An encouragement to filmmakers we've frequently made here on S&A is to explore new genres and styles of filmmaking, given the wealth of relationship comedies/relationship dramedies/relationship dramas (whether shorts, features, or web series) that fill our email inboxes from time to time. But if you absolutely must make a film/web series that fits underneath that "relationship" genre umbrella, at least consider doing something fresh with it, whether stylistically, structurally, narratively, etc. Do something that makes it stand out from the deluge. Like what writer/director/producer Martine Jean did with her short film The Silent Treatment, which stars Emayatzy Corinealdi. Malik...

Darker Trailer For Sylvain White's French Thriller 'Mark Of The Angels' (Now w/ English Translation)
Here's a new, darker trailer for Sylvain White's upcoming new feature - his last outing since The Losers in 2010 - an adaptation of French author Jean-Christophe Grangé’s thriller Miserere. And, unfortunately, like every trailer and clip we've posted on the film, this one also isn't subtitled in English! However, this time, I enlisted the help of Martine Jean, who's done some French-to-English translation for us in the past, to do the same with this new trailer. So, below, you'll find the trailer, and, underneath it, a transcript of each line of dialogue to match. I was going to take the time to download the trailer from YouTube, insert into my video...

Thanks to Martine Jean, who, once again, translated this interview for me from French to English. A film that's high on my to-see list this year, and which I think will generate some discussion here and elsewhere (assuming it's released here in the USA) is Hatian filmmaker Raoul Peck's latest work, a feature documentary titled Assistance Mortelle (or Fatal Assistance in English), which made its World Premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in February, and which we reviewed positively Here. What promises to be an exposé that will offer the world a look at the international community's response and reaction to the devastating...

My many, many thanks to S&A reader and Facebook friend Martine Jean for taking the time to translate this interview for me, which was entirely on video, and in French. Obviously it was in print, I would've likely used Google to translate. But it was all a video interview - roughly 30 minutes long - so I appreciate that Martine took the time to translate and write up a summary of the whole thing up for me! Anyone who's transcribed interviews knows how much of a pain in the butt the work can be! It's a Vox Africa TV sit down interview with Michel Ouedraogo, who's the Director General of Fespaco - essentially he's the man running the show over there. The...

The producers of the psychological horror movie Dark Woods sent along an exclusive clip from the movie, featuring an uncomfortable bedroom moment between the protagonists played by Zombie Honeymoon’s Tracy Coogan and screenwriter John Muscarnero. They also sent along some fresh photos; you can see them all below.
Dark Woods, which we previously reported on here, stars Coogan and Muscarnero as newlyweds Susan and Henry, whose trip to a remote cabin to deal with Susan’s ill health goes awry when Henry’s bad behavior leads to unpleasant consequences. Michael Escobedo directed, and the cast also includes James Russo, Mary Kate Wiles, Mark Shady, Corey Mendell Parker and Martine Jean. You can see the trailer at the movie’s official website here, and see its Facebook page here.

Herbert Brindl from the heart of Hollywood drops me another line on "Dark Woods." The film, which is psychologically themed, involves infidelity and terminal illness and "Dark Woods," is currently moving towards a future release date. Despite the serious subject matter the first trailer and one sheet poster have a distinct gloomy atmosphere that manages to heighten the films tension. As well, first time director Michael Escobedo steps behind the camera in this horror film that focuses primarily on atmosphere and story. Have a look at the first full length trailer inside.

Fango caught up with Zombie Honeymoon actress Tracy Coogan, who gave us an update on the recently wrapped Dark Woods, which she stars in and associate produced. She also passed on some fresh exclusive photos (see ‘em below) from the movie, lensed in 14 days last October in the mountains above Los Angeles and directed by Michael Escobedo from a script by John Muscarnero (the two also produced).
Dark Woods revolves around newlyweds Susan (Coogan) and Henry Branch (Muscarnero), who move to a secluded cabin in order to attend to the former’s failing health. It seems hubbie Henry isn’t the stand-up guy he ought to be, however, and instead of keeping his focus on his terminal spouse, he engages in a sexual tryst with a local teen (Mary Kate Wiles) he has saved from a rape. Badness, of course, ensues. James (The Ninth Gate) Russo, Mark Shady, Corey Mendell Parker...
