Ever since Mick McCarthy was sacked, relegation has been inevitable for Wolverhampton Wanderers. The decision to dispense with the former Republic of Ireland manager was not in itself the axe that killed off Wolves survival hopes, but the calamity in appointing a successor meant the boys in gold never stood a chance.
Rather than receive a bump from a new manager with fresh ideas, the internal promotion of the affable Terry Connor brought with it a ‘meh’, and it is no surprise that results continued to go downhill. Yet Saturday’s 4-4 draw at Swansea showed there is still fight in this team as well as quality, although the 4-4 score line gives quick indication of their strengths and weaknesses.
First, let’s look at the finances. Relegation from the Premiership instantly means a shrinking of budgets, but Wolves are a well run club. TV money has been invested in...

Just as we were about to publish this article, former Rangers manager Walter Smith has emerged as favourite to take the Wolves managers job.
Smith is believed to have held talks with Wolves owner Steve Morgan and chief executive Jez Moxey about taking over until the end of the season after their original choice Alan Curbishely turned them down, and they aren’t certain of Steve Bruce’s credentials to keep them in the division.
63 year old Smith has reportedly turned down the Wolves job permanently but does want to see if he can keep them in the division with the 13 games remaining, before seeing if he wants the job indefinitely. Smith has been out of work since ending his second spell as Rangers boss last year. He was previously manager of Everton for four years, is a former manager of Scotland and was even Sir Alex. Ferguson’s...

Steve Bruce will be interviewed for the Wolves manager’s job today, according to widespread reports.
We heard yesterday that Bruce had compiled a ‘survival dossier’ to secure an interview with owner Steve Morgan and chief executive Jez Moxey and it has at least won him an interview.
Still odds-on bookies favourite Alan Curbishley interviewed for the job on Thursday and it is understood gave a mighty impression for how he would keep the struggling midlands side in the Premier League this term and he remains ahead in the race to replace Mick McCarthy.
Curbishley hasn’t managed a team in three and a half years, and it is his time away from the game after a difficult spell at West Ham United that has probably got the owners interested as he hasn’t failed as a manager as recently as the other candidates. Curbishley previously kept Charlton Athletic in...

Steve Bruce is so desperate to land the vacant Wolves manager’s job, he has complied a ‘survival dossier’ detailing how he could keep the Black Country side in the Premier League if he was appointed at the Molineux, reports The Daily Star.
Bruce, who lost his job at Sunderland in December, has been looking for a way back into Premier League management and this is the second job that has become available in the top flight since his sacking after Qpr mercilessly fired Neil Warnock and replaced him swiftly with Mark Hughes.
Wolves are believed to have drawn up a shortlist of candidates to replace outed Mick McCarthy, who lost his job on Monday morning after a miserable run of games, culminating in an embarrassing derby defeat from rivals West Brom. Owner Steve Morgan is back in the country today and expected to interview Steve Bruce, Neil Warnock and Alan Curbishley,...

By Wolves’ supremo Steve Morgan’s own admission, this season has not been good enough for Mick McCarthy’s men, and there is certainly a lot to be done in the second half of the season if the former Irish international is going to repay his Chairman’s faith and guide Wolves to safety.
Trouble is, there isn’t an awful lot of money available at Wolves – with estimates suggesting somewhere around £4m for the right player with experience at the top level who can bring immediate on-pitch gains to the struggling club – and January isn’t a buyer’s market. What is immediately obvious, regardless of who money is spent on, is that McCarthy needs his team to score more and concede less – at the minute their stats read like relegation fodder, and no amount of spirited displays will rescue Wolves if the end of the season comes and...
