A master manipulator, Freegard kidnapped countless victims, convincing them he was undercover MI5. A tale of lies, loyalty, gaslighting, fear, hope, and the investigation and high-stakes manhunt, which saved the life of Freegard’s final victim.
Patterson and Lawn co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Bronner (The Mauritanian) based on the article Chasing Agent Freegard by Bronner. The pic also stars Shazad Latif (Star Trek Discovery), Marisa Abela (Industry), Edwina Findley (The Wire), Sarah Goldberg (The Dark Knight Rises), Jimmy Akingbola (Ted Lasso), and Julian Barratt (The Mighty...

The U.S. movie business is undergoing a wave of dramatic consolidation.
Major studios are being swallowed up and indie players are dropping like flies. Though the Cannes Film Festival is unfolding an ocean and several time zones away from Hollywood, the aftershocks from the mega-mergers and bankruptcies currently roiling the entertainment industries will likely be felt by the executives and agents prowling the Croisette in search of movies to buy.
“There aren’t a lot of U.S. distributors, period,” said Martin Moszkowicz, CEO of Constantin Film, the producer of “Resident Evil.”
Twentieth Century Fox Film has been subsumed into Walt Disney Studios as part of a larger $71.3 billion deal. Under its new ownership, it is expected to release fewer than six movies annually, roughly half of what it once fielded in a typical year. That means that the number of major studios have shrunk from six to five.

Seeing worldwide sales sell-outs on “355” and “Ironbark,” from FilmNation, and Studiocanal’s “The Secret Garden,” the 2018 Cannes Film Festival proved the second big market in a row to buck, although only in part, longer-term pessimism.
After glacial-paced early trading, titles sold from Cannes first weekend both to the U.S. and abroad at a steady, though never spectacular, rate.
But if Cannes, like February’s surprisingly buoyant Berlin, suggested there is still life in the international independent film business, despite a tepid Sundance and dire American Film Market, it also delivered a sobering snapshot of new market realities.
Whichever way the 2018 Cannes Film Market is taken, heartening signs of continued market traction have to be placed in a context of a longer-term attrition in the independent theatrical market affecting both many mid-sized English-language movies and arthouse titles alike. The bottom hasn’t fallen out of either market. But their theatrical space,...

Bringing one of the biggest new independent animation projects onto the Cannes market, London-based Anton is lead-financing and handling world sales on “Fireheart,” produced by Main Journey’s Laurent Zeitoun and Yann Zenou.

eOne Features is to close its London-based international film sales operation as the Canadian company shifts further towards production and distribution.
ScreenDaily has learned that up to 15 staff at the international sales division could be impacted and the team will not attend the Efm in Berlin next month.

Just about one year from his initial start date with the company — and just a few weeks ahead of Berlin — Entertainment One Films International President, Harold van Lier, is leaving. Formerly Studiocanal Evp of International Distribution, Van Lier joined eOne with much fanfare in January of 2014 and was armed with a $100M acquisitions fund. Now, eOne is consolidating its international sales operation within its film production business as it looks to focus on internally produced films. The company said today that Van Lier had decided to leave “as a result of the consolidation.”
Two years after its acquisition of Alliance, Canadian giant eOne continues to make changes within its film division. This latest move follows a September rejigger of the global film business which led to the exit of Patrice Théroux, and the entry of Steve Bertram as President, Global Film Group.

Afm 2014 has seen steady business on a number of indie packages, many of which came together at the eleventh hour, with plenty more business on the horizon.
However, market buzz has been dominated by a few must-have titles and a number of buyers have been left frustrated by the dearth of mid-range propositions.
One acquisitions veteran told Screen: “It has been slow with little great stuff but when there is a great film buyers will pay for it provided the economics aren’t crazy.”
Among in-demand titles have been Bloom’s The Nice Guys, with Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe and thriller Unlocked, FilmNation’s as-yet-untitled Woody Allen film, The Exchange’s Michael, Sierra/Affinity’s The Godmother, Lotus’ Replicas and The Crucifixion and Im Global’s The Secret in Their Eyes remake.

A decade ago, when the Afm forged in to replace Mifed in November, it was a bastion of B-movies with B-List stars hawking themselves in multiple films, and a slew of deals that often didn’t result in anything. Now, with studios only wanting to finance sequels and superhero movies, and requiring partners to fully fund or partly pay for everything else on their slates, indie companies have new currency and are dealing with some of the biggest films in the business, with everyone from Gary Ross (The Free State Of Jones) to Quentin Tarantino (The Hateful 8) in Santa Monica courting foreign buyers.
As it sheds the schlockfest stigma the Afm once bore, attendees are focused on the increased importance of offshore returns and a more disciplined approach to the business. There’s a lot of money in the market, but rigor is key while packaging has become tougher as...

eOne and Hammer have agreed to an exclusive multi-year first-look film deal.
The arrangement covers production, financing and distribution. London-based president of film production Xavier Marchand will oversee the deal for eOne.
eOne will distribute Hammer films in Canada, the UK, Benelux, Spain and Australia and New Zealand.

An iconic brand, London-based Hammer has had a resurgence over the past few years beginning with smash horror pic The Woman In Black in 2012. Expanding on a relationship that started with that film — via Alliance — and carried over to its upcoming sequel, Hammer and eOne have inked an exclusive multi-year first-look agreement, which includes production, financing and distribution. Under the pact, eOne will distribute Hammer films in Canada, the UK, Benelux, Spain and Australia/New Zealand. EOne Films International will handle the rest of the overseas territories. (Hammer films were previously sold by the now-defunct Exclusive.) EOne has been expanding its production business this year with Xavier Marchand as President of production and Harold van Lier heading up international. The company has also been going slightly more mainstream in offshore markets. Hammer’s other recent credits include Matt Reeves’ Let Me In and The Quiet Ones with Sam Claflin.
