One of the best films to play the festivals, including Fantasia, last year was Gabriel Carrer and Reese Eveneshen’s home invasion film For the Sake of Vicious. So when I started hearing a similar buzz about Baby Money, directed by Luc Walpoth and Mikhael Bassilli and co-written by Bassilli and Mj Palo, I saw some similarities and decided to check it out.
Minny and Gil are about to become parents. They’re also out of money and out of options. Desperate for cash they join Tony and Dom in what should be an easy bit of burglary. The three men go in, grab the loot and Minny does the driving.

Arriving on digital platforms today is For the Sake of Vicious, a gnarly and tense home invasion thriller from filmmakers Gabriel Carrer and Reese Eveneshen that lives up to its memorable name (this writer highly recommends checking it out). Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with the directing duo of the film, and they discussed how the project was initially borne out of their own anger and frustrations, their experiences collaborating with their core actors—Lora Burke, Nick Smyth, and Colin Paradine—as well as the challenges they faced during their ambitious and intimate shoot.
Great to speak with you both today. Something that I really appreciated about this film is that it is very cinematic, and yet there's something about it that almost feels like it could be a stage play, because of how intimate the filmmaking feels and all the different storytelling elements at play. I'd...

Actress Lora Burke has been on something of a roll when it comes to genre films – she was astonishing in 2017s Poor Agnes, amazing in 2018s Lifechanger and now she’s back with For the Sake of Vicious, a cross between a home invasion thriller and the John Carpenter classic Assault on Precinct 13.
Set on Halloween (when else?) For the Sake of Vicious opens with kindhearted nurse Romina (Lora Burke), after a long shift at the hospital, coming home and finding a hostage in her house! We can tell it's been a long day when Romina (Lora Burke) gets home from the hospital where she works. All she wants to do is settle down with her son, who is being looked after elsewhere, and have a peaceful evening, but she's barely through the door before she realises that there's something very, very wrong. There's a man lying on the floor bleeding and crying out in pain. Then the perpetrator appears, seizing her to stifle her panic, and he's somebody she knows.
It's going to be a long night.
The set-up for Gabriel Carrer and Reese Eveneshen's latest film is fairly simple. Chris (Nick Smyth) has injured Alan (Colin Paradine), and wants Romina to keep him alive until he can finish extracting information. Whilst this goes strongly against Romina's instincts as a health and care professional (and human being), she can't bring herself to condemn Chris because she knows.

*full disclosure: access to the online Fantasia Film Festival was provided by the fine folks at the festival. Directors/writers: Gabriel Carrer and Reese Eveneshen. Cast: Lora Burke, Nick Smyth, Colin Paradine and T.J. Kennedy. For the Sake of Vicious had its World Premiere at this year's Fantasia Film Festival. A Canadian film, from filmmakers Gabriel Carrer (The Demolisher) and Reese Eveneshen (Defective), this indie title brings a biker gang into a tiny kitchen for a vigilante beatdown. Carrer's synth' score helps amplify some of the film's tension. Meanwhile, the pacing only takes off near the final half hour. In the meantime, the film's topic is a bit dire and early scenes are constrained by the simple setting. For the Sake of Vicious will entertain a few patient indie thriller fans out there. The story could have used a bit more meat on the bone. However, the film is centered...

For The Sake Of Vicious Photo: Courtesy of Fantasia
As well as consistently coming up with content that pushes artistic boundaries, the Fantasia International Film Festival has a knack for finding films that go to extremes. Gabriel Carrer and Reese Eveneshen’s For The Sake Of Vicious is set mostly in a single location, with just a few actors, but packs in a plot that’s twistier than you might expect and a second half filled with unrelenting violence. It’s the kind of film that will leave you physically shaken, as if you’ve been in a fight yourself. At a roundtable I attended with the directors, they were asked how the story developed.
“The first conception of it was, there is people trapped in a house, essentially, but it was in the mid hot summer during a blackout,” says Gabriel. “And this study was more of how people...

Bleed With Me from Amelia Moses, For The Sake of Vicious from Gabriel Carrer & Reese Eveneshen, The Oak Room from Cody Calahan and Slaxx from Elza Kephart. Of all the many and varied action movie subgenres, my favorite is probably the no-nonsense, low-budget, direct-to-dvd action flick.
These movies are comforting, akin to cinematic junk food. They don't have to be good; they just have to deliver the goods. All that's really necessary are some gnarly fights and/or gunplay, a little skin and a few jokes from a reasonably attractive cast. If the filmmakers can provide these elements, wrapped in a story that moves briskly enough to prevent me from thinking about the inevitable plot holes, then I'm a happy man.
Sadly, with the passing of the golden age of the video store, as well as the rusty age of Lorenzo Lamas and Steven Seagal, this once ubiquitous type of movie is rapidly becoming scarce. But it's not entirely dead yet,...

When they refuse, the mafia unleashes a trio of assassins on them who use all of their power to bring the bounty hunters down and to get their man – dead or alive.
Bounty Hunters, aka Bail Enforcers, is one of those films that tries to capture the feeling of classic action movies of yesteryear – right down to including Jackie Chan style outtakes at...

Director/writer: Reese Eveneshen.
Cast: Emily Alatalo, Lionel Boodlal and Colin Paradine.
If there is ever a movie that requires viewers to keep a bottle of Advil nearby, Dead Genesis is it. The problem is with all the headache inducing camera-shaking going on. Has anyone in the production team heard of a tripod?
Shaky-cam is a style that some movie and television shows can pull off only when it adds to the drama. Sometimes, the jarring movement is soft and natural, and other times, it is like standing still while an earthquake is happening. But when such a movie is done with no thought towards keeping the camera steady at all, sometimes a vomit bag is required!
But when the principal cinematographer was replaced after a day, based on the triva written for this film on the IMDb, writer/director Reese Eveneshen was very bold to continue on and take on the job himself.

Reese Eveneshen is the director behind the recent zombie horror opus, Dead Genesis starring Emily Alatalo, Lionel Boodlal, Colin Paradine, Erin Stuart. This enterprising young filmmaker showed that with his debut feature film, that he was a competent filmmaker ready to take on a challenging sub-genre. Dead Genesis was technically sound, respectablly executed and it looked far better then other similarly low budget zombie fare on the market. Dead Genesis took on subject matter such as zombies as a metaphor on the war on terror, sexual relations between the undead and the living and statements on the human condition. We had the chance to ask Reese Eveneshen a few questions about his film. Here's what Reese had to say.
Who is Reese Eveneshen and what are you all about?
I'm like most film makers, our background is based in our bedrooms and living rooms watching hours upon hours of movies...

Dead Genesis PosterDead Genesis is a zombie flavoured film, which has been flying under the radar for some time now. The film has had a premiere back in April and now the film has a new promotional poster, which shows some of the characters for the film. The film's one-sheet shows a war between the living and the dead, but how easy would fighting shamblers, or slow moving zombies really be?
In the trailer below for the film, the age-old, Romero inspired zombies are used, which could only really capture a seventy year old woman and not anyone who could move faster than 2-3 km an hour. This argument has been made before. However, using shamblers to take over the land of the living is, simply, unbelievable. Take inspiration from Danny Boyle in 28 Days Later, or even Romero's later zombies in the Land of Dead who have intelligence and attack en masse for realism.
