Steel yourselves for something saucy because a series adaptation of the May Cobb novel, The Hunting Wives, is coming to Starz. The network gave the project an eight-episode order, with Hightown creator Rebecca Cutter writing, executive producing, and showrunning the adaptation with 3 Arts Entertainment’s Erwin Stoff. The Hunting Wives is the first new series coming to Starz since the end of the WGA strike last week. The network recently canceled shows, including Heels, Run the World, and Blindspotting, much to the dismay of fans.
Here’s the synopsis for Cobb’s novel via Amazon:
Sophie O’Neill left behind an envy-inspiring career and the stressful, competitive life of big-city Chicago to settle down with her husband and young son in a small Texas town. It seems like the perfect life with a beautiful home in an idyllic rural community. But Sophie soon realizes that life is now too quiet,...

Starz, fresh off axing four of its scripted originals, is replenishing its roster.
The Lionsgate-backed premium cable network has handed out an eight-episode series order to The Hunting Wives, a thriller based on May Cobb’s book of the same name.
Hightown’s Rebecca Cutter will serve as showrunner on Hunting, which follows Sophie O’Neil and her family’s move from the East Coast to deep red East Texas, where she succumbs to socialite Margo Banks’ charms and finds her life consumed by obsession, seduction and murder.
Erwin Stoff (The Serpent Queen) will exec produce the series alongside Cutter. The series is produced by Lionsgate and 3 Arts Entertainment.
“The Hunting Wives is a juicy, suspenseful and sultry thrill-ride,” said Kathryn Busby, president of original programming at Starz. “We’re excited to continue to work with Rebecca and Erwin on this propulsive series that perfectly complements Starz’s slate of edgy,...

This marks Starz’s first new series pickup since the end of the writers strike. Last week, the network canceled sophomore shows Heels, Run The World and Blindspotting and opted not to move forward with The Venery of Samantha Bird which had paused production in May due to the strike with two episodes left to film. The Hunting Wives joins another female-centered upcoming series Starz has in the wings, Three Women, as the network is tweaking its programming slate built around the hit Power and Outlander franchises.

The Breach, not to be confused with Breach, is the second feature from Rue Morgue founding editor Rodrigo Gudiño (The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh). Co-written by Nick Cutter and Ian Weir based on Cutter’s novel, its mix of haunted house and mad scientist themes attracted a lot of pre-release buzz which I was hoping it would live up to.
John Hawkins has one week left as sheriff of Lone Crow. Then he can put the town, and his ex Meg, behind him and start a new job in the city. That, of course, means something terrible has to happen before he can leave. And it does when a canoe bearing the mutilated remains of theoretical physicist Cole Parsons washes up at a local park.

There are good actors with bad scripts and then there are horrible actors with even worse scripts. More than half of the cast in Aaron Strey’s atrocious ‘horror’ movie The Wraith Within fall in the latter section. The only actor who seems moderately capable of delivering the horrendously bad lines is “Species” veteran Michael Madsen, although it seems the better days of his career are ancient history. Overweight and sickly, Madsen tries his best on a minuscule budget, and terrible direction, while his cast members try outperforming each other in who can be the worse actor in this Dollar Tree Evil Dead flick. This is one such movie that we can’t even recommend for a C-list marathon with your friends, and this is one dumpster fire you should avoid. Go through the breakdown of this sordid excuse for a horror film and decide why The Wraith Within is best skipped.

Jeff Cutter and Dan Trachtenberg are no strangers to taking residence within larger franchises. The director of photography and director, respectively, have collaborated on feature films set in both the worlds of “Predator” and “Cloverfield” — and delivered best-of entrants along the way.
And both offered unique challenges, too: For Hulu’s “Prey,” the trim, exciting “Predator” prequel from 2022, the duo took advantage of the great outdoors in a massive scope. While their 2016 film “10 Cloverfield Lane” relied on a virtually all-interior pressure cooker set in a John Goodman-run bunker.

“We were probably 95% location,” Cutter said of shooting “Prey,” noting that they “only had three or four stage days where we used stages for campfire scenes.“ He and Trachtenberg shot the prequel with anamorphic lenses over nearly 60 days in Calgary, drumming up the latest project featuring the time-traveling Predator (played here...

“Prey” director Dan Trachtenberg wanted his “Predator” spinoff, which is set in 1719, to be shot in a naturalistic way, so cinematographer Jeff Cutter made use of available light whenever possible — especially from fire and the moon.

In the movie, Comanche warrior Naru (Amber Midthunder) tracks and hunts down a killer alien through the woods. “I would use fire as much as possible and augment it if we had to,” says Cutter.
A few scenes were entirely lit by fire torches, with no supplemental lighting. For those moments, the Dp would advise Midthunder and other actors how to hold the torch without disrupting their performances.
Throughout, Cutter wanted the moonlight to be a presence. “That was important to me because we were going...

Season 2 of Nic Pizzolatto's HBO series "True Detective" was a frustratingly disjointed affair. It played like the first draft of a James Ellroy L.A. noir: it was emotionally overheated and graphically violent, but the inciting incident and ensuing intrigue never caught fire. The quintet of compromised main characters, who worked in different Los Angeles law enforcement agencies, were fascinating in their own right (save for Taylor Kitsch's overmatched California Highway Patrol officer), but the stakes were strangely un-engaging. Imagine "Chinatown" with Perry Lopez' Lieutenant Lou Escobar getting a full arc to give more oxygen to the Hollis Mulwray investigation from the LAPD's perspective, and that's this season of "True Detective" in a nutshell.
Season 2 was a rough sit, but it had its pleasures. The narrative never locked into place, but the actors punched their weight. Colin Farrell clawed his way through the scarred skin of...
