“The reason I’m successful is because I’m passing, straight up,” said producer Naomi Scott, who is Chamorro (Indigenous people of the Mariana Islands), during the Pasifika Entertainment Advancement Komiti (Peak)’s second annual Peak Conversations panel. It was held on the first day of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month last Wednesday night.
“I’m married to a white man who’s famous. I don’t want to sugarcoat it,” added Scott, who is married to actor Adam Scott. “But now that I’m here, I have a responsibility to keep the door open.”
The experience of Pasifika women in Hollywood was at the center of the discussion in West Hollywood, created to celebrate Pacific Islander filmmaking, entertainment and community.
Scott was joined on the panel by Moana and Mean Girls star Auli’i Cravalho and RuPaul‘s Drag Race season 15 winner Sasha Colby, who are both Hawaiian. “There’s...

The Pasifika Entertainment Advancement Komiti (Peak) announced their Peak Conversations panel, sponsored by Amazon MGM Studios, will take place in Los Angeles on May 1.
The first celebration of Pasifika women in Hollywood will feature and highlight the achievements Moana and Mean Girls actress Auli’i Cravalho, RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Sasha Colby, and Great Scott Productions founder Naomi Scott with moderation by Moana 2, and Thai Cave Rescue screenwriter Dana Ledoux Miller. The talanoa (or discussion) will focus on issues specific to Pasifika women and their journeys in the entertainment industry.
“May is Aapi Heritage Month yet you’ll find Pasifika (or Pacific Islander) people are rarely prioritized and often erased in celebrations despite us being named in them. Most Aapi organizations have no Pasifika staff or even board members so it’s why Peak exists. We’re the only Pasifika-led organization doing this work who will advocate for us the way we do.

In case the box office returns for director Rob Marshall's "The Little Mermaid" this weekend didn't tip you off, Disney is nowhere near done remaking its animated features as live-action/CGI films. Personally, I'm just hoping we get a live-action "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" or a "The Black Cauldron" remake that does proper justice to Lloyd Alexander's "The Chronicles of Prydain." To be clear, I'm in no way advocating for Disney to keep churning out these live-action remakes. But seeing as they're clearly not going to stop doing that anytime soon, we might as well try and get something interesting and unexpected out of this nonsense, right?
Anyway, The Hollywood Reporter has gotten wind that Thomas Kail has been hired to direct "Moana," a live-action take on the studio's hit 2016 animated musical film that was only just announced back in April. Dwayne Johnson will reprise his role from...

Back in April, we learned (via an announcement from Dwayne Johnson) that Disney was planning to add to its roster of live-action films adapted from its animated canon with Moana. Now we know that Hamilton director Thomas Kail will be calling the shots.
Confirmed today by The Hollywood Reporter but originally broken by scooper Daniel Richtman at his Patreon page, the news will mark Kail's narrative feature directorial debut.
Moana told the story of a young woman who disobeys her father, the chief of an island that is dealing with an impending ecological disaster and goes off on a quest to reunite a mystical relic with its owner, a goddess named Te Fiti. Along the way, she releases trickster demigod Maui (Johnson) from his island prison, is captured by a monstrous crab, and finds the strength to become the chief her father believed she could be.

“Moana” has found its director. Thomas Kail (“Hamilton”) has signed on to direct the live-action reimagining of Disney Animation’s 2016 musical hit, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Dwayne Johnson will be reprising his role as demigod Maui for the reimagined version. Johnson previously revealed the news in a taped segment featured in Disney’s annual shareholder meeting.
Like its animated predecessor, the film will celebrate the communities and traditions of Pacific Islanders as seen through the eyes of a young woman eager to pave her own path. Moana’s journey of self-discovery and reflection on the lives of her ancestors won hearts worldwide, as did her newfound friendship with an exiled demigod named Maui.

Auli’i Cravalho will not be reprising her starring role in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of “Moana.” The actor, who voiced the original character in 2016 animated film, posted a video to Instagram Friday sharing the news.
“When I was cast as Moana at 14, it wonderfully changed my life and started my career,” the now 22-year-old said. “In this live-action retelling, I will not be reprising the role. I believe it is absolutely vital that casting accurately represents the characters and stories we want to tell.”
“I can’t wait to find the next actress to portray Moana’s courageous spirit, undeniable wit and emotional strength,” Cravalho said. She will be an executive producer on the film.
“I’m truly honored to pass this baton to the next woman of Pacific Island descent to honor our incredible Pacific peoples, cultures and communities that help inspire her story, and I look forward...

During a panel on the future of Pasifika storytelling held in downtown Los Angeles Thursday evening by the Pasifika Entertainment Advancement Komiti, Peak co-founder and executive director Kristian Fanene Schmidt proposed a question to the participants: Should the AA be separated from the Pi in Aapi? The answer regarding Asian American and Pacific Islander representation in Hollywood is as complicated as the enduring fight for greater pan-Pacific presence onscreen, the panelists noted, though the undercurrent of the hesitant responses was indeed “yes.”
“Last night at the Writer’s Guild meeting there was an Asian writer who walked up on the question side and said, ‘I’m Asian, I’m an Asian American writer, and it’s Asian American month, and I screamed out, ‘What about the PIs?’” recalled Freddie Gutierrez, a writer for Nickelodeon’s That Girl Lay Lay, who hails from Guam. “She looked and she just kept on going.

Disney has successfully mined its animated back catalogue for live-action (usually with CG elements) remakes for years now. But they're usually decades after the originals. With the announcement – originally courtesy of CEO Bob Iger to shareholders, but via The Rock for audiences — that 2016's Moana is joining the list – you have to wonder if the live-action version will be announced for the likes of say, the upcoming Wish a week after the original arrives.
It's early days for the new movie, but from the sounds of it, Dwayne Johnson will certainly be back as Maui. "I’m deeply humbled and overcome with gratitude to bring the beautiful story of Moana to the live-action big screen," he says in a statement. "This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength. I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul,...

If you thought Disney was slowing down with its live-action remakes of animated hits, you thought wrong. Instead, the Mouse House is putting its foot on the accelerator by announcing a live-action remake of "Moana," a mere six years and change after the original arrived in theaters. Dwayne Johnson, who voiced the South Pacific demigod Maui in the animated film and even showed off his singing skills in the number "You're Welcome," announced the "reimagining" (Disney's preferred branding for its live-action remakes) in a video that also features his two youngest daughters, Jasmine and Tiana.
Johnson intends to reprise his role as Maui, but while actress Auli'i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the 2016 original, is attached as an executive producer, there's no indication yet that she'll be returning on-screen alongside Johnson. The rescue, in summer 2018, of a youth soccer team and their coach from a flooded cave system in Thailand remains one of the most outright inspiring stories of recent years. Amidst intense interest and scrutiny, an international team came up with a plan to anesthetize the boys and maneuver them out of the flooded caves before monsoon rains intensified. It’s a tense story, and one with an outcome that isn’t just upbeat but is genuinely astounding. Little wonder that it’s lent itself to repeated retellings, including last year’s documentary “The Cave” and this year’s quietly released Ron Howard drama “Thirteen Lives,” starring Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell as the heroic British cave divers.

Chances are you’ve heard the harrowing story of the Wild Boars soccer team. A group of 12 players, ages 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old coach spent roughly three weeks trapped inside Thailand’s Tham Luang cave before being evacuated by an international team of heroes who never gave up on them. The 2018 ordeal captured the hearts and minds of the world, and has been retold in both documentaries and dramatizations that include the recent Ron Howard Prime Video movie Thirteen Lives. The upcoming Thai Cave Rescue digs a little deeper as a Netflix limited series. Shot entirely in Thailand with locals as part of the cast, the production even filmed inside the homes of those who lived through it. Writer and showrunner Dana Ledoux Miller is most proud of the authenticity the six episodes bring. “I think this show has a lot for everyone. It is full of suspense and action,...

Sk Global’s “Thai Cave Rescue” series faced almost as many obstacles as the specialist divers drafted to bring out 12 boys and their coach from a waterlogged grotto in summer 2018 in front of a blaze of media attention and an expectant Thai nation.
The show debuts on Netflix on Thursday, a timing that means it follows three feature-length depictions and multiple news media specials retelling the watery events.
It is also the retelling that is most closely associated with the Thai government, which auditioned prospective production companies and streamers and has carefully held the real-life rescued youngsters close to its chest.
The platform’s answer has been to stress authenticity, access and width as much as possible.
“We get to show the heroism of all the people of Thailand, and we get to speak about the effect on the boys’ families,” said co-showrunner and screenwriter Dana Ledoux Miller at an...

Netflix will on September 22 release its long-gestating drama about the real-life rescue of 12 boys and an adult who were trapped in a cave in northern Thailand. Thai Cave Rescue will show how the Wild Boars soccer team’s afternoon exploring with their 25-year-old coach went disastrously wrong when heavy rain trapped them inside, leading to a massive international recovery mission that engrossed the world.
Netflix partnered with filmmakers across Thailand and beyond to create the six-episode series, which is filmed entirely in the Asian nation, after jointly acquiring rights to the story with Sk Global Entertainment back in 2019. The drama unfolds through the perspectives of the boys at the center of the rescue.
Created by Michael Russell Gunn and Dana Ledoux Miller, the limited series is directed by Thailand’s Baz Poonpiriya and U.S. director Kevin Tancharoen. Both also serve as executive producers alongside Jon M. Chu and Lance Johnson for Electric Somewhere; John Penotti (Crazy Rich Asians) for Sk Global Entertainment; John Logan Pierson.
Cast includes Papangkorn “Beam” Lerkchaleampote as Coach Eak, Thaneth “Ek” Warakulnukroh as Chiang Rai governor Narongsak Osottanakorn, and Urassaya “Yaya” Sperbund and Manatsanun “Donut” Phanlerdwongsakul as Kelly and Pim — fictional representatives of the real-world hydraulic engineers and park rangers that made the incredible rescue possible. Supakorn “Tok” Kitsuwan is former Navy Seal diver Saman “Ja Sam” Gunan, and Bloom Varin plays army doctor Colonel Bhak Loharjun.
The boys are played by 12 young local actors, with filming taking place at the homes of the real boys and Tham Luang, where they were trapped, itself.
As with the real mission, Thai Cave Rescue international actors to portray key contributors in this rescue, including Nicholas Bell as Vern Unsworth, Nicholas Farnell as John Volanthen, Christopher Stollery as Rick Stanton, Rodger Corser as Dr. Richard “Harry” Harris, and Damon Herriman as Dr. Craig Challen.
“Thai Cave Rescue is the first opportunity for audiences worldwide to see the Tham Luang story in a new and more emotional light — centering the perspectives of the 12 Wild Boars, Coach Eak, and heroes like Saman ‘Ja Sam’ Gunan, whose lives beyond the operation remain largely outside the public spotlight,” said Poonpiriya.
Tancharoen added: “As a Thai American, I feel so incredibly fortunate to help tell this story through the lens and soul of the Thaipeople. I wanted to bring my experience of telling big superhero stories to the real world. One where real-life superheroes worked together for a common cause regardless of where they were from, and the only superpowers are the perseverance of the human spirit and what we can accomplish when we work together.”
Ron Howard and MGM’s Thai cave rescue film Thirteen Lives is set for its theatrical debut on Friday (July 29). Read Todd McCarthy’s review here. The story was also told in Nat Geo documentary The Rescue last year and in indie film The Cave back in 2019.

Netflix has set a Sept. 22 release date for “Thai Cave Rescue,” its six-part mini series about the dramatic events of July 2018 when 12 boys and their football coach were trapped in flooded limestone caves near Chiang Rai.
Their plight sparked an unprecedented international rescue effort that ended with the loss of just one life and a flurry of film and TV productions.
The Netflix series is at least the fourth on-screen retelling of the rescue tale and will follow two other efforts releasing over the next weeks. Netflix touts its series as “the most authentic and expansive retelling yet.”
First into the market, in 2019, was “The Cave,” by Thai-British director-producer Tom Waller, which mixed reconstructions and news footage. It gave prominent position to Europe-based rescue diver Jim Warny playing himself. And it broke ground by clearly depicting the controversial decision to fully sedate the boys during their extraction. Despite pushback from provincial officials,...
