Democratic candidate Katie Hobbs, who has vigorously defended abortion rights during her campaign, has defeated Republican Kari Lake, the Associated Press reports. Lake joins the overwhelming list of Maga wipeouts during the midterm elections.
Hobbs has defeated one of the most outspoken defenders of former President Donald Trump. Serving as Arizona’s Secretary of State, Hobbs has repeatedly rejected GOP lies about the election. Lake’s defeat follows the loss of two other high-profile election deniers — Republican Senate nominee Blake Masters and Secretary of State nominee Mark Finchem.

It was a true Grand Canyon State nail biter but Katie Hobbs prevailed over former TV anchor and Donald Trump acolyte Kari Lake in the race to be Arizona’s next governor, NBC, CNN and other networks projected on Monday.
The tight race between the candidates has been too close to call since Tuesday’s midterms, but the latest results from the state showed that Republican Lake would be unable to overcome current Arizona Secretary of State Hobbs’ lead. As over 71,000 votes and other data came in from Maricopa County tonight, the Comcast-owned network first made its call:

Washington — It was a pretty straightforward request.
In January, the watchdog group American Oversight asked the Department of Homeland Security to provide the number of analysts inside the agency’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis devoted to working on “non-Islamist domestic terrorism threats” — including right-wing extremism or attacks motivated by “white supremacist or antigovernment ideology” — for the past ten years. The group also asked for memos, guidance, or other paperwork regarding any changes to the number of analysts working on those issues since President Trump took office.

People breaks down some of the most buzzed-about candidates: Elizabeth WarrenRumors are rife that Clinton might enlist Massachusetts Sen. Of all the big Republican wins in the midterm elections, Joni Ernst's in Iowa may be the biggest, as it helped swing the Senate to Gop control, in one of the fiercest contests. Democrats saw Iowa state Sen. Ernst, 44, as a serious threat, enlisting Michelle Obama, Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton to campaign for Ernst's opponent, Bruce Braley, in the race for the seat that had been occupied for 29 years by the retiring Democrat Tom Harkin. When this new star of the Republican Party is sworn into office in January, she will become Iowa's first woman in the U.S.

President Obama just gave the proverbial cold shoulder to Russia with one of his picks for the U.S. delegation to the Winter Olympics.
In the midst of the all the controversy surrounding Russia's anti-gay propaganda law, the president selected Billie Jean King to be part of the American delegation to Sochi, Russia, in February.
Why is his choice such a statement? King is of course a sports legend -- who also happens to be openly gay.
"I am equally proud to stand with the members of the Lgbt community in support of all athletes who will be competing in Sochi and I hope these Olympic Games will indeed be a watershed moment for the universal acceptance of all people," King says in a statement.
Just as eye-opening is who won't be part of the U.S. delegation. Neither the president, Vice President Joe Biden nor any current Cabinet secretaries will attend the games.

Nashville, Tenn. — Dierks Bentley has one day off the rest of this month and he's giving it to the families of fallen firefighters in Arizona.
The country music star will host the "Country Cares Concert" on July 22 in Prescott Valley, Ariz., where 19 members of a wildland firefighting crew were killed last week. Their deaths left behind 51 fatherless children, a number that sticks with the former Arizona resident as he waits for the birth of his third child later this year.
"We want to make as much for those families as we can and hopefully start something that will continue on long after the music is over as far as remembering the firefighters and their families and these kids that live on as well," Bentley said. "We want to help get something rolling to look after them and help them move forward."

The late Dr. George Tiller’s clinic in Wichita, Kansas is set to reopen. Mother Jones had an interview with the brave Julie Burkhart, who is spearheading the project.
There are quite a few people who won’t miss Pope Benedict XVI, including those who aren’t big on compulsory childbirth.
A teenager in Texas is claiming her parents are trying to force her to get an abortion. And this right here illustrates why it doesn’t work when anti-choice forces try to call the other side “pro-abortion.” Being pro-choice isn’t about thinking abortions are rad, it’s about wanting women to have control over their own bodies, regardless of...

Take June 2, when the former Massachusetts governor traveled to a quaint farm in Stratham, N.H., to "announce" his foregone conclusion of a 2012 presidential campaign. Romney has to overcome several mountainous challenges before capturing the Republican nomination, and so he spent most of the day trying to reduce them to molehills. Related story on The Daily Beast: Al Qaeda's Deadly New Nest
Both sides are wrong. King has said some stupid things but he isn't a bigot; he has reason to be concerned about an uptick in arrests of American-born Muslim extremists. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Attorney General Eric Holder are also worried about them.
But King would still be better off making this a one-day...

As the New York congressman prepares his controversial hearings on American Muslims, he's got support from the White House, he tells Lloyd Grove-praising Obama's war on terror and bashing birthers.
You'd think that President Obama's White House would be keeping its distance from House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter King-or at least trying to dissuade King from complicating U.S. relations with the Muslim world during this high-stakes period of extreme volatility.

The secretary of state is on a mission: putting women's rights at the forefront of a rapidly emerging new world order. In this week's Newsweek, Gayle Tzemach Lemmon talks to Clinton about the greatest role of her lifetime. Plus, see the results of Newsweek's survey about the most admired women in America.
Hillary Clinton seemed to be in a rare moment of repose while the Middle East erupted. She'd just returned from a surprise trip to Yemen and now sat for 30 minutes against a blue backdrop in the State Department's Washington broadcast studio as reports streamed in of Libya's violent crackdown on its own people.

But Clinton was far from a passive observer. She was in energetic discussion on the Egyptian news site Masrawy.com, where her presence excited a stream of questions-more than 6,500 in three days-from young people across Egypt.

The biggest headline to come out of Sunday night's (February 6) Super Bowl wasn't the incredible performance by Green Bay Packers quarterback and game Mvp Aaron Rodgers, nor was it the batch of high-profile commercials (lead by Eminem's dramatic endorsement of Chrysler), nor even the fact that 111 million people in the viewing audience made it the most-watched American television show in the history of the medium. Rather, people were still talking about Christina Aguilera's performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" before kickoff, which contained a pretty high-profile lyric flub.
Aguilera subsequently apologized and also got a little back-up from Fergie (who later participated in the halftime entertainment as both a member of the Black Eyed Peas and as a stand-in for Axl Rose), but that didn't stop the late night hosts from poking fun at her mishap. Just about everybody who performs a monologue ended up cracking a joke about Aguilera,...

Jennifer Lopez has been growing on us lately now that we see her (glowing, flawless) face on our TV while we watch American Idol this season. We have genuinely come to like her as a judge and somewhat regret our previous posts about how she is anything but Jenny From The Block. But let’s face it, as much as she claims she’s still keeping it real or whatever, the woman is going to President Obama’s White House Superbowl party this Sunday, something that the rest of us don’t have the privilege of doing.
Among the 100 or so invited guests who plan to eat The Presidential Sliders and 1600 Layer Dip (Get it? Because of the address? Anyone?) are J. Lo and Marc Anthony, as well as members of Obama’s staff like Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. Sounds like an eclectic bunch,...

Milwaukee — The guest list for President Barack Obama's White House Super Bowl party includes entertainers Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony as well as elected leaders from Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.
Obama said he'd go to the Super Bowl in Arlington, Texas, if the Bears won the Nfc title against the Green Bay Packers. But his team lost and the Packers are taking on the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

Russell Pearce of Arizona is the driving force behind the nation's harshest immigration crackdown. Terry Greene Sterling reports on the campaign to oust him from political life.
State Sen. Russell Pearce has been Arizona immigrants' worst nightmare in the last few years. Now, his critics in the Latino community and elsewhere are seeking a measure of revenge.
Related story on The Daily Beast: Obama's Super Bowl Shutout
Pearce made national headlines last year as the sponsor of a harsh crack down on unauthorized immigrants that was signed into law. This year, Pearce, Republican president of the state Senate and a man branded a "hardcore nativist"-is pushing for another stunner. He's advocating a law that would ban citizenship to what immigration hardliners call "anchor babies," children born in the United States to undocumented immigrant parents.
His opponents argue that this would violate the 14th Amendment, which grants citizenship to most babies born on American soil.

Wrestler-turned-politician Jesse Ventura is taking legal action against U.S. transport authorities after enduring a "humiliating" security search at an airport.
The former Minnesota Governor is suing officials at the Transportation Security Administration (Tsa) and the Department of Homeland Security, alleging his rights were violated when he was patted down at an airport in November.
In his lawsuit, the Demolition Man star maintains he was subjected to “humiliation and degradation through unwanted touching, gripping and rubbing of the intimate areas of his body" during the search.
Ventura wants a Minnesota federal judge to order bosses to cease their “warrantless and suspicionless” security measures and names Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Tsa Administrator John Pistole as defendants, according to GossipCop.com.

In a phone call where Napolitano offered condolences to the family, the father of the murdered agent, angry that the border is still not secure, told her "you gotta wake your man up in the White House" and she allegedly responded "he's done more in the last two years than any other president." Privacy watchdog group Epic and legendary consumer watchdog Ralph Nader claim the full-body scanners are easily hackable, store nude pictures for unknown periods of time, and don't even catch terrorists. Worse: They run a version of Windows Xp.
Newly installed full-body scanners at American airports give Transportation Security Administration (Tsa) employees the ability to use powerful advanced imaging technology (Ait) to see the naked bodies and genitalia of travelers. Four hundred ninety-two full body scanners are expected to be in use by December 2010 and an additional 500 units will be shipped out in 2011. The alternative is reportedly an embarrassing full-body search.
However, a new lawsuit by watchdog group Electronic Privacy Information Center (Epic) claims the body scanners are easily hackable, store nude pictures for unknown periods of time, and don't even catch terrorists. But that's not the worst news: the collective bargaining agent organization for American Airlines pilots alleges the machines pose a radiation risk.

New York -- CBS is launching panel talk show "The Talk," the first new network daytime talk show in a while, with some high-powered guests.

ABC's "The View" is a natural comparison that people cite, though spokespeople for both shows don't like the analogy. "We're not really competing against them for ratings or guests," a CBS official said.

Sure, we get it — Gaga is the popular/controversial choice. But is putting Lady Gaga and Beyonce in the top ten of Forbes’ 100 Most Powerful Women really meaningful?
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano, three Supreme Court justices — these are just five of the women who came below LG and Beyonce on Forbes’ Top 100 Most Powerful Women list, just released today.
First Lady Michelle Obama took the top spot — great, wonderful, hooray, etc. But Gaga was #7, Beyonce #9, and though they richly deserve their success, do we really think they’ve got more Power (with a capital P) than the woman who is fourth in line to the Presidency?
Here’s the obvious counterpoint: Cultural/media princesses like Gaga and B influence young women all over the globe, and can have tremendous impact with their mere presence.
But when it comes to the women flipping the switches,...

The feds are finally getting serious about piracy.
The Obama administration on Tuesday announced the first-ever strategic plan on intellectual property enforcement, which is intended to both boost and better coordinate efforts to stop piracy at home and abroad, online and through physical sales for American products including movies, TV shows, video games, computer software, pharmaceuticals, counterfeit goods and more.

Joining Biden for the announcement of a coordinated program across all federal agencies, worldwide, was a group including attorney general Eric Holder, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, U.S. Trade Rep Ron Kirk and Victoria Espinel, who was appointed in September as the first Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator.

Online privacy is a hot potato.
Vc notables Venrock, Kleiner Perkins, and Accel Partners are all betting big bucks on privacy startups. "Privacy is a big issue, and it's going to get bigger because people realize it can be used against you. That spells market opportunity," says Ted Schlein of Kleiner Perkins.
