No.1's Week. Movie Week. '80s Week. Zzzzz.
Is it any wonder that X Factor ratings are tumbling when the show's theme weeks continue to be so predictable? Someone is singing 'Listen' from Dreamgirls you say? Gosh, we've never heard that before.
In the spirit of goodwill, we've got some suggestions that might spice things up and get some songs on a Saturday night that we haven't heard murdered 256 times before.
1. Sing Your Name Week
Inspired by the brilliantly named Ben Haenow, who could perform Crowded House's 'Don't Dream It's Over' ("Hey Now! Hey Now!"), everyone has to sing a song connected to their name.
Fleur East can tackle anything by East 17, Stereo Kicks can tackle a Stereophonics vs Rizzle Kicks mash-up, Lola Saunders can tackle the Kinks classic, Jack Walton could attempt 'Hit The Road Jack' and Only The Young could murder 'We Are Young'.
2. Simon Cowell...

One Day
Directed by Lone Scherfig
Written by David Nichols
Based on his book
2011, USA
Around the time of its release, Ricky wrote a wonderful column on Super 8 called “8 Reasons to Love or Hate Super 8“, instead of writing an official review for the film. Rick loved the film but he also thought there were significant flaws. He argued both sides for why he loved Super 8 and why another critic would justifiably hate the film. I have decided to do a similar thing with One Day, the latest film by Lone Scherfig and her first since 2009′s An Education, my favorite film of that year. I was greatly anticipating this film due to my love for An Education and despite the meh trailers, I still went in hopeful. I guess I have to acknowledge the ridiculousness of this column. Critics may be tripping over themselves thinking of new pejorative words to describe "One Day," but eternal optimists can at least look to the film's soundtrack for a glimmer of quality.
Adapted from David Nicholls' best-selling 2009 book of the same name, Lone Scherfig's romance follows Dexter (Jim Sturgess) and Emma (Anne Hathaway) over the course of 20 years, starting with the pair meeting as university students in 1988 and checking up on them every subsequent anniversary of the day they met.
You'd think following two people over two decades would necessitate a time-spanning soundtrack. But despite the inclusion of artists ranging from Primal Scream to Robbie Williams to Ronan Keating, the album focuses on mid-late 1990s productions, either from one-hit wonders (Black Grape, Corona) or artists primarily tied to that decade (Fatboy Slim).
Given that the film's protagonists are British, it's no surprise that much of the soundtrack comprises UK artists.

The One Day soundtrack. David Nicholls’ debut novel Starter For Ten was adapted into an uninspired rom com vehicle for James McAvoy back in 2006, before his third novel One Day became an enormous and ubiquitous best seller. Nicholls, a former actor who only found success when he turned to writing, is set for life now, having turned himself into a bona fide institution, the new go-to guy for populist comedic romances, like Nick Hornby without the dark honesty (and, therefore, the deeper relevance and credibility). Lone Scherfig, director of the Hornby scripted An Education, is the woman charged with turning this mainstream lit hit into cinema gold, though you suspect that unlike An Education this project is aimed more towards profitability than quality (hence Hollywood starlet Ann Hathaway taking the Carey Mulligan role).

Yes, this is a decades spanning love story set in Britain, so we're not surprised the forthcoming soundtrack to Lone Scherfig's "One Day" reflects that, but man, we definitely had a time warp/flashback when we saw James was on this thing. It has been a long time since we heard those guys. Anyway, spanning seventeen tracks--with four dedicated to Rachel Portman's score--the forthcoming soundtrack to the Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess vehicle is appropriately dated to a certain time and place. Tears For Fears ("Sowing The Seeds Of Love"! Total guilty pleasure), Black Grape (remember those dudes?), Primal Scream, Fatboy…...

Shaun Ryder has admitted that even he doesn’t understand his own songs.
The former Black Grape and Happy Mondays singer doesn’t understand why Factory Records boss Tony Wilson has previously described him as a “great poet” because he thinks there is nothing clever about his songwriting.
He told Q magazine: “Tony was one for great claims and that’s very nice of him, but I dunno. I write short stories and set them to music. I don’t know what I’m on about half the time.
“If I am a poet, then my school definitely didn’t spot it. I was in the lowest set for English. Did any teacher encourage me to be good with words? Did they f**k.”

The Jackal's exploits are soundtracked by Wire and New Order in an epic biopic of a dark-side James Bond who had 'pop star moments'
Apparently it's all the Guardian's fault. In 1975, shortly after the international terrorist now known as "Carlos" first gained notoriety by shooting two French detectives and an informer in Paris, Barry Woodhams, boyfriend of an ex-girlfriend of Carlos's, found a bag of weapons belonging to the trigger-happy terrorist in their London apartment. Not trusting the police, he called the Guardian, whose reporter Peter Niesewand came round to inspect, spied a copy of Frederick Forsyth's novel The Day Of The Jackal on a bookshelf, and concluded that Carlos had been reading it. The next day, in its front-page world scoop, the Guardian christened Carlos "The Jackal". The rest is history. Except the book didn't belong to Carlos at all; it belonged to Woodhams.
