The film features Manu Pillai and Sharanya R Nair in the lead roles and is directed by debutant Jacky S Kumar. From what we hear about the film, it will have no connection whatsoever with the Hindi film that was released with the same name in 2014. Directed by Abhishek Varman, the Bollywood film was based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel 2 States: The Story of My Marriage. Speaking about the film and the title particularly in an interview with the cinemaexpress, Jacky S Kumar said, “We used that title because it’s about a Tamil girl who enters the lives of a young Malayali man, his father, and grandfather. It’s about the events that follow the elopement of the young couple.

‘The Curse of the Weeping Woman’
New Line/DC Entertainment’s family superhero adventure Shazam! easily retained the top spot in its third weekend virtually by default.
One reason for the dreary Easter weekend trading: Distributors were unwilling to launch films for fear of being crushed by the Disney/Marvel juggernaut Avengers: End Game, which opens on Wednesday.
But an underlying factor is the generally lousy performance of Hollywood films this year. In the Us pundits described the Easter business as the worst since 2003. The Us box office for the year to date stands at $2.9 billion, down 16 per cent on 2018.
The only new wide release was the James Wan-produced horror pic The Curse of the Weeping Woman (aka The Curse of La Llorona), which opened at No. 1 in the Us but was a distant fifth here.

Before April 17, 2019, Kalank was the movie everybody was eager to watch, people where seen racing against time, schedules, appointments, family matters, etc. today after five days - not even a week of its release, people right from day one are busy making fun and expressing their sheer disappointment.
Some movies are good, some are bad enough to disappear instantly from your memory, some are so precious that they become part of your life, and some are like Kalank, so bad that it?s an eerie haunt that refuses to go and keeps asking what went wrong with this touted epic directed by 2 States fame Abhishek Varman and produced by Karan Johar, Sajid Nadiadwala and Fox Star Studios, starring Madhuri Dixit, Sonakshi Sinha, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sanjay Dutt and Kunal Kemmu.

It is true that India is the country that produces the largest number of films every year. Thousands of new titles in many languages pour into our screens every year. They include both big-budget films with major movie stars that have the backing of the biggest studios and production houses and also a growing and thriving independent cinema which produces many of the best movies every year.
There are films which manage to generate pre-release buzz and are highly anticipated by the movie going audience. The buzz could result from the involvement of major stars, a grand scale, subject matter that catches our fancy, an encouraging response to the trailer or in some cases, nationwide controversy.
The big event releases worldwide like “Avengers:Endgame” or the final season of “Game of Thrones” have seen unparalleled excitement from fans and it will be the same in India. However, this article will restrict itself to Indian movies.

Kalank has unfortunately turned into an ?epic? disappointment, the author feels that if the story of Kalank - the mega budget multi star period drama helmed by the 2 States fame Abhishek Varman that boasted names like Madhuri Dixit, Sonakshi Sinha, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sanjay Dutt and Kunal Kemmu would have been the way re imagined, retold over here by taking liberties after watching the original in theatres, things could have been different.
Here goes the re-imagined Kalank
Opening scene
A dying Satya (Sonakshi Sinha) makes her last wish and asks her younger sister Roop (Alia Bhatt) to marry her husband Dev (Aditya Roy Kapur), (keep reading for more) the period is the same 1945 and it?s Lahore in Pakistan.

Karan Johar's multi-starrer, mega-budget Kalank may have registered 2019's biggest opening day collection by garnering Rs 21.60 crore, but viewers took to the social media with a sea of memes taking on the film. "Bollywood is improving day by day now they are telling us the review of movie in title itself. First Zero and now Kalank," wrote one user. The film's songs were also used to comment on the film, directed by Abhishek Varman.
"Audience while going to watch Kalank - 'Baaki sab first class hai'. Audience after watching Kalank: 'Sab ka sab third class hai'," wrote one user.
Another wrote: "Audience after watching Kalank. Tabah ho gaye."
Comparisons have been made of the scale and vibe of the film with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's brand of cinema.
But in one Twitter review, a user wrote: "When Karan Johar wants to become Sanjay Leela Bhansali, outcome is disaster."

Abhishek Varman spares no expense in this tale of forbidden love – but heavenly visuals are marred by clunky storytelling
With the oddly titled Kalank (Blemish), we find Bollywood in something of a pickle. Since the runaway global success of the two-part Telugu epic Baahubali, Indian producers have followed a bigger-is-better credo, drumming up a succession of thunderous historical throwbacks such as Manikarnika, which summoned multitudes of extras but precious little poetry or wonder.
Audiences have started to gravitate instead towards more personal stories and pithier genre fare, such as surprise-pregnancy comedy Badhaai Ho and horror Stree.

Events leading to the 1947 Partition of India serve as the forebodingly serious backdrop for the exhaustingly overextended razzmatazz of “Kalank,” writer-director Abhishek Varman’s lavish but ponderous Bollywood extravaganza, which opened in the U.S. on more than 300 screens the same day as its Indian release. Despite the preponderance of sets and costumes spectacular enough to make Baz Luhrmann weep with envy, and a handful of thrillingly choreographed production numbers that sporadically quicken the movie’s pulse and boost its eye-candy quotient, the attractive yet underwhelming lead players are too hampered by the lethargic narrative to sufficiently distract viewers from their awareness of time passing and interest diminishing.

Kalank
Starring Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sonakshi Sinha

After I finished watching this long winding but ultimately satisfying tale of unfulfilled love, the incandescent Alia Bhatt asked me if I enjoyed the film.
No, I didn’t enjoy Kalank. But I still liked it. Liked it a lot. For its inner and outer beauty. Kalank is gorgeous, no, make that drop-dead gorgeous. Every frame is worked out to an eye-catching detail exuding a kind arrested aestheticism that implies a penchant for opulence and majesty that has no parallel in real life.
And certainly not in 1946 when the film’s tumultuous romance unravels (not as seamlessly as one would imagine). The sets and the imaginative use of religious symbols in the songs are breathtaking. And put Alia Bhatt in a gondola sailing through this universe caught in the cusp of never-land,...

When you think about the choreographers in Hindi films several names come to mind and one of them of course is the great Remo D’Souza. In every dance sequence he choreographs and directs he always works to create something cool, something new and something classic. He is considered one of the best in the industry and fans cannot wait to see what he will bring to the big screen.
His next film is actually one he says he is the most excited about. We are talking about Kalank, the Abhishek Varman directed film, which is set in 1945, in pre-independent India. Kalank is the story of a vivid and ethereal world, lost when the fire of Partition engulfs the city and the country. It’s the story of the shades of reds in their lives as they yearn for hues of love while Husnabad gets soaked in the reds of violence and revenge.

One of the most-anticipated films of the year, Kalank, the saga of love set in 1940s, has been in the news ever since its announcement. Helmed by Abhishek Varman, the film is close to Karan Johar?s heart, as it was his father, producer Yash Johar?s last project that he conceptualised 15 years ago. Karan wanted to direct the film himself following the release of Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), but unfortunately, it got pushed to the back burner.
He shared a still from the movie on social media and penned his thoughts on how special the film is to him, describing the epic drama as a story of turbulent relationships and eternal love. As the film is nearing its release, Karan is filled with mixed emotions. He is excited, anxious and emotional that his father?s wish has found a relationship with the celluloid.
