At a time when networks are loudly hunting for the next “second-screen series” (meaning a show you watch while you scroll on your phone), “Diarra from Detroit” is a bracing blast from the not-so-distant past when TV wasn’t just background noise.
“For me, TV can be a really sacred time,” series creator/showrunner/star Diarra Kilpatrick told IndieWire. “TV watching time can be like a really sweet and sacred time. And so I did want to make something where each episode felt like a full meal. That was intentional from the very beginning. You know when you have half of a piece of key lime pie left in the refrigerator and all day, you’re like, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to go home and eat the other half of that key lime pie with some peppermint tea’? It gets you through the day, you know? And I really like that about television,...

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Aftersun (Charlotte Wells)
One of last year’s most resonant films, Aftersun looks at the scratchy dynamics between a father and daughter while on vacation. It’s about memory, the finite nature of the relationships in our lives, and the difficulties of a parent’s diminishing mental health. Charlotte Wells knows where to put the camera in her debut—undeterred from taking risks, from placing her characters outside of the frame, from looking at shadows instead of the people themselves. Aftersun is a rare, tremendous first film, full of heart and focused melancholy; it breaks you down and fills you up simultaneously. The consistent inclusion of camcorder footage, and the fact that it enhances the story rather than becoming a distraction, further...

Generation (Genera+ion), the HBO Max original, has gotten picked up by Tubi and all 16 episodes of the series are now available. Watch a trailer of the first and only season in the video posted above.
Created by Zelda Barnza and Daniel Barnz, Generation centers on a diverse group of high school students whose fearless exploration of identity and sexuality challenges the antiquated social norms embedded in their conservative community. As they navigate the intricacies of growing up with the help (and hindrance) of their ever-present devices and social media, they lean on one another to cultivate unique voices and stamp their individuality on the world around them.
Generation was short-lived on the Warner Bros. Discovery streamer and although it was full of rich characters with plenty to explore for a second season, it was canceled after its first season. The show was recently removed from HBO Max as Wbd...

Freeform has canceled comedian Phoebe Robinson’s comedy series “Everything’s Trash,” Variety has confirmed. The show premiered on July 13 and ran for 10 episodes leading to the Sept. 7 series finale.
Based on Robinson’s 2018 book entitled “Everything’s Trash, But It’s Okay,” the comedy followed 30-something famously outspoken podcaster Phoebe (Robinson), who is said to “make her mark on the culture while living a broke and pleasantly messy life in Brooklyn. After her seemingly perfect older brother declares for public office, she’s then forced to embark on her adulting journey.” Nneka Okafor (“NCIS: New Orleans”), Toccara Cash (“Station 19”), Jordan Carlos (“The Nighly Show with Larry Wilmore”), and Moses Storm (“Arrested Development”) also starred.
In addition to creating and writing the series, Robinson also served as an executive producer alongside Jonathan Groff. Jose Acevedo and Lauren Bans co-executive produced. Laura Gutin executive produced with Chioke Nassor, who also directed an episode.

Exclusive: Freeform will not be ordering a second season of Everything’s Trash, its comedy series starring, written by and executive produced by 2 Dope Queens’ Phoebe Robinson.
Everything’s Trash, which premiered July 13 and wrapped its first season run Sept. 7, was Freeform’s least watched and lowest rated original series in linear ratings this year. The majority of viewing for Freeform series comes from Hulu but the network does not reveal streaming viewing data, so it is unclear whether the comedy got traction on digital.
Based on Robinson’s book, Everything’s Trash follows Phoebe (Robinson), a 30-something podcast star navigating her messy life. Forced to grow up when her older brother Jayden emerges as a leading political candidate, she relies on her friends and close-knit family to help her figure out adulthood.
The series also stars Jordan Carlos, Toccarra Cash, Nneka Okafor and Moses Storm.

The original short directed by Chioke Nassor asked a group of Black friends to choose who among them was the “blackest” as a sacrifice to save the rest. Why? Because the killer got confused when starting his spree, unable to find the “Black character” his trope-fueled brain demanded as its first victim. Hilarity ensues, everyone desperately trying to erase said blackness to keep breathing, revealing embarrassing (some unforgivable) secrets along the way. It’s an ingenious conceit for satire that’s perfectly suited for a full-fledged horror comedy willing to tread heavily in that vein while also holding some surprises up its sleeve. So that’s exactly what screenwriters Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins (the lone holdover from that skit) do with Tim Story’s The Blackening.
Fans will be glad to hear the aforementioned scene is reenacted almost verbatim here, complete with that revelation. Before we get there, however,...

In Chioke Nassor’s short film “Meghan is on a Bender,” girl meets boy, second boy mugs girl, girl goes on bender and things only get worse from there. In the black-and-white, three-minute short, a raspy yet sultry voice narrates the story, which opens with Meghan in the throes of a one-night stand, and closes with her in the throes of a physical assault by the mugger she wouldn’t let go. Parallels between both abound as bad decision making comes full circle. Director Nassor has a simple, logical explanation for the idea’s genesis. Also Read: Shortlist 2015:...

As anyone who's helped turn Comedy Central's new series "Broad City" into a hit for the network can tell you, Ilana Glazer is one of the funniest women on television. And like all great comedians, she can do drama too. Created by Glazer and her co-star on the show Abbi Jacobson, "Broad City" first began as a web series before morphing into the Amy Poehler-produced phenomenon that recently got green-lit for a second season. Prior to embarking on the Comedy Central show, Glazer acted in Chioke Nassor's "How to Follow Strangers," a delicate indie that's now enjoying a second life on VOD thanks to her newfound fame. For her "Broad City" fans, Glazer's subdued performance as Ellie, an introverted young woman who falls for a stranger she commutes with daily, will no doubt surprise. Ellie is so shy she stalks her crush home without making herself known.
