I first saw Pet Sematary (no, that’s not a mispell) in the same way that I saw a lot of the big, essential genre/horror movies for the first time: on the Saturday night double-bill on Space, the Canadian sci-fi channel. I can’t even count how many Saturday nights I spent glued to the TV, watching schlock and classics (and classics of schlock) and having my tastes as a film geek molded in ways I’m still discovering. I’m not sure I’ve actually ever gone back and revisited that, despite having a copy that I got as a birthday present, but I’m thinking now might be the time. A new documentary is on its way, the latest in what seems like a trend of genre film docs chronicling the stories behind the mainstays of sci-fi and horror.

Stephen King’s Pet Sematary might just be one of the most terrifying films that I’ve seen. Even to this day, when I watch the film it freaks me the fuck out. I saw this movie for the first time when I was around 10 or 11 years old, and I couldn’t sleep for months! At night as I lay in bed I just stared at the black dark corner of my room waiting for Zelda to come crawling out and run over to my bed screaming at me. Because of that, it’s one of my favorite horror films ever!

Terror Films has released the documentary Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary. The film was released on April 21st. The film celebrates the 27th Anniversary release of the groundbreaking horror film Pet Sematary (1989). This documentary looks at the path the film took in production and afterwards. The documentary is available now, at the Terror Films website. And, the release trailer and poster art are hosted here. Documentarians John Campopiano and Justin White took five years to develop the film. They say of their filmmaking journey: “when we first set out for Maine nearly six years ago we thought, at most, we would take some photographs of the filming locations from Stephen King's Pet Sematary and post them to social media. But upon that very first visit we knew that we had stumbled upon something special -- stories, people, and places." Those stories are now available in Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary,...

As a horror fan, I get jazzed up for genre documentaries, such as the Nightmare on Elm Street doc Never Sleep Again or His Name Was Jason: 30 Years of Friday the 13th, and even when it.s just a loony take on a single classic film, like Room 237.s exploration of Stanley Kubrick.s The Shining. But this isn.t to say all horror films should get their own documentaries, since that.s what DVD extras are for. So does Mary Lambert.s 1989 Stephen King adaptation of Pet Sematary need its own in-depth documentary, the fan-made Unearthed & Unbound: The Path to Pet Sematary? Probably not, but that doesn.t mean I won.t watch the hell out of it, as Pet Sematary is one of the most haunting stories I.ve ever read and seen. Filmmakers and megafans John Campopiano and Justin White have been working on their...

Want to show your kids some of your favorite scary movies, but not sure how they will handle the scares? Take them to Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles and take a peek at artist Justin White's "Rated G" art exhibit to ease them into it gently.
White has taken scenes from some of our favorite adult movies (as in R-rated, not porno) and turned them into kid-friendly cartoon scenes. They are all on display at Gallery 1988, Los Angeles's premiere pop culture art gallery. The exhibit is on display through the end of November, but many of the pieces can be purchased on the Gallery 1988 website.
