After consecutive years of healthy double-digit growth, podcast ad revenues grew at a slower pace in 2023 posting a modest revenue increase of 5% to $1.9 billion, according to Iab’s U.S. Podcast Advertising Revenue Study: 2023 Revenue & 2024-2026 Growth Projections.
This was due in large part to a challenging advertising climate that particularly affected mid-tier companies, resulting in losses that tempered the sector's overall growth trajectory.
The eighth annual Iab U.S. Podcast Advertising Revenue Study, prepared for Iab by PricewaterhouseCoopers Llp (“PwC”), quantifies annual podcast advertising revenues generated over the past year, analyzes revenue share by ad category and content genre, and forecasts future revenues through 2026.
“While a few of the largest podcast companies maintained double-digit growth, mid-tier companies hit a speed bump,” said Chris Bruderle, VP, Industry Insights & Content Strategy, Iab. “But revenue is already bouncing back.”
Podcasting is projected to return to double-digit growth (12%), with revenues of over $2B this year.

Between April 29 and May 2 of 2024, the NewFronts are coming back to New York City for another round of ad pitches led by major content publishers. The Interactive Advertising Bureau (Iab) has revealed the full agenda for the 2024 NewFronts, and the list of presenters includes a mix of familiar faces and digital media upstarts.
As per usual, the NewFronts slate will be a busy time for attendees. The Iab, which organizes the annual pitchfest, has packed the schedule with wall-to-wall presentations across all four days. Google will lead off the proceedings on the morning of the 29th, and its video hub YouTube will follow up with a reception that evening. Though YouTube is still a prominent partner for the NewFronts, it no longer times its Brandcast to coincide with the event. This year, CEO Neal Mohan‘s address to potential buyers will take place on May 15.

Fox News’ last-minute decision to pay nearly $800 million to avert a trial over accusations it defamed Dominion Voting System by broadcasting false statements that the 2020 presidential election was stolen is paying off.
A New York state supreme court judge, in an order issued Wednesday, found that Smartmatic must face Fox News’ counterclaims accusing the voting machine company of trying to suppress the network’s speech by bringing a $2.7 billion lawsuit. The court grounded the reasoning, in part, on the absence of a verdict concluding that Fox News defamed Dominion Voting Systems.
“There remained a triable issue of fact for trial in that action as to whether defendants acted with actual malice, which is an element that plaintiffs need to prove here as well,” the order stated.
But in a win for Smartmatic, New York Supreme Justice David Cohen refused to dismiss its suit against Fox. He found that the company...

The New York judge overseeing Smartmatic’s $2.7 billion lawsuit against Fox issued two rulings today, handing each side a win.
Smartmatic sued Fox, network personalities and guests in 2021, claiming that they amplified false claims that the election systems company was involved in rigging the 2020 election.
Another company, Dominion Voting Systems, also sued Fox, but settled the case for $787.5 million last year just as it was about to go to trial in a Delaware Court.
In one ruling, New York Judge David Cohen refused to dismiss Smartmatic’s claims against Fox Corporation, concluding that the election systems company had “sufficiently alleged” that Rupert Murdoch and Lachlan Murdoch played “an affirmative role” in the broadcast of defamatory statements. The ruling is not a decision on whether the Smartmatic claims are true, just that the company had cleared the threshold in its lawsuit with enough factual allegations to be a triable issue.
Among other things,...

On "Futurama," Hermes Conrad (Phil Lamarr) is an unusual character. He's a relaxed, Jamaican limbo champion who enjoys meals with his family and (although never seen on camera) consuming marijuana. Hermes is so good at limboing, in fact, that he can slip underneath the company stove at Planet Express. He once served on the Jamaican Olympic limbo team.
At the same time, Hermes is a high-ranking bureaucrat who is a massive stickler for detail, always careful to file and refile papers, making sure they are each quintuple-stamped. Hermes' filing skills and attention to tiny details have saved the day on more than one occasion. Hermes even had a catchy song in the 2000 episode "How Hermes Requisitioned His Groove Back," explaining that even as a child, he required friends to fill out the proper paperwork before they were allowed to attend his birthday party. "We didn't choose to be bureaucrats," he sang,...

HBO's new documentary The Defiant Ones traces the rise of two men who have helped create the modern musical landscape: engineer/producer/record executive/Apple Music impresario Jimmy Iovine and engineer/producer/rapper/headphone mogul Dr. Dre.
The four-part series plays as a bromance of sorts, with Iovine as the neurotic, pedal-to-the-metal New Yorker and Dre as the inscrutable sonic mastermind. The former talks fast and animatedly, constantly checks his phone and never seems to stop fidgeting, even when seated; the latter takes long, thoughtful pauses before speaking, and reminds...

The Senate Commerce Committee held a wide-ranging hearing Wednesday on the future of online video transmission, consumer choice and consolidation among pay TV and broadband providers. Among the witnesses were David Cohen, Comcast's executive vice president, and John Stankey, At&T's group president and chief strategy officer. The two business execs argued that consolidation in the telecom industry is good for consumers and innovation. They also insisted that mega-mergers would not hurt online video providers, and would in fact be good for consumers.
