It’s been a year since I said goodbye to the members of Southland’s incredibly attractive, incredibly damaged Lapd, and I still can’t let them go. You can blame it on the fact that we left John Cooper lying on the ground bleeding, or you can blame it on the fact that the finale was one of the show’s greatest episodes to date, but honestly, I think it’s simpler than all that. I blame it on the fact that I still can’t wrap my head around the idea that some people think a show that...

Since its premiere, The Good Wife has done what is nearly impossible for most shows- it is stunningly smart, perfectly paced, and beautifully written, and it has only gotten better in its game-changing fifth season. Guest stars are nothing new to the show, which has the most creative and entertaining guest casting on television, and it uses these performers incredibly well, folding them into stories the audience is already invested in alongside characters we care about. With each new guest star, The Good Wife manages to accomplish yet another often unachievable feat: making us care about the guests we’ll likely only see for a few episodes as much as the regular characters. The series has already peopled its world with a fantastic group of actors (check out Kate Arthur’s ranking of 76 of them from last year to get an idea), but it can always add a few more.

Being a cop on a case is no picnic. But playing a cop on a case ban be pretty grueling too. In an exclusive clip from the DVD release of "Southland" Season 5, Regina King -- who played Det. 2013 is only halfway done, but there’s a fair chance that, in a television context, it might well be looked back upon as the year any and all accepted rules of “quality television” became utterly meaningless and the promise of great things arrived in all shapes and sizes, from all directions. Consider Netflix’s House of Cards and the resurrected Arrested Development: existing properties, incredible casts, and a novel delivery method to boot. Consider HBO’s increasingly epic and brutal Game of Thrones and the way it’s managed to capture the zeitgeist despite firmly belonging to a long-derided genre. Consider the continued reign of FX’s animated spy comedy Archer, complete with the best rapid-fire humor on TV. Consider Mad Men, still relevant as it heads into its final season. Consider the wildly popular The Walking Dead and the long-form horror that is sure to follow in its wake.

After last week’s incredibly visceral, emotionally draining episode of Southland, it’s hard to imagine that tonight’s season 5 finale could have any juice left, but according to the stars of the show, the finale delivers the same shock factor, albeit slightly less graphic.
We caught up with four stars of the show — Ben McKenzie, Shawn Hatosy, Michael Cudlitz and Regina King — to talk about where their characters are headed in what could potentially be Southland’s series finale (if TNT decides against ordering a season 6). Here’s what tonight’s episode has in store:

Today’s headline involves a match made in TV heaven, which is some thirty years in the making. Actress Jackée Harry, often known as simply Jackée, has just booked the Girl Meets World pilot.
As you know, the Disney pilot, which has yet to be officially picked up, is a sequel to the popular ABC series Boy Meets World. In Girl Meets World we re-visit Cory, acted by Ben Savage and Topanga, acted by Danielle Fishel, who are now married with children. The show proposes to center on the couple’s daughter.
Well, another TV legend will appear in the pilot, reports the Huffington Post. It’s Jackée! The jury is still out on what role she’s playing.
Before we learned this latest development, the biggest news for the pilot was that Mr. Feeny actor, William Daniels would also appear in the pilot!

Regina King is making her Southland directorial debut tonight, and she stopped by our La studios to tell us all about playing double duty. Regina has been starring on the cop drama since the first season aired on NBC in 2009 and has continued her role as Detective Lydia Adams through its move to TNT. While she's flexed her directing chops in the past, this was the first time she's directed her own show and her Southland costars. Check out our interview to see what else Regina has to say about her son's musical aspirations, her character's complicated love life, and more. Southland airs Wednesdays at 10/9 Central.

Regina King: Much more difficult! I can say that because I directed a film on our break so I was able to actually have the first-hand experience of being only behind the camera and doing both and it’s more difficult doing both.

Southland's Regina King worked a double shift for the TNT drama's March 13 show, starring as Det. Lydia Adams and directing the episode. "Let's just say I didn't get much sleep," she says. Despite the gritty realism of its on-the-street look at the Los Angeles Police Department, Southland has always been more about the cops than the cases they work. In Season 5, which premieres Wednesday at 10/9c on TNT, the show takes its character-driven focus even further.

New York — When "Southland" returns to TNT on Wednesday, viewers will see the character of Los Angeles police Detective Lydia Adams as a new mom desperately in need of sleep.
"She's not juggling things so well. Motherhood is not coming naturally," said actress Regina King, who plays Adams, in a recent interview.
"I think Lydia has always been one of those (people) who has been pretty good at everything she's done, so I wouldn't say that it's coming as a shock to her; it's just a lot. She didn't anticipate having a colicky baby, so she's not getting any sleep, and that affects everything, especially being a detective. ... She's not like 100 percent."
Off-camera, King can definitely relate. She's not a new mom, but she's been pulling double duty, directing and acting in an upcoming episode of the acclaimed series.

Chicago – I know I’ve said this before but the season premiere of TNT’s “Southland,” airing tonight at 9pm Cst, feels even darker than last year or the year before. It could be just a show trying to top itself in terms of edgy subject matter but it feels genuine here, like the show is increasingly reflecting our darker times. Life on the streets of Los Angeles isn’t getting easier in 2013 and few shows have ever captured what it’s like to be a cop in the city of angels more dramatically than the best cop show since “The Shield.”

Drama, comedy, reality: This is one of those nights where TV is firing on all cylinders.
Let's start with the heavy lifting. One of TV's most encouraging survival stories returns with the fifth-season premiere of TNT's uncommonly gritty police drama Southland (10/9c), a network reject (from NBC's darkest period) that thrives on cable, with a sharper focus and a determined avoidance of procedural cliché.
Each episode is like a graphic tour of duty on the streets of Los Angeles, and in the opener, it's not always immediately clear if the patrol cops and detectives in the line of fire are witnessing a real crime or make believe or some other sort of scam. (One vignette involving a brawl between naked men in a sauna looks like an outtake from Spartacus.) "Treat it like a circus," seasoned training office John Cooper (Michael Cudlitz) advises his latest ride-along, an Afghan War vet with too much attitude.

Given Sheldon’s general lack of anything close to resembling appropriate social skills, I’m not at all surprised to learn he will be sat down by the head of human resources at the university he’s employed at for a talk regarding his attractive assistant Alex (Margo Harshman). And, once again, given Sheldon’s lack of social skills, I hardly think Sheldon has gotten himself in trouble for sexually harassing someone in a position ripe for such a thing. I mean, with Margo Harshman as your assistant, how could you not at least think about taking that out for a test ride. But Sheldon isn’t built for that, so this meeting is about something else.

The long-expected renewal of Southland was announced this morning in a message from TNT head of programming Michael Wright: TNT’s Southland will return. I’m proud today to announce that TNT has ordered 10 episodes for a fifth season of Southland, scheduled to begin in February 2013. Season after season, critics and fans alike have championed TNT’s Southland as one of television’s best dramas. This year, the show has not only solidified its impassioned fan base, but also picked up some new young-adult devotees along the way. In its fourth season, Southland centered its focus on four primary characters played by four outstanding actors: • Michael Cudlitz as Officer John Cooper, who bounced back from surgery and an addiction to painkillers only to be put under the microscope of a new partner. • Shawn Hatosy as Officer Sammy Bryant, who chose to give up being a detective and return to...

Southland is on the brink of renewal, Variety reports, with TNT and the studio haggling over how many episodes the fifth season will include: Warner Bros. wants thirteen, and TNT wants ten. If we're taking polls, Vulture would like thirteen, too, please. Southland is so good — think the pacing of an early ER with the dramatic potency of Homicide. Lucy Liu's arc last season was great, but we'd happily take double the Regina King for this go-round. Her Detective Lydia Adams is one of the most complicated, interesting characters on TV right now.

In the season finale of Southland (airing Tuesday at 10/9 central on TNT) my character, Ben Sherman, takes drastic action that is at the very least unethical and arguably immoral. In part, Ben is still working through the psychological trauma he experienced as a child when he saw his mother assaulted, But primarily, his actions are a direct result of his descent into nihilism, which is borne out of his inability to accomplish what he set out to do when he became a cop: make things better.
The tension between striving to make the world better and accepting the world as it is lies at the heart of almost every plotline in Southland. And it's what separates Southland from almost all the other "cop shows" on TV.
Many shows involving police portray a black-and-white world of good guys and bad guys -- cops and criminals. A crime occurs at the opening of each episode,...

The year is still young, but my early choice for most improved returning series of 2012 is TNT's gritty cop drama Southland, currently finishing up its fourth season. I can't recall another series that made several key changes so far into its run and emerged much better than it had ever been.
Beginning with its first season, which unfortunately was on then hit-repelling NBC, this saga of Los Angeles detectives and street cops was too grim and serious for its own good. That's not to say that its cast and production values weren't always first rate. But in its efforts to be as darkly realistic as possible it often became too depressing for weekly consumption. At least that's how I felt about it. Apparently I wasn't alone; Southland has always been somewhat ratings challenged, so much so that many industry observers didn't expect it to last as long as it has.
Big changes are afoot for Lydia Adams on TNT’s Southland (Tuesdays, 10/9cs). The newly pregnant detective is trying to keep the bun she has in the oven under wraps at work, but the dangers of the job and having a baby at her age will force her to make some tough decisions. And to add to the complications, she’s back on the street as a patrol officer, her portrayer Regina King tells TVLine.

From a compelling story involving a gay teen to one cast member seen without a stitch of clothing -- there's something for everyone in tonight's episode of TNT's stellar crime drama Southland.
In the episode, entitled "Legacy," partners Officer John Cooper (Michael Cudlitz) and Officer Jessica Tang (Lucy Liu) come to the aid of a gay teen and the situation hits close to home for Cooper.
Meanwhile, Detective Lydia Adams (Regina King) is dealing with her newly revealed pregnancy and, along with Detective Ruben Robinson (Dorian Missick), investigates a possible murder cover-up. And, finally, you won't want to miss the opening moments of the show where we get to see some major eye candy involving a nicely buffed Sammy Bryant (Shawn Hatosy) and a very small hand towel. You may never look at Sammy the same way. Trust me.

Southland has been known for its surprises.
Fans of the show will remember Nate's sudden and tragic death caught in the crossfire of a brutal gang war; Sammy returning home to learn his wife was pregnant by another man; Ben's short temper causing him to hit a civilian... more than once.
In this week's episode ("Identity"), my character Lydia joins the fray with a surprising storyline of her own. Early in the hour, we learn a shocking secret that she's kept from her colleagues for some time. Something she has no plans to reveal any time soon, because doing so could end her career as she knows it.
Although Lydia is fiercely compassionate on the job, she has worked hard for four seasons to keep her personal life intensely private. Even fans of the show, watching her life after she takes off the badge, speculate about what makes her tick.

Hey kids? Can you come in here a minute? Southland and I need to talk to you.
We know you guys really miss Steven Frank. We miss him too. But Steven has a family of his own to look after and other responsibilities, so he isn't able to recap Southland any more. Now this doesn't mean he doesn't miss you or that he loves you any less.
With Steven stepping back, AfterElton has asked me to step in. I know I won't be able to fill Steven's tremendous shoes but I hope I can do the show and its fans good enough service.
In last week's season 4 premiere we were introduced to two new regulars: Officer Jessica Tang (Lucy Liu), Officer John “Cuddlybear” Cooper's new partner who was tasked with evaluating his street readiness following his back surgery (and who had her own demon to overcome in the form of...

Grit, heart, and reality take center stage every episode of the devilishly dramatic show Southland. The show that keeps viewers' hearts pounding all episode long is coming back with all new episodes that will up the ante and bring the drama! While Southland may be criminally overlooked by award shows, it certainly isn't by loyal fans who don't want to be without this show for too long. Starting out airing on NBC for one season, this hypnotic high energy program really kicked into high gear when picked up by TNT for more unstoppable action!
TNT Network's slogan is "We Know Drama," and clearly snagging the roller coaster ride that is Southland solidifies this. Drama is at its finest when it is being given to you by the core cast of this powerful program. Michael Cudlitz helms a breathtaking cast of standout actors who bring strength and presence to their characters.

Chicago – TNT’s “Southland” continues its remarkable run tonight with a fourth season premiere that is as confident, accomplished, and entertaining as anything yet produced by this once-canceled program. It’s the best cop show on TV, a spectacular recreation of what it can be like to be on the ground and behind the wheel on the streets of Los Angeles. This is one of the most creatively successful and well-acted programs of its type in years and it just keeps getting better.
TV Rating: 5.0/5.0
What’s so satisfying about the unusual run of “Southland” is that people are noticing. The show that NBC canceled and TNT had to pull from the brink of another “brilliant but canceled” marathon grew by 8% in its third season. I expect similar growth this year after it appeared on several top ten lists for the year in television just ended. The team behind this...

"Southland" is one of those show that always delivers, both as a strong police procedural and a compelling character drama. With the show's return (Season 4 premieres Tues., Jan. 17, 10 p.m. Est on TNT), we thought we'd take a look at why it's so addictive.
Of course the characters are always at the heart of this show -- when the new season kicks off, Officer John Cooper (Michael Cudlitz) is back after some rehab and joined by a new partner; Officer Ben Sherman (Ben McKenzie) is no longer the "boot"; Det. Sammy Bryant (Shawn Hatosy) is moving on after the death of his partner and the birth of his baby; and Det. Lydia Adams (Regina King) continues to let her work and personal life intersect. But there's more to a good TV series than just compelling characters.

Their stated goal is to uphold the law of the land and put the bad guys behind bars, but every TV fan knows that our favorite small-screen cops, detectives, and agents — as well as their colleagues who semi-officially serve in crime-fighting capacities — have a duty to increase pulses and raise the temperatures of whatever rooms they enter.
We recently wrapped up a 64-player bracket tournament for male law-enforcement types — won by NCIS‘ Tony Dinozzo — and since we’re equal opportunity oglers/romantics, we figured we’d better construct a similar showdown for their female counterparts.

Southland has found yet another partner for Lydia Adams.
Dorian Missick has signed on for the role of Ruben Robinson, the latest detective who will be assigned to ride with Regina King's no-nonsense character. He'll first appear when season four debuts on January 17.
Missick most recently starred as Marty Voyt on NBC's short-lived The Cape. He'll be listed as a series regular in 2012, but we'll see how long he lasts as Lydia's partner.
Her most recent union with Josie Ochoa fell apart after Lydia was caught sleeping with Josie's son.

Much like ABC's Life on Mars, NBC's Prime Suspect is a remake of a show that didn't need a remake. The original ITV series, which starred Helen Mirren as the steely female detective Jane Tennison, is an undeniable classic of British television (and indeed of television in general). NBC shouldn't have remade the show because it couldn't -- and didn't -- improve upon the original. Instead, the new Prime Suspect is an Americanized facsimile that can't hold a candle to its earlier, groundbreaking British counterpart.
Like most American remakes of British shows, Prime Suspect has been drained of subtlety. What made Helen Mirren's Jane Tennison fascinating was her incredibly flawed nature. She was brilliant at her job, but her personal life was in shambles. Her relationships fell apart because of her dedication to her job, as well as because of her alcoholism. Sure, she was a badass when it came to doing her job,...

TNT has announced that gritty cop drama Southland has been renewed for a fourth season. Though no premiere date has been announced just yet, I'd imagine it'd be around the time that this season premiered, which was in early January. The show was picked up for another 10 episodes after enduring severe budget cuts this season and having ratings near or above their averages from last season. Southland is one of TNT's most critically loved shows and has maintained a steady, vocal fanbase after having some pretty tumultuous beginnings. After premiering on NBC Thursday nights as the type of edgy counter-programming to the network's comedy night that produced a phenomenon in ER, the show was canceled before the second season ever aired, with NBC saying that the show was just too dark for their line-up. Cut to TNT coming to the rescue, airing the first six NBC episodes along with the...
