Oscar contender Yellow
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the lists of short films advancing to the next stage of Oscar contention. This is the final stage before the nominations themselves are announced on 23 January.
"It is a huge privilege to be shortlisted for the 96th Academy Awards," said Elham Ehsas, director of Yellow. "I hope this is one step closer to giving a voice to all the girls and women in Afghanistan who have had no access to an education for the past two years and counting. This film is for them. They will not be forgotten."
"My perception of the world is being reshaped with this surreal experience," said An Avocado Pit's Ary Zara. "What I considered impossible is now a tangible achievement, one I never dared to dream of. I embrace the disbelief and profound gratitude that accompany this remarkable milestone. The purpose of.

The wearing of the chadari is an age-old tradition in Afghanistan, claims the man on the news. It is a part of Afghan culture. It’s only natural that that Taliban, for whom he speaks, should want to restore it. The entrance to the shop where Laili (Afsaneh Dehrouyeh) goes to buy her first chadari, now that they are mandated by law, is surrounded by bright colours. Silk scarves flutter; vibrant patterns catch the eye. A yellow canary sings inside a cage. Stepping into the shop, she is confronted by a rack of identical-looking blue chadaris. The camera lingers on them for a fraction too long, forcing viewers to share her discomfort, the sense that the promise of this place has been stolen.
The strains of a rubab call her – and our – attention to the back room. It’s a traditional melody, now – as the shopkeeper (played by director Elham Ehsas...

Elham Ehsas in Yellow
It’s a bright, sunny day when I speak with Elham Ehsas. He’s relaxing outside in the centre of London, four and a half thousand miles from where he was born, but Afghanistan is still very much in his heart. He’s recently directed and starred in a short film, Yellow, which depicts an encounter between a Talib shopkeeper and a young woman who has come in to buy her first, now obligatory, chadari, the garment without which she will no longer be allowed to go outside. At the time of publication, it has just screened at the Palm Springs Short Film Festival, one of the most prestigious short film showcases in the world, and it’s heading for London as part of Refugee Week. Elham and I begin our conversation by talking about his own experience of leaving Afghanistan and growing up in the UK.

Just prior to the season finale episode, which will be released tonight on AppleTV+, the show Shantaram starring Charlie Hunnam has been axed by the streaming service. Stantaram is based on the lengthy 900-plus page novel by Gregory David Roberts and had a huge production with the ambitious, epic scope of shooting across two continents. Both of which had been impacted by the Covid pandemic.
The series started filming its first season, but production came to a pause in February 2020 when the pandemic was taking shape. Since the show filmed in multiple countries, production was not able to resume until May 2021 for the remaining ten episodes of the season. Deadline reports that the show hadn’t quite taken off as much as the streaming service’s more popular titles, such as The Morning Show and Ted Lasso.

Charlie Hunnam's return to the Sons of Anarchy universe might happen sooner than you think.
Deadline reported this week that the star's TV comeback vehicle, Shantaram, has been canceled after just one season.
The cancellation comes just ahead of its first season finale.
No reason for the cancellation has been given, but the show hasn't reached the level of success as some of its Apple TV+ counterparts.
Many of the streaming services still keep viewership statistics under wraps, and the expansive nature of Shantaram certainly makes us think it was an expensive series to produce.
The show is described as "a hopeful cinematic love story coupled with a thrilling epic adventure that follows one man's journey to redemption through a country that changes his life."

Actor Charlie Hunnam-starrer series ‘Shantaram’ will not be returning for a second season.
Its Season 1 finale, released tomorrow, December 16, will serve as a series finale, reports ‘Variety’.
Based on the Gregory David Roberts’ epic, 900-plus-page novel, Shantaram was an ambitious, big-scope undertaking, shot across two continents, which was impacted by the pandemic.
The series had shot two episodes before pausing filming in late-February 2020. Because of its expansive nature requiring filming in multiple countries, the series did not resume production on the remaining 10 episodes until May 2021.
‘Shantaram’, which hasn’t generated the level of buzz that some of Apple TV+’s popular titles have, follows Lin Ford (Hunnam), who escapes a maximum-security Australian prison, reinvents himself as a doctor in the slums of 1980s Bombay, gets entangled with a local mafia boss and eventually uses his gun-running and counterfeiting skills to fight against the invading Russian troops in Afghanistan. The single-shot short is a tricky cinematic feat to nail. It shouldn’t operate as a gimmick, but rather as another tool in opening up the story you’re telling on screen. That’s what works in Roxy Rezvany’s short romantic comedy drama Photo Booth, the story of two immigrants in 70s London who sit down to take some photos. The locked-off, 16:9 frame allows Rezvany’s characters to unfold in front of us. They laugh, they bicker, they become whole. Rezvany’s film makes use of the way in which the single-shot format captures everything because that is precisely the point, we are being shown these people in all of their flaws and their strengths. It’s a gripping, empathetic film that Dn is delighted to share below alongside a conversation with Rezvany, where she breaks down the process of showing these characters through this lens, the production...

Apple TV+ just released the official trailer for Shantaram, a new drama based on Gregory David Roberts’ bestselling book and starring Charlie Hunnam. The new trailer was accompanied by a batch of photos from the 12-episode season which premieres on October 14, 2022.
Apple TV+ will air the first three episodes on October 14th followed by new episodes on subsequent Fridays. The season will wrap up on December 16, 2022.
Charlie Hunnam says that although the first photo Apple TV+ released from Shantaram featured him riding a motorcycle, this series has nothing else in common with Sons of Anarchy. And his character, Lin Ford, is dramatically different from Jax Teller.
“I thought that was very cheeky that Apple released that image as the first image,” said Hunnam in an interview with EW. “I’m on a motorcycle in the show for approximately two minutes maximum over the course of 12 hours, so I hope people...

It gave stars Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin a final outing that was worthy of their eight years in the spy trenches as Carrie Mathison and Saul Berenson, the CIA prodigy gone rogue and her faithful mentor, respectively.
“Prisoners of War” began with a glimpse of Carrie riding in the back of a car while the had a vision of her long-lost love, Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis...

Homeland Season 8 Episode 3
Up until tonight, the final year of Homeland has very much felt like it was setting a table: How is Carrie Mathison after her mental break in the captive hands of Russians? What could compel Saul Berenson to put her in the field so soon after such trauma? And why would she get to stay?
The answers were: better but not great; the necessity of preserving Afghanistan War peace talks; and Yevgeny and the gosh darn Russians are up to something again!
It has been interesting, and forced us to reconsider the American legacy of the early 21st century in the years after 9/11, which like it or not has constantly had Afghanistan at its center. However, it hasn’t necessarily been riveting television either.
