As J.J. Abrams and company get underway shooting Star Wars: Episode VII, they’re still adding pieces to the cast. One of those pieces could be you.
In a very unusual move for the highly secretive film, a walk-on role for a member of the general public has been created and will be raffled off to benefit the charity Unicef.
The filmmaker explains himself in a video from Abu Dhabi, where Episode VII is currently shooting, below — which also offers a glimpse of one of the practical (that is, not digitally created) alien creatures from that far-off galaxy.

There are few games like the Metro series out there, and that’s honestly a shame. The original, Metro: 2033, broke away from the masses when its developer shunned the idea that a Fps needs to be nothing but bullet porn and then pulled us into an uncomfortable world with an outstanding level of immersion. Metro: Last Light tried to improve upon that formula, and while its team did so in some key ways, they seem to have lost track of what made Metro just so great to begin with. What’s left is a fine game in its own right, but it may not be what people are expecting to sit down with.
I’d like to start this by quoting one of my idols, Randy Pausch. “When there’s an elephant in the room, introduce them.” Metro 2033 owed no small part of its success to its unique “Ranger Mode,...

A terminally ill Trekkie was given a once-in-a-lifetime gift by film director J.J. Abrams, who set up a private screening of the forthcoming sequel "Star Trek Into Darkness" for the dying man.
As Mashable notes, the 41-year-old cancer patient and Star Trek fan was granted his wish to see the upcoming film after a post by a friend went viral on Reddit.
The Independent writes:
On Christmas Day, a post appeared on the social news website Reddit from a user calling himself “ideeeyut”, who was hoping for an “amazing act of generosity and kindness for a friend of mine who is really sick”.
Ideeeyut’s 41-year-old friend, identified only as “Dan”, was diagnosed with leukaemia three and a half years ago, the post explained, and had endured a bone marrow transplant, full body radiation treatment and more than three rounds of chemotherapy. Recently, a rare and unrelated vascular tumor had...

For years, J.J. Abrams has been making magic happen on screen -- and off.
The filmmaker is reportedly granting a dying man's plea to see "Star Trek Into Darkness," which doesn't hit theaters until May 2013.
According to a Christmas Day Reddit post, the man, identified only as Dan, was recently diagnosed with an untreatable, aggressive cancer and has just weeks to live. Even so, the huge "Star Trek" fan summoned the energy to attend a showing of "The Hobbit" just to see the extended nine-minute promo for "Into Darkness" -- only to discover it was not playing in his region. (The extended promo is limited to select theaters.)
Writes his wife on the social media site: "We, his friends and family, the love of my life - Would Love him to be able to see the Star Trek movie but even the 10 minutes of the trailer would be Amazing."

Actor Randy Quaid and his wife Evi were arrested in Montecito, California after they allegedly broke into their old house and were continuing to live there despite having sold the property in 2007. The new owner discovered the couple living in his guest house and called the police, who arrested the Quaids and removed them from the premises. After the arrest it was discovered that there had been some significant damage to the contents of the guest house, and allegedly the Quaids had also vandalized the property repeatedly. It’s kind of sad to hear of a once-successful actor sinking to these depths, but for anyone who’s seen the Vacation movies the Cousin Eddie parallels are staggering.
