
“This petition shows what WGA East solidarity looks like,” the guild said in a statement. “Just as our members who craft shows for HBO are expressing support for their brothers and sisters at Vice, the Wgae-represented employees in all parts of Vice are supporting each other in the quest for a good contract. The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...

Boardwalk Empire Season 5, Episode 7: “Friendless Child”
Written by Riccardo Diloreto, Cristine Chambers and Howard Korder
Directed by Allen Coulter
Airs Sundays at 9pm Est on HBO
Three seasons ago Enoch “Nucky” Thompson met his former protege, Jimmy Darmody, in a dusty field and told him that he wasn’t seeking redemption. And then he shot him in the head. Twice.
Things have changed.
In the ten years since that fateful night, the second of two life-changing moments for Nucky, Atlantic City’s former treasurer has found himself worn down like a statue on the shore. Each and every role of the tide has taken a little bit of him away, and now there’s nothing left but a sad old man who yearns to be a simple and decent person again.
In this sense, the irony of the past and present segments of “Friendless Child” rhyme like the alternating schemes of poetry.

Boardwalk Empire, Season 5, Episode 4: “Cuanto”
Written by Howard Korder & Cristine Chambers & Terence Winter
Directed by Jake Paltrow
Airs Sundays at 9pm Est on HBO
With “Cuanto” we mark the halfway point of the final season, and its first major death. As fans of Boardwalk will attest, though, the only real surprise was that it took as long as it did. If you were running the numbers in Vegas, or Atlantic City for that matter, the odds would come up quick that there will likely be a lot more to come. If only Arnold Rothstein was still around to roll the dice on that one.
Speaking of Rothstein, his former business partner arrived as the game-changer in last weeks episode, leaving this week to make good. Luckily she does at that. In fact, Margaret emerges as the star of the show in “Cuanto”, and it’s not hard to see why.

Boardwalk Empire, Season 5, Episode 3: “What Jesus Said”
Written by Cristine Chambers and Howard Korder
Directed by Ed Bianchi
Airs Sundays at 9pm Est on HBO
As we approach the halfway point for Boardwalk Empire‘s final season, we are given an underwhelming, if somewhat eventful, episode.
“What Jesus Said” opens with Chalky and his loose cannon partner breaking into the house of the latter’s former employer. In what is easily the low point of the episode, Chalky’s plot consists of balancing precariously between his edgy accomplice, Milton, and the mother and daughter whom they have taken hostage. Although on paper, the idea might sound engaging, it plays out in a mostly uninspired manner due to the fact that Chalky isn’t given a whole lot to do. These scenes, which take up roughly 1/3 of the main plots explored this week, consist widely of three other characters who...

Boardwalk Empire, Season 4, Episode 8, “The Old Ship of Zion”
Written by Cristine Chambers and Howard Korder
Directed by Tim Van Patten
Airs Sundays at 9pm Est on HBO
Kate is new to Boardwalk Empire this season and her reviews will approach the acclaimed series from the newbie’s perspective.
This week, on Boardwalk Empire: Nucky gets a visitor, Knox finds a lead, and Chalky has excellent musical taste
The brewing conflict between Chalky and Dr. Narcisse comes to a head in “The Old Ship of Zion”, forcing Daughter to make her choice in the episode’s most powerful, climactic moment. Chalky and Michael K. Williams have both been under-served this season, given very little of interest to do or play while Dr. Narcisse lurks in the background, scheming. Fortunately that changes this week. Williams gives a fantastic performance, demonstrating his range and showing us both Chalky’s brute strength and utter vulnerability.
