First published in 1881, Swiss author Johanna Spyri’s novel Heidi is one of the best-selling books ever written. As Wikipedia explains, the story follows “a joyful and free-spirited young girl who is orphaned as a toddler” as she develops a friendship with a girl named Klara, who is unable to walk. More than 140 years later, the Swiss icon Heidi has been reimagined as Mad Heidi for an over-the-top action-adventure horror comedy. The film (read our review Here) received a one-night theatrical release in the United States and Canada last week, but if you missed out on that, you still won’t have to wait much longer to see the movie. Raven Banner Releasing and Swissploitation Films are teaming up to bring Mad Heidi to Blu-ray, digital HD, and cable VOD in North America on July 21st!

Exclusive: CAA has signed Gabriel Labelle, the actor who recently landed a breakout role in Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, for representation.
In the film loosely based on Spielberg’s childhood in Arizona, the 19-year-old will play Sammy Fabelman, a young, aspiring filmmaker modeled after the three-time Oscar winner. He’ll star alongside Michelle Williams (who plays a character inspired by Spielberg’s mother), Seth Rogen (who plays a version of his favorite uncle), Paul Dano (who plays a version of his father) and more. Spielberg and Tony Kushner scripted the film, and produced it alongside Kristie Macosko Krieger. It’s slated for release in theaters on November 23rd.

Even the supernatural can get the heebie-jeebies, as evidenced in Peter Ricq's new illustrated book Ghosts Are People Too. To celebrate the launch of the book's official Kickstarter campaign, we've been provided with an exclusive excerpt that shows how even the supernatural can get a case of the heebie-jeebies when around the living.
To give you an idea of what to expect in Ghosts Are People Too, here are exclusive comments from Ricq:
I wanted to do something with a positive message and yet still keep that playful fascination with the paranormal, an obsession I've had from a very young age.
The books that inspired the look of Ghosts Are People Too were mostly the images from an old french book called "Les Chefs-d'oeuvre De L'epovante" and the English classic "Gashlycrumb Tinies" from Edward Goey's.
Crowdfunding/self-publishing is important to me because so I can keep full control. The art,...

With Halloween around the corner, there’s no better time to remember that it’s not easy being dead — a message underscored by Ghosts Are People Too, a new illustrated book from writer, illustrator and filmmaker Peter Ricq that launches its crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter today.
The 40-page book tells the story of Ethan Alby, a young ghost who also gets scared of things — including his feelings for a particular living girl who’s taken up residence in the house he haunts, even though she doesn’t knows he exists.

If your neighbor had a living dead secret, you would have to worry about being eaten by the Joneses, let alone keeping up with them. Three kids have to gear up to face a zombified threat next door in the Canadian horror comedy Dead Shack (read our own Patrick Bromley's Cineapocalypse review here), which is now streaming on Shudder, and we've been provided with two images to share with Daily Dead readers.
Directed by Peter Ricq, Dead Shack stars Cameron Andres, Lizzie Boys, and Hannah Rochelle Burr. You can gear up for a zombie encounter in the images below, and visit Shudder in the Us for more information.
Synopsis: "While staying at a run-down cabin in the woods during the weekend, three children must save their parents from the neighbor who intends to feed them to her undead family. Featuring first-rate comedy, carnage and first-rate practical effects, Dead Shack is a must-see.

Following an extensive festival run, Peter Ricq's zombie comedy Dead Shack has hit Canadian theaters and VOD and with the release comes a brand new - and very squishy - trailer. For those unfamiliar, the story here revolves around a trio of teens on a weekend away who discover that their neighbor - played by Lauren Holly - is preying upon the locals to feed them to her zombie family. This would be the point where the responsible adults should step in to help but in this case all of the available adults are supremely irresponsible - and very drunk - so the kids have to deal with it themselves. Check it out below!...

Sometimes, charm is enough to get a movie across the finish line. It may not all work, the whole may be less than the sum of the parts, but if there’s enough charm to it all, we audiences will tend to overlook some of the more obvious issues and give ourselves over to a film. We like to be charmed.
Dead Shack, the Canadian horror comedy directed by Peter Ricq, is a charming movie. The pieces don’t always fit, the jokes sometimes miss their mark, the horror elements can be clumsy, but the film holds together on the basis of charm. This is a likable movie with a likable cast, and by 2017 the zombie comedy is as breezy and recognizable a genre as the standard rom-com. Because I demand little from these movies, it’s easier for them to surprise me. I don’t know that I would call Dead Shack “surprising,...

Living in Chicago, I spend much of my year being jealous of all the people I see online going to the various genre film festivals held around the parts of the country that aren’t here… until now.
For the first time ever, Chicago is getting its very own full-blown genre festival with Cinepocalypse, a week-long event running November 2nd–9th at the Music Box Theatre, the best place to see a movie in the entire city. Formerly the Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival (which I have attended since it began and always completely loved), Cinepocalypse now has a new venue, a larger and more ambitious slate of programming, and dozens of special guests. It’s going to be bigger and better than any festival of its kind the city has ever seen, and I can’t wait to be there as much as possible to see as many cool movies as possible.

There are a few Canadian titles in the mix this year; Chad Archibald's The Heretics, Lowell Dean's Another Wolfcop, Peter Ricq's Dead Shack, and Leo Scherman's Trench 11. This is a decent zombie horror-comedy from multitalented director Peter Ricq. While on vacation, three kids discover a nearby neighbor is harboring her undead family who need to be fed, and they have to save their unsuspecting parental guardians. It’s kind of a tourist trap led up by Lauren Holly as the neighbor. There’s some good humor from the father Roger (Donavon Stinson) who’s got good timing even if those around him don’t. He was the highlight for me, while the kids were all decent as well.
This is a fun little zombie flick, offering up cute comedy and decent gore effects, but it doesn’t bring anything new to the table. The biggest problem for me was a tonal shift; what’s relatively lighthearted for 90% of the movie is heavily marred by a shockingly grim finale. Worth a look for fans of the genre,...

For fans of chuckle-happy zombie schlock, I present to you Peter Ricq’s Dead Shack, a scrappy Sam-Raimi-esque vision birthed from cabin-in-the-woods campfire stories. Laughs are bloody and sentiments family-driven, but one of the more impressive aspects is a low-budget production that masks shoestring restraints (“shoestring” being relative). Gore effects are squeamish and pulpy, unblemished by budgetary […]

The 150 plus guest-list this year is as vibrant and eclectic as ever, with nearly 40 of the films represented… New to the film line-up is Jackals, Kevin Greutert’s potent blend of horror thriller, home invasion terror and murder cult chiller, which stars Stephen Dorff and Deborah Kara Unger. I like when a director knows what he/she wants from his/her film — even if the goal is to entertain on a level that ensures its legacy falls short of cinematic greatness. Some of my favorite movies are those that demand to be re-watched not for comprehension’s sake or to acknowledge metaphor underneath formal expertise, but because they’re fun. Horror/comedy is ripe for delivering exactly that result with its ability for work to simultaneously excel as an example of the genre’s common tropes and a subversion of them. Director Peter Ricq knows this and decides to lay everything on the line with cowriters Phil Ivanusic and Davila LeBlanc in Dead Shack. They clearly separate good and evil, letting each loose within a contained setting to battle to the death.
So they start things off with a rousing prologue playing with the zombie motif as lark before revealing it as truth.

Next stop on the Dead Shack tour this Summer is at the Fantasia International Film Festival. The Canadian zom-com will screen during the afternoon of July 22nd and if this fresh teaser trailer is anything to go by the crowd in Montreal is going to love Peter Ricq's movie. There is plenty of evidence throughout that Dead Shack is going to be a gory affair then the punchline at the end is pretty good. As word spreads on this film it should gain some traction on the festival circuit through to the Fall I think. On a weekend getaway at a rundown cottage in the woods, a precautious 14 year-old teen, his crude best friend, and his best friend's fearless older sister will...
