Chances of a second season for Patricia Arquette's newest show have dried up. Apple TV+ has cancelled her High Desert series, according to the actress and executive producer. The show was created by Nancy Fichman, Katie Ford, and Jennifer Hoppe-House.
A single-camera dark comedy series, the High Desert TV show stars Arquette, Brad Garrett, Weruche Opia, Bernadette Peters, and Rupert Friend. Recurring players include Matt Dillon, Christine Taylor, Eric Petersen, Susan Park, Jeffrey Vincent Parise, Eden Brolin, Carmine Giovinazzo, and Carlo Rota. In the story, Peggy Newman (Arquette) is an on-again-off-again addict. She decides to make a new start after the death of her beloved mother (Peters), with whom she lived in the small desert town of Yucca Valley, California. Patricia Arquette-fronted comedy drama High Desert is ending after one season.
Apple has axed the series, which launched on May 17 and ran through June 21.
Arquette revealed the news on Instagram. “A lot of you have asked about High Desert and if there was going to be a second season, we just found out that it won’t be coming back. That’s a sad bummer for all of us,” she said.
Arquette, who played Peggy, thanked the writers, crew and actors. “I loved Peggy and that punk rock world,” she added. “You can’t win ‘em all and it sucks. I’ve got this cactus and we’re going to hug it out.”

Whilst it’s set in 1996, Candy Land reminds me very much of the 70s exploitation era of filmmaking, where the lines between genres blurred and a wide variety of subject matter was explored by filmmakers willing to take chances on stories that the mainstream wouldn’t tell… The latter of which is certainly the case here as writer/director John Swab tells the story of Remy (Olivia Luccardi; It Follows), a seemingly naive and devout young woman, who finds herself cast out from her religious cult. With no place to turn, she immerses herself into the underground world of truck stop sex workers a.k.a. “lot lizards,” courtesy of her hosts, Sadie (Sam Quartin; Body Brokers), Riley (Eden Brolin; Yellowstone), Liv (Virginia Rand) and Levi (Owen Campbell; X...

Alcarràs, winner of the Golden Bear in Berlin, opens on five screens in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, presented by Mubi; Quiver Distribution releases Candy Land in nine theaters; and Sony’s Tom Hanks-starring A Man Called Otto, Uar’s Women Talking and IFC Films’ Corsage move into moderate expansions as the broader specialty market barrels into Oscar nominations and a new year of reckoning with adult audiences.
The conversation about what ails the arthouse market is still treading water. Some major arthouses are Mia in a key market. With rare exceptions, audiences are failing to embrace indie titles with the gusto they’ve shown in the past. Everything Everywhere All At Once cleaned up but that’s feelgood, versus downbeat, which an emotionally exhausted moviegoing public may be avoiding. It’s not clear awards kudos will change that.

Let’s get right into things, shall we?
Here are the first four horror releases of 2023, which are all out Now!
The 2023 horror season kicks off with the critically acclaimed M3GAN (read Meagan’s review), which is now playing in theaters. The premise? It’s essentially Annabelle meets Terminator!
M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Grimy truck stops serve as prime real estate in horror. The setting invokes a sense of desolate lawlessness as strangers pass through a revolving door of anonymity. Don’t even bother entering the filthy, unkept bathrooms; bad things always happen there. It’s precisely this setting where Candy Land unfurls its sleazy slasher filled with broken dreams, religious repression, and a sensitive depiction of sex workers right before a grim turn.
Candy Land introduces Sadie (Sam Quartin) and Liv (Virginia Rand), Riley (Eden Brolin), and Levi (Owen Campbell), a group of tight-knit sex workers dubbed “lot lizards.” They live out of the motel and spend their days chatting near the gas station, snowballs and soda in hand, in between sexual encounters in bathroom stalls or truck cabs. The lot lizards are presided over by Madame Nora (Guinevere Turner) and morally ambiguous Sheriff Rex (William Baldwin). Then the lot lizards find...

Every horny trucker heading west on Route 66 knows that Exit 16 is the last place to get any real action before you hit California. In horny trucker social circles, the rest stop has become so synonymous with its supply of “clean, drug-free pussy” that it’s earned its own unique Cb radio handle: “Candy Land.”
Watching a horror movie about the illicit, transactional affairs that take place in the cabs of these semi-trucks is every bit as entertaining as you might expect. Equal parts slasher flick and softcore porn, writer-director . Pervy grindhouse sleaze oozes out of every frame, to the point where it feels like the only proper viewing method would be a scratched 35mm print in a theater with three different inexplicably sticky substances on the floor. In other words, it’s glorious.

Plot: After a religious young woman joins a group of truck stop sex workers (a.k.a. lot lizards), someone starts murdering people in and around the truck stop.
Review: After making a handful of crime dramas and thrillers, writer/director John Swab shifts into the horror genre with his fifth feature Candy Land – but he definitely didn’t just dive into formula or clichê with his first horror project, as evident from the fact that he cited ‘90s cult films like Bully and Welcome to the Dollhouse as sources of inspiration. Candy Land has been described as a truck stop slasher, and it does become that in its second half, but the influence of ‘90s indie dramas is clearly felt in the movie. It’s even set in the ‘90s; around Christmas 1996, to be exact. So it’s a bit of a shame that it’s being released in January,...

This Yellowstone review contains spoilers.
Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 7
Throughout this season, Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan has been preparing his audience for the end. The end of the purple mountains majesty of states like Montana, as they become overdeveloped and lose all their character. The end of the cowboy way of life and ranches across the country that can no longer maintain the life and the land they’ve known, in some cases, for generations. Most poignantly, Sheridan may even be preparing audiences for the end of Yellowstone itself.
“The Dream is Not Me” makes even the most diehard fan wonder what’s to come next, which is something this season has lacked for the first half-dozen episodes. Sheridan does well to create intrigue about the future of the ranch, and some of the characters, but what’s truly intriguing is how often he’s been looking to the past, first.

"I will find a way, I will figure it out, I will help you - I promise!" Gravitas has released the official trailer for the indie drama Tyger Tyger, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Kerry Mondragon. This is described as a "pandemic fantasy-thriller" and/or "stylized indie drama". A selfless woman and her mute friend kidnap a drug addict after robbing a pharmacy then hit the road to distribute the "life saving" medication, but find themselves trapped in the fringe lands of a law-less psychedelic city in a life-or-death adventure. Sounds crazy! Love the poster art, but that's about it. Tyger Tyger stars Dylan Sprouse, Sam Quartin, Eden Brolin, Craig Stark, Max Madsen, and Barbara Palvin. This looks rather trippy and vibrant, not necessarily in a good way, but maybe there's something interesting going on here. Have a look. Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Kerry Mondragon's Tyger Tyger,...

We had the pleasure of chatting with Yellowstone star, Jefferson White, about our favorite TV show, and we can't wait for you to read what he shared.
When Jimmy first arrived on the scene, he was a no-good kid seeking a second chance with the urging of his grandfather. John Dutton and the Yellowstone gave him that chance, and he's found friends and family that will last forever.
Of course, it's unlikely he knew what he was getting into when he took the brand, and we asked Jeff about that and a lot more.
How much did you know about horseback riding when you got hired for Yellowstone?
Nothing. I had never ridden a horse in my life. I've never spent any time around horses, so it's been an incredible joy, and I feel incredibly lucky for the opportunity to learn alongside Jimmy.
Jimmy has been pretty clueless too, so...

Teeter has taken Yellowstone by storm. She's funny and fearless, and part of that success (in addition to Taylor Sheridan's impeccable writing) is the woman who portrays her -- Jen Landon.
Jen got her start in acting alongside her father, Michael Landon, as a little girl in an episode of Touched by An Angel. She carries acting in her genes, much like her costar, Eden Brolin.
During our chat, Jen talks about joining Yellowstone and adoption the one-of-a-kind dialect Sheridan created for Teeter, how working with animals empowers her, her new fitness secret, and more. Enjoy!
How much did you know about Yellowstone before joining the cast?
Oh my goodness. Well, I was really familiar with Taylor's other work and was such a huge fan of his. Found out he had a show. Watched it. I thought it was phenomenal. And that's what I knew about Yellowstone.

Eden Brolin is a legacy actor, coming from a talented family. James Brolin is her grandfather, and Josh Brolin her father.
She brings her considerable talents to Yellowstone Season 3 as Mia, a barrel racer who set her sights on Jimmy and never let go.
For Eden, it stings a little bit that people imagined Mia had ulterior motives when it came to Jimmy, but as a fan of Yellowstone, she understands that urge, too.
So enjoy the conversation we had as fans of the series and from her special perspective now being one of the crew.

Not only does Eden Brolin have more than a decade of experience in the entertainment industry, she’s also been around it her entire life. Kevin Costner’s John Dutton has warded off all manner of hostile parties seeking to take his expansive Montana land in “Yellowstone,” but the billionaire rancher is facing a new threat in Season 3: A bunch of suits who want to build an airport on his property. Paramount Network has unveiled the trailer for its gritty drama’s upcoming third season, which promises to raise the stakes even further when the show returns on Father’s Day, June 21.
“Yellowstone” Season 3 will center on the Dutton family’s conflict with the well-connected hedge fund manager Roarke Carter (“Lost” alum Josh Holloway), who seeks to build an airport and city in the middle of Yellowstone. Most of the trailer centers on the show’s various characters threatening one another — Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) warns Roarke that he is “the trailer park, I am the tornado” at one point — or emoting with guns or alcohol.

Awww yeah!
The official trailer for Yellowstone Season 3 is out, and it is full of meaty teases for us to digest!
Someone is buying land in the valley with the intent of building an airport, and as Beth says, they'll build a city around that airport. That means all that they love is in jeopardy. Again.
Anyone who has watched their hometown move the airport away from the congestion of the city to greener pastures knows that the urban sprawl crawls directly to the airport.
With the Duttons already torn to shreds after the violent and unpredictable Yellowstone Season 2, so they'll need all hands on deck to protect what's theirs.
Every Dutton has been ravaged in some way.
Beth was brutally attacked. Kayce and Monica temporarily lost their son to kidnappers. Jamie got so caught up in his lies and insecurities that he killed a woman in cold blood.
John Dutton,...

Actor and “Bear State” native Clark Duke (The Office, Kick-Ass, Hot Tub Time Machine) shows he has good taste by opening his directorial debut with a quote from Charles Portis, an author of such cult-inspiring comic invention that he’s been compared to Mark Twain, Cormac McCarthy, and Tom Wolfe. Most of the fuss about Portis stems from his 1968 novel True Grit, which Hollywood adapted twice, once with an Oscar-winning John Wayne and then a Coen brothers version with Jeff Bridges. But if you want the cream of this Dixie yarn-spinner’s crop,...

A first film from an actor turned director is always an interesting thing to study. In particular, what kind of movie they choose to make their first time out. For Clark Duke, he really seems to have wanted to honor his cinematic influences, namely the Coen Brothers. Arkansas, his directorial debut, is the sort of crime tale, with occasional bursts of dark humor, that Joel Coen and Ethan Coen made a career out of, especially in their early days. Duke, however, ends up with a much more uneven effort than the Coen Brothers, even if it does display the sort of chops that will serve him well in the future. The movie is a crime thriller, centered on two low level thugs who get caught up in a wave of violence. Kyle (Liam Hemsworth) and Swin (Clark Duke) are the two gangsters, who are soon to begin living under the...

Newly arrived on home video -- Apple, Amazon, and On Demand platforms, plus Blu-ray and DVD -- the dark comic crime flick Arakansas features a plethora of familiar faces, affecting accents and pretending to be tough guys. Taken straight, I think I would pass, but since it's billed as a 'dark comedy,' it sounds much more palatable. Actor Clark Duke, known for broad comedies like Hot Tub Time Machine, makes his feature directorial debut and also plays a leading role, alongside Liam Hemsworth, Michael Kenneth Williams, Vivica A. Fox, Eden Brolin, and Chandler Duke with John Malkovich and Vince Vaughn. Those names alone draw my interest. Add to that the source material, the debut novel by John Brandon, which likely gives the film a broader...

As Kyle (Liam Hemsworth) shares during an early voiceover, organized crime in the backwoods of southern America isn’t very organized. This is good since few of the people in the wholesale drug dealing business of which he’s operated for just a little while are smart. He probably wouldn’t call himself very smart either since he’s content to follow his orders to the letter rather than harbor ambitions about becoming the boss. He’s perceptive in ways that ensure he maintains an upper hand in all situations, but never greedy enough to tip things so far off-balance that he has nowhere to go but down. Kyle sees the angles, parses secrets, and plans ahead in the hopes of staying alive long enough for none of it to matter.
So it’s no surprise he’d end up getting paired with his antithesis in Swin (Clark Duke). Kyle...

"I'm with Frog – I've been ordered to intervene." Lionsgate has debuted the official trailer for an ensemble crime drama titled simply Arkansas, based on the book of the same name. Kyle and Swin are drug couriers who live by the orders of an Arkansas-based drug kingpin named Frog, whom they've never met. But when a deal goes horribly wrong, the consequences are considerably deadly, as Frog mistakenly sees them as a threat to his empire. Arkansas "weaves together three decades of Deep South drug trafficking to explore the cycle of violence that turns young men into criminals, and old men into legends." Starring an ensemble cast including Vince Vaughn as Frog, Liam Hemsworth & Clark Duke as Kyle & Swin, John Malkovich, Vivica A. Fox, Eden Brolin, Michael Kenneth Williams, Brad William Henke, Patrick Muldoon, Jeff Chase, and Barry Primus. This looks mildly entertaining, Malkovich is the best part of the footage.

"You think I don't know what you're doing for pills?" Uncork'd Entertainment has debuted the trailer for an indie film titled Back Fork, a small town addiction drama that's written, directed, produced by, and stars West Virginia-born actor Josh Stewart. Stewart plays Waylon, a man struggling to hold his life and family together after a heartbreaking tragedy. He and his wife, Nida, barely recognize themselves, let alone each other. Another depressing film about the opioid epidemic in America. But these are stories that need to be told. Also starring A.J. Cook, Agnes Bruckner, Wade Williams, Eden Brolin, David Selby, and Dorothy Lyman. Give this a look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Josh Stewart's Back Fork,...
