Giusepe Tornatore’s “Malena” was a rather influential film, whose impact still sends ripples across movie industries all over the world. Sushrut Jain, twenty years later, presents the same two concepts, of a young kid growing up and the place of (particularly single) women in society in the modern, but still rather conservative, setting of a Mumbai suburb.
“The Tenant” is screening at Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles
13-year-old Bharat is struggling with adolescence in a patriarchal Mumbai suburb. His parents’ marriage is in crisis; the building bully constantly torments him for being too girly and for attending a high-class, English-speaking school; and his only friend is a childish 11-year-old, who gets even more bullied than he does. Meera, a beautiful cosmopolitan woman from the big city, moves in next door and immediately causes a stir. Bharat is drawn to her and they pursue an unlikely friendship. When Meera introduces him to soul music,...

Anand Gandhi’s debut feature “Ship of Theseus” is undoubtedly one of the finest Indian films of the last decade. It marked a significant shift in the perception of cinema in the country and was met with widespread critical acclaim at foreign film festivals. Gandhi’s magnum opus was awarded the National Film Award for Best Feature along with several other prestigious international accolades.
Although “Ship of Theseus” is a fascinating examination of contemporary Indian society, its grand vision is supported by a construct that is mythological in nature. Gandhi takes the eponymous paradox from Ancient Greece and transforms it into an inquiry of personal identity and post-humanism. The paradox famously asked whether a ship would remain the same if all its individual parts were replaced, begging the inevitable question: are we the sum of all our parts or is there something more to it?

Combining a traditional whodunit basis with a genre mash up that includes thriller, drama, noir, and comedy is not an easy task, but is exactly what Honey Trehan attempted with “Raat Akeli Hai”. Let us see if he succeeded.
After a flashback of a murder that took place five years before the main story, the film turns to the present, where Inspector Jatil Yadan, a small-town officer who still lives with his mother and is pressured by everyone around him to get married, is tasked with investigating a high-profile member of a rich aristocrat named Raghuveer Singh. Jatil arrives in the manor, only to find that the man was murdered with his own weapon during his wedding night, and that none of the inhabitants of the house seems to know or have heard anything.

NBCUniversal has debuted what it says is “the next step in the future of measurement:” Total Investment Impact, a way to measure the effectiveness of spending across campaigns, screens and platforms.
Kavita Vazirani, EVP of Insights & Measurements, and Pankaj Kumar, SVP of Advertising Impact, outlined the new offering in a blog post Thursday. Honda is participating in the beta launch.
“The real value of Total Investment Impact lies within its continuous learning model,” Vazirani and Kumar wrote. “Once put into motion for an advertiser, the results from each NBCU campaign are used to build outcome-driven plans based on the latest model results. This perpetual learning and optimization method allows clients to make every marketing dollar go further, and attain higher Roi across the board.”

Raat Akeli Hai (Netflix)
Starring: Nawazuddin Siddiqui,Radhika Apte,Shweta Tripathi,Tigmanshu Dhulia,Shivani Raghuvanshi
Directed by Honey Trehan
A death in the family kills a lot of hopes and expectations built around the life of the person who is no more.
…Or less. Raat Akeli Hai, a skillfully scripted whodunit that is much more than just a murder mystery, opens with two deaths, both connected to the same family. The patriarchal nightmare of the Singh parivar, a feudal kingdom where kinks and whims rule, where the men decide the quality of the air women should breathe, is brought to life in flickering colours of dark furtive suppressed emotions.
Straightaway we must applaud Pankaj Kumar’s cinematography. A lot of the intended incandescence of seething hearts is lost on the Ott platform. What remains is still remarkable. First-time director Honey Trehan creates a dark sinister self-contained universe of painful gender...

The Noida double murder case refers to the unsolved murders of 13-year-old girl Aarushi Talwar and 45-year-old Hemraj Banjade, a male live-in domestic worker employed by her family. The two were killed on the night of 15–16 May 2008 at Aarushi’s home in Noida, India. The case aroused public interest as a whodunit story, and received heavy media coverage. The sensational media coverage, which included salacious allegations against Aarushi and the suspects, was criticized by many as a trial by media. In November 2013, the parents were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, but many critics argued that the judgment was based on weak evidence. The Talwars challenged the decision in the Allahabad High Court. On 12 October 2017, the court acquitted them, calling the evidence against them unsatisfactory and severely criticising the police, Cbi and the media for not having investigated the murder properly. On 8 March 2018, the Cbi has challenged the acquittal in Supreme Court.

Having in mind both India’s rich mythological heritage and the state of development of the country’s cinema, it is quite strange that the top-quality horror-fantasy works rarely come from the world’s second most populous country. However the trend can shift quickly since “Tumbbad” is one of the best and most efficient horror films seen in years. The critical response is good, the world premiere as the opening film of the last year’s edition of Venice Critics Week opened the possibilities for a long festival tour and the film was already released theatrically in India.

Tumbbad
Starring Sohum Shah, Mohd Samad
Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, Anand Gandhi
What on earth is this? This….this….magnificent creature masquerading as a movie haunts your senses for long after the closing images of raging destruction in the stunning finale
Little wonder that the incredible Anand Gandhi who created—no, I won’t use the mundane word ‘made’— the astonishing The Ship Of Theseus, is closely associated with Tumbbad. The visual imagery of this film is incomparable. Perhaps Sanjay Leela Bhansali on a particularly anxious night, would think up the visual language of Tumbbad. Raging and divine, Tumbbad looks like a universe that God created and forgot to put on the human map.
Feverish and fertile, this is a work of luminous lunacy. A parable on greed, lust and lustful greed this magical mystical film weaves layer after layer of drama based on illusion, subterfuge and self-delusion.

Ask any actor of some worth. It is not easy to play a known living character. Audiences and the character that you are playing, plus their close associates, judge the performance with scrutinized harshness and normally find it wanting.
Not this time. Not Arun Gawli. Not Arjun Rampal who has shaped into one of Hindi cinema’s most dependable actors who does his roles with such smooth efficiency and such noiseless excellence that we are liable to miss the point.
Don’t make the mistake of confusing Arjun’s laidback wisdom in portraying the gangster-philanthropist-parliamentarian-convict Arun Gawle, as a Devganesque laziness. This is a power-packed implosive performance. Rampal plays Gawli as a time bomb waiting to explode. There are no extra toppings, fringe benefits, perks or bonuses to this performance.

In the life that is created in Vishal Bhardwaj’s art the characters are so flawed and fractured and so driven down to destruction by their own demoniacal desires that you fear they would collapse under the weight of their own ambitions and longings.
This is true as much of the characters as the director himself. Vishal Bhardwaj’s latest arguably his most ambitious film to date could have ended up being the Bombay Velvet/Mohenjo Daro of 2017. It is rescued, no redeemed, by an excruciatingly exquisite perception of the wounds and lashes that love pelts down on those who are its victims.

Ghost Ship: Gandhi’s Debut an Enjoyably Philosophical Triptych
Finally seeing a release after its 2012 premiere, Anand Gandhi’s directorial debut, Ship of Theseus is an engaging philosophical exploration of, among many things, the meaning of life and discernable identity. Hardly as weighty or sententious as that sounds on paper, the film belongs to a growing cluster of recent independent offerings from India that exist far away from the realm of Bollywood, a fact that may conflate a struggle to find an audience. While a running time of nearly two and half hours may seem equally daunting, Gandhi, who also wrote the script, has created an intelligent, three pronged portrait of life in modern day Mumbai that neither taps into doldrums or dramatics. While it sometimes feels a bit heavy-handed, certain lengthy passages of dialogue and a uniting finale are two areas that may grate, it’s a grandly...

It’s not unusual for great artists to ponder over the purpose of art and life and come up with artistic creations that deal with these questions. Be it Andrei Tarkovsky, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Mrinal Sen or Guru Dutt, they have all felt the need to address these questions in their work at some point in their distinguished careers. Anand Gandhi is different; he begins his feature career with these questions.
Ship of Theseus stands out among the recent crop of Indian indie films for both its concerns and rich cinematic expressions. This is a highly accomplished film that bedazzles both at the level of idea and execution.
Gandhi makes his intentions clear right in the beginning. Ship of Theseus opens with a shot of an eye blinking to light. Gandhi wants to open our eyes to the brave new world that he portrays. A world that demands a different sensibility to appreciate it.

Ship of Theseus is the first feature film from director Anand Gandhi, and, as its title suggests, it explores the philosophical concept of the paradox of Theseus. As described by the Greek philosopher Plutarch, the paradox is this: if an object has any or all of its parts replaced, does it remain the same object?
The film, then, traces the stories of three individuals, all of whom are affected by this conundrum. Each of them must deal with the change that is wrought in their lives and in themselves either after an organ transplant (in the case of the photographer Aliya and the stockbroker Nivan), or before it (the monk Maitreya).
Aliya (Aida Elkashef) is blind as a result of a corneal infection. Despite this, she works as a photographer, relying on her intuition to fuel her creative output. In addition, she has developed a way of working with her...

No other recent Indian film has received so much acclaim for its cinematography as “Ship of Theseus”. The film won technical excellence awards at Mumbai and Tokyo film festivals and the award for best cinematography at Transilvania Film Festival. The awards have taken cinematographer Pankaj Kumar by surprise whose idea was “to keep the cinematography completely invisible”!
Pankaj Kumar, who graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India (Ftii) in 2004, comes across as a passionate, unassuming and highly articulate person. During his school days, he chanced upon Tarkovsky’s “Mirror” and “Andrei Rublev” on Doordarshan. The poetic imagery of the master left him eternally inspired to seek a career in cinema.

I n 2012–the year Indian cinema turned 100–it showed renewed vigour and youthfulness as if it were being reborn. A new generation of young and restless filmmakers, who caught attention of festival programmers worldwide, rewrote the rules of not only mainstream cinema but also challenged what Indians traditionally believed an “alternative film” or at times labeled as “art film” stood for.
We use the term ‘independent’ to denote the attitude rather than the economic mode of production. That’s why films that are backed by major studios and the government as well as films which have been funded in completely non-traditional ways co-exist in our list.
Any such list can’t claim to be authoritative and scientific; however, what we claim is that our listing isn’t arbitrary. We took into consideration factors such as selection at A-list festivals, popularity among festivals in general, awards, jury mentions, international reviews, international distribution and domestic release.

Still from Ship of Theseus
Pankaj Kumar won the Award for Best Artistic Contribution for his contribution as the cinematographer of Ship of Theseus at Tokyo International Film Festival that concluded yesterday.

Ship of Theseus is Kumar’s first feature film as a cinematographer. He has worked for five short films earlier namely: Manjha, Solitary Sandpiper, Notes on Her and Aditi Singh. He studied Cinematography at the Film and Television Institute of India (Ftii), Pune.
“Shooting digitally on a modest budget, Gandhi and cinematographer Pankaj Kumar, who uses a desaturated palette studded with occasional flashes of breath-taking visual poetry, give us a sense of the great city as an entity unto itself, further blurring the line between individual and environment,” The Hollywood reporter commented on Ship of Theseus.

Ship of Theseus
Anand Gandhi’s highly anticipated film Ship Of Theseus premieres in India at the Mumbai Film Festival on October 24. The film recently won a Special Mention by the Sutherland Award Jury at 56th BFI London Film Festival and is screening at the ongoing Tokyo Film Festival. It had its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last month. Anand Gandhi talks about his debut feature here:
What is Ship of Theseus about?
Ship of Theseus is a philosophical paradox of identity and change. As the planks of Theseus’ ship needed repair, it was replaced part-by-part, up to a point where not a single part from the original ship remained in it, anymore. Is it, then, still the same ship? My film probes this question in a metaphorical sense. “How do we know where we end and our environment begins,” wonders one of the characters in the film.
