It’s not all that common to come across a show on Netflix that’s so unbelievably crass it makes you question whether cancel culture even exists. Paradise Pd, which often occupied the streamer’s Top 10 TV Shows list in 23 countries, is one of those titles. First debuting on the platform in August 2018, the animated adult comedy series brought to you by Waco O’Guin and Roger Black, co-creators of Brickleberry on Comedy Central, pushes every societal boundary imaginable.

During a Friday performance on his “From Scratch” tour, comedian John Mulaney surprised his audience — and drew criticism from some fans — when Dave Chappelle appeared as the opener and told what were described as “transphobic jokes.”
Chappelle’s opening set occurred during a show at Ohio State University’s Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Although there is no footage from the event, as attendees were required to lock their phones up beforehand, several audience members took to social media afterwards to criticize the show. According to attendees, Chappelle appeared as a surprise opener, and told jokes targeting the transgender community. Mulaney reportedly came onstage and hugged Chappelle at the conclusion of the opening set. Some fans in the crowd expressed their disappointment after the show on Twitter:

Exclusive: Spoken Giants, a royalty administration company for creators of spoken word copyrights, said Friday that the Don Rickles estate and comedian Mike Birbiglia are the latest to sign with the Nashville firm. CEO Jim King also applauded a large payout by digital services to music creators this week, but wondered when authors of spoken word content would also receive “appropriate compensation.”
King, a former executive at music rights group BMI, with comedy label 800 Pound Gorilla Records co-founders Ryan Bitzer and Damion Greiman, launched Spoken Giants in October for comedians, podcasters, speechwriters and other wordsmiths — whom King says have been missing out on million in royalties. Jim King, former executive at music rights group BMI, and comedy label 800 Pound Gorilla Records co-founders Ryan Bitzer and Damion Greiman have launched Spoken Giants, a royalty administration company specifically for creators of spoken word copyrights.
Based in Nashville and aimed at comedians, podcasters, speechwriters and other wordsmiths, Spoken Giants said it’s already working with members including Lewis Black, Dan Cummins, Gerry Dee, Pete Holmes, Kyle Kinane, Kathleen Madigan, the Ralphie May estate, Leanne Morgan and Theo Von, The founders announced the firm publicly Wednesday and hope to scale up dramatically, noting that “millions in royalties have been unclaimed by, or simply not paid to, spoken word creators.”
Rights organizations have long existed in music and Spoken Giants will follow that industry’s precedents “to correct the global financial oversights of the past,” they said.
Spoken Giants represents underlying composition copyrights and its revenue is based on a percentage of what it collects.

Easy as it might be to lump it all into one category, not all standup on Netflix is created equal. In 2018 alone, the service has made available a new offering every week to fuel the interests (and algorithmic preferences) of comedy die-hards and casual viewers alike.
Some of these come in the form of star-driven, one-night-only events, others in small collections of multiple specials. This week brings the arrival of “The Comedy Lineup,” the second omnibus grouping of bite-sized sets designed to give audiences more new favorites for their time. Unlike its companion collection “The Standups,” episodes in “The Comedy Lineup” are an even more digestible 15 minutes versus the half hours that came earlier in the year from people like Aparna Nancherla, Gina Yashere, and Kyle Kinane.
With that more condensed timeframe comes an even wider variety of comics on display in “The Comedy Lineup,” which brings together eight comedians,...

"We're in a Fast & Furious movie right now, nothing has to make sense." Gunpowder & Sky has debuted a trailer for a wacky comedy called Random Tropical Paradise, about two friends who end up going on a honeymoon together. The story is that, when one guy discovers his soon-to-be-wife is cheating on him, he cancels the wedding. But his friend suggests that instead of cancelling the honeymoon, they turn it into a "homie-moon" and take the trip to this random tropical paradise together and have fun while they can. As with all tropical paradise movies, this dips into the drug boss trope and there's clearly a few drug trip scenes in this. Starring Bryan Greenberg, Brooks Wheelan, Joe Pantoliano, Spencer Grammer, Brittany Furlan, Beth Littleford, Kyle Kinane, & Alphonso McAuley. This looks a bit too crazy for my tastes. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Sanjeev Sirpal's Random Tropical Paradise, from YouTube: For Harry Fluder,...

Which celebrity will be win the coveted title of “Best Guest of the Night”?
That’s the question that TruTV’s “Talk Show the Game Show” asks when it premieres on April 5. When stars visit late-night talk shows to promote a project or themselves, they need to play nice to win over the host, Guy Branum (“Chelsea Lately,” “The Mindy Project”) and audience. “Talk Show the Game Show” awards them for these skills.

Grief is a terrible animal, red of claw and tooth, and once it gets hold of you, there is no way of knowing what it will do to you. Over the last year, I've watched a dear friend of mine struggle with back to back losses of two of the most important people in her life, and at times, I've genuinely worried that it would be too much for her to take. This is a strong, vibrant person, and grief landed on her in a way that very nearly crushed all of that joy and vitality right out of her. I've had my own bouts with profound sorrow over the last year as a result of the end of my marriage, and while I feel like I've reached the other side of all of that, I remain shaken by just how damaged I was by things. For the first time in my adult life,...

Starting as a series of shorts on the website and then expanding into a full TV series on Comedy Central, the show has featured some very talented actors and comedians reenacting history in a way that seems like it might eventually get someone hurt. Now the series will be returning for its second season on June 24th, and there’s still a very good chance it will result in a case of severe alcohol poisoning.
The show has a pretty simple premise: one comedian gets rip-roaring drunk and rambles on about an important historical event, and some other people act it out. This combines one of America’s favorite pasttimes (drinking) with one of its least favorite pasttimes (learning) for an end result that is far funnier than it has any right to be.

The Super Bowl is coming, guys. This means it’s time to do the Super Bowl Shuffle. Don’t know how? Let this bizarre group of comedians, indie musicians, and Internet cats teach you how. Louisville radio host Sean Cannon assembled the team to cover the 1985 Chicago Bears classic to raise money to benefit Reading Is Fundamental. You can purchase it here and/or listen to it below. You’ll hear Lil Bub, David Wain, Comedy Bang! Bang!’s Scott Aukerman, Tom Scharpling, My Morning Jacket's Jim James (on sax), Les Savy Fav's Tim Harrington, comedian Kyle Kinane, Dave Hill, Man Man's Honus Honus, the Long Winters' John Roderick, and wrestler Colt Cabana. It’s so bad, you know it’s good.

Welcome to Issue 17 of ‘The Marvelous Da7e!’
This weekend is New York Comic Con, and I don’t think I’ll be as present on the floor as I was last year and the year before. There just aren’t a ton of movies representing themselves and as much as I want a plush Rocket Raccoon, I made a pledge to myself earlier this year to stop putting large chunks of my finances into the various collections of toys I have at home and the office.
So, unlike Nycc’s San Diego counterpart, we’re not expecting a ton of news on the superhero movie front. That means I’m not expecting anything groundbreaking out of the Con. Well, not officially. El Mayimbe usually does some worth-while partying that becomes fruitful. Little mustache-clad me will be supporting the industry by catching up on the half-dozen Marvel crossover events currently running.

Last night was the second annual [Redacted] comedy show, brought to the world by your friends at The A.V. Club along with Constellation and Just For Laughs. Once again, the comedians were kept secret until they walked on stage, and once again it was a lot of fun—and raised a bunch of money for 826 Chicago. And now we must thank everyone who donated their time, in order of appearance: Brian Babylon, Cameron Esposito, Kyle Kinane, Brian Posehn, David Cross, Todd Barry, Mac McCaughan, Jason Narducy, Jon Glaser (sort of), Todd Glass, Doug Benson, and John Hodgman. As Comic-Con approaches, so does Nerdist's 'Course of the Force'. The charity run to San Diego will kick off in a few weeks, and Nerdist has announced the hosts and correspondents who will follow the event down the Pacific Coast. Tradition media personalities such as Carrie Keagan and Ashley Eckstein will be joined by several familiar new media faces, including Shira Lazar, Jessica Chobot, Alex Albrecht, Alison Haislip, and, of course, the Nerdist himself, Chris Hardwick. All of these contributors cater to the nerd crowd in some way. Keagan has been a guest host on Attack of the Show in the past, Eckstein voiced Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Chobot hosts several shows for IGN, Haislip and Albrecht co-host 4 Points on the Nerdist channel, and Lazar has interviewed tons of nerdy YouTubers. As for Hardwick, we know for a fact he's as good of a host as anyone.

The 'gamer who lives in his mom's basement and lacks all social graces' trope is nothing new, but a new series from Machinima-affiliated Studio8 is putting a spin on the concept by depicting what happens when said nerds interact with socially-confident comedians. The series is called Matt's Game Chamber, and it recently debuted on Studio8's YouTube channel. The host of Matt's Game Chamber is Matt Ingebretson, who lives in a basement owned by his "slutty sister Brandie." Ingebretson, at least when in character, constantly mumbles through his script and exhibits nerdy tendencies such as authoring fanfiction and using the basement as a gaming lair. In each episode of Matt's Game Chamber, he brings a comedian into the basement and stumbles through an awkward interview while his subject spends more time playing games than listening to him. Check out the first episode, featuring Kyle Kinane, who we last saw mocking...

Annoying Orange isn't the only web series with a current mission of parodying political ads. Comedy Central Central recently launched 30 Seconds Over Washington, a web series that makes fun of terrible political ads from past and present. The show is hosted by comedian Kyle Kinane and is presented as part of the network's Indecision 2012 lineup, which features snaky news and analysis in an nice neat blog format. 30 Seconds Over Washington is broken into several different segments, some of which feature real politicians and others that showcase 'fan ads' on the Internet. At any rate, the end result is always the same: we watch some nutjob espouse whatever weird policies he supports, and Kinane follows after with a quick one liner. It's as if The Daily Show met Mystery Science Theater

Colt Cabana has one of the most unique jobs in the world: comedic pro wrestler. When he's not busy dishing out punches and bodyslams for rabid crowds, he's making them laugh with his patented brand of slapstick. And this week, he's got to perform in front of one of the most intimidating crowds in the world: the Gathering of the Juggalos, the yearly summer music festival hosted by the notorious hip hop act, the Insane Clown Posse. Thousands of fans with painted faces will be heading to the sweltering heat of Cave-In-Rock, Illinois, for five days of Faygo soda, nudity and illegal substances -- and it's Cabana's job to play the villain as a marijuana-hating police officer.
