Marco Bellocchio’s elegant mob drama “The Traitor,” about the first high-ranking member of Cosa Nostra to break the Sicilian Mafia’s oath of silence, was the big winner at Italy’s 65th David di Donatello Awards, the country’s equivalent of the Oscars.
“The Traitor” scored six statuettes including best picture, director, and actor honors.
The prizes were announced – but not physically given out – during a no-frills ceremony conducted in primetime on pubcaster Rai by star host Carlo Conti in an empty studio with talents appearing in live web platform link-ups. The event served as a collective rebirth rite just when local coronavirus lockdown restrictions slowly begin to lift.
“My wish is for the Italian film community to start working again,” Bellocchio, who is a revered veteran auteur, said speaking from his home, before adding: “I’m 80, and I also hope to make a few more movies.”

"The Great Beauty," Paolo Sorrentino's splashy valentine to Roman high society, was the most lauded foreign-language film of the last awards season -- it ruled the European Film Awards, and scooped Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Oscars. (At all but the last of these, it beat out its Cannes conqueror, "Blue is the Warmest Color.") So you'd think it'd be a shoo-in at Italy's own Academy Awards, right? Wrong. At yesterday's David di Donatello Awards, handed out annually by the Academy of Italian Cinema, Sorrentino's film was the night's biggest winner in terms of numbers -- taking nine awards, including Best Director and Best Actor for Toni Servillo. But its other wins were limited to below-the-line categories -- trust the Italians to have separate awards for Best Makeup and Best Hairstyling -- as Paolo Virzi's "Human Capital" took Best Picture. Virzi's film, a blend...

The highlight of DC Comics on day two of New York Comic Con was the Green Lantern panel headlined by Gl architect Geoff Johns, Peter Tomasi, Tony Bedard, Ivan Reis, Joe Prado, Adam Schlagman and Rodolfo Migliari. Newsarama had live question for question coverage... Early in the panel Tomasi said that a lot of the "seeds that we've planted start to show themselves pretty soon." Johns spoke about the Green Lantern film, a hot topic at the Nycc and Here at Daily Blam, saying that the film has wrapped and is "really exciting". An audience member asked if any of the other Corps will be getting their own comic. Johns commented that the Red Lantern Corps, led by Atrocitus, will be the villains in the Green Lantern animated series. He also teased that another Corps will be starring in a series...
