There are plenty of DC-based projects currently in development, and while all eyes are on Gunn’s Dcu and his upcoming ‘Creature Commandos’ & ‘Superman’ we occasionally forget that Elseworlds, which ‘The Batman’ film series and several other upcoming projects are a part of, are doing their own thing. The next big thing is ‘The Penguin’ live-action series.
‘The Penguin’ is set to be a spinoff of ‘The Batman’ film series, set in the alternative universe, distinctive from the Dcu, and due to the release getting closer every day, we decided to summarize everything we know about the show.
The show takes place a week after the events of ‘The Batman’
Despite ‘The Penguin’ and ‘The Batman’ not being a part of the mainline Dcu, they do have a shared cinematic universe. The upcoming show will take place a week after the events of the aforementioned movie. Following the events of the movie,...

However, it’s worth remembering that Elseworlds, which encompasses ‘The Batman’ film series and other upcoming projects, is forging its own path. Stepping into the spotlight next is ‘The Penguin’ live-action series.

When Colin Farrell was cast as Oswald Cobblepot, The Penguin, in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, many fans were skeptical as they did not know what to expect from the interpretation. Farrell definitely did not look the part, but the costume design crew did an amazing job and Farrell delivered a brilliant villain who was so good that HBO ordered a standalone spin-off series focusing on The Penguin. The series, which will be titled The Penguin, is set to be released later this year and we have just today received some interesting casting rumors!
Namely, we know that Farrell is reprising his role and that the series will focus on Penguin taking over Gotham’s criminal underworld after the death of Carmine Falcone (played by John Turturro in the film) at the hands of the Riddler.
The series will obviously focus on Penguin’s clash with what remains of the Falcone family,...

Last week, Max finally released the trailer for their much-anticipated The Batman spin-off series, The Penguin, teeing up its fall release date. Overall, it looks highly reminiscent of Matt Reeves’ film, with the cinematography very much in the Grieg Fraser mode. But what else do we know about The Penguin? More than you may think.
The Penguin is set after The Batman.
The plot of The Penguin is set to follow the title character, once again portrayed by Colin Farrell, as he rises through the ranks of the Gotham City criminal underworld. After the events of The Batman and the flooding of Gotham, including the death of Carmine Falcone, Cobblepot desperately wants to fill the power vacuum. Colin Farrell has also indicated that the film will serve as an origin story for the Penguin, something we have seen twice on screen before in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, played by Danny DeVito.

Wak! Wak! Fans who wanted Matt Reeves’ The Batman to lean into the violence of Gotham City could be in for a treat when The Penguin arrives on Max. The spinoff series, starring Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, could find the classic villain breaking more than bones as he continues to waddle toward the top of Gotham’s criminal food chain. Speaking with MovieZine, Farrell said The Penguin is gnarlier than Reeves’ PG-13 Batman film and should be considered “incredibly violent.”
“It was a long and really wonderful experience,” Farrell said about filming The Penguin series. “It’s dark; that’s what I can tell you about it. It’s really dark. It’s really heavy, I think— it certainly was doing it. Which is not to say I didn’t have fun, I had an amazing time doing it. It’s incredibly violent. It’s one man’s rise...

The Penguin trailer offers a glimpse into the forthcoming installment of The Batman saga ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
The latest trailer for The Penguin sees Colin Farrell reprising his role as Oswald Cobblepot, alias Penguin. The trailer delves into the DC villain’s contemplation of the posthumous recognition bestowed upon a local gangster by the community during his upbringing, prompting Cobblepot to ponder the significance of such acknowledgement. “Can you imagine being remembered like that?” Cobblepot queries an off-screen character. The trailer doesn’t spill much about the story, but it does give us quick peeks at Cristin Milioti playing Sofia Falcone and Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni.
Announced in September 2021, “The Penguin” continues the saga of Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot shortly after the events depicted in “The Batman 2023,” as he manoeuvres to assert his authority within Gotham’s criminal hierarchy. The production of the eight-episode limited series commenced in...

The Penguin aims to one day be remembered like a gangster of Gotham City yore in a new teaser trailer for Max’s series offshoot of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which is now on track for a fall 2024 release.
Ordered to series over two years ago, the eight-episode Warner Bros. Television/DC Studios drama “continues the epic crime saga” that filmmaker Reeves began in 2022 with Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Batman, and centers on the character played by Colin Farrell (beneath many prosthetics) in the film.

The bat is nowhere to be seen in the latest trailer for “The Penguin,” but that doesn’t mean that Gotham City crime is running rampant…yet.
Max’s “Batman” spinoff “The Penguin” is produced by “The Batman” writer/director Matt Reeves, with Dylan Clark executive producing. Colin Farrell reprises his role of corrupt nightclub owner Oz Cobb from Reeves’ 2022 feature starring Robert Pattinson as the titular superhero.
Following the events of the film which saw most of Oswald’s gang members either killed or incarcerated, Oswald is climbing the ranks in underground organized crime. The cast is rounded out by Cristin Milioti, who portrays Sofia, daughter of John Turturro’s mafia boss Carmine Falcone, and Theo Rossi, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Carmen Ejogo, François Chau, and David H. Colin Farrell returns to Gotham City as Oz Cobb, aka Oswald Cobblepot, in the trailer for “The Penguin,” a spinoff series of “The Batman” coming this fall to Max.
“The Penguin” takes place immediately following the events of DC’s 2022 blockbuster, tracing Cobblepot’s rise to power in the Gotham underworld as he becomes one of the most prominent villains in the “Batman” universe. Farrell gives a classic gangster monologue throughout the trailer, which slowly ramps up the violence and gunfights in Gotham City’s seedy underground.
“When I was a kid, there was a gangster, real old-school type. Rex Calabrese. He was a big deal. He helped people. He saw you on the street, he’d call out to you,” Cobblepot narrates in the trailer. “When I was 14 or something, he has a heart attack and dies, still holding a cigar. In my neighborhood, they throw a parade in his honor.

Colin Farrell is returning to the makeup chair to transform himself into Oswald Cobblepot for Max‘s The Penguin series. After months of being grounded because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, production for The Penguin is taking flight the week after Thanksgiving. The series, a spin-off of Matt Reeves’ The Batman film, started filming in March but stalled because of the writers’ strike in June.
In addition to revealing the production restart date for The Penguin, Empire recently dropped a new image from the series:
The eight-episode drama continues Penguin’s rise as one of Gotham’s most notorious criminals, from the chilling dancefloors of the Iceberg Lounge to the darkest corners of Gotham City’s underworld. Cristin Milioti plays Sofia Falcone, a prolific crime boss who succeeded in taking Oswald’s empire apart piece by piece. “The Penguin” is heading back into production.
The Max-dc series, which stars Colin Farrell in a spinoff of the film “The Batman,” is set to return to shooting now that the SAG-AFTRA strike has been settled. Production on the series will resume the week after Thanksgiving, Variety has learned. It originally began in March 2023 but was suspended in June during the writers’ strike and subsequent actors’ strike in Hollywood.
Farrell will reprise the role of Oswald “The Penguin” Cobblepot in the series after delivering a critically-acclaimed turn as the iconic character in the hit film.
The show will pick up in the immediate aftermath of the conclusion of “The Batman” and will chart Cobblepot’s rise to power in the Gotham underworld to become one of Batman’s most feared villains. On the live-action side, The Penguin has previously been played by actors like Burgess Meredith, Danny DeVito, and Robin Lord Taylor.

Actress Ariel Kavoussi has slowly moved from acting to directing shorts and earlier this year she put together her feature film debut with a funky long title of: The Next Big One: A Comedy with Three Potential Problems. The 2023 Doc NYC lineup has officially been announced.
The program for the 14th annual festival includes opening night selection “The Contestant,” a real-life “Truman Show”-esque story of a Japanese comedian who was trapped alone and naked in an apartment for 15 months as part of a reality TV show. Doc NYC runs from November 8 through 26, featuring 30 world premieres and 26 U.S. premieres with more than 200 films programmed. New films from Wim Wenders, Penny Lane, Dawn Porter, and Jeff Zimbalist are among the lineup for America’s largest documentary festival, with screenings at New York City’s IFC Center, Sva Theatre, and Village East by Angelika. In-person screenings take place November 8 through 16, with online selections available through November 26.

Britain’s official post-wwi administration of Palestine lasted from 1920-48 and is probably the UK colonial enterprise least addressed by its fiction filmmakers. But now prolific writer-director Michael Winterbottom uses that complicated era as a backdrop to the compelling historical romance “Shoshana.” A passion project 15 years in the making and based on real people and events, the film employs the ill-fated, cross-cultural relationship between a ranking member of the British Palestine Police Force and a young Jewish woman to explore the way extremism and violence push people apart, forcing them to choose sides.
It’s worth noting upfront that while the British rulers had to deal with both Palestine’s Arab and Jewish citizens, each of whom want an independent country, the narrative here hews firmly to a British and Jewish p.o.v., with Arabs barely characterized except as victims and troublemakers. By the 1930s, Palestine is a cauldron...

The Harry Potter films tell the story of a young boy who overcomes tragedy to become a great wizard. Based on the books by J.K. Rowling (who has said some things that are absolutely awful), the stories spellbound millions of people who waited for their owl message telling them they got into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and bought wands by the gazillions. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, some incredible stunt performers were doing amazing work to make us buy that the main actors were actually pulling off these feats of bravery. There was flying on brooms, fight scenes, explosions, and so much more over the course of eight films. Stuntman David Holmes was there for every one of them, doubling star Daniel Radcliffe and taking on the dangerous things the main actor couldn't do.
Unfortunately, during a rehearsal scene for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," Holmes was injured.

Hulu canceled the show in August 2020 after just one season.
“They didn’t realize what that show was and what it could do,” Kravitz told Elle magazine. “The amount of letters, DMs, people on the street and women that look like us — like, that love for the show, it meant something to people. It was a big mistake.”
After Hulu canceled “High Fidelity” in August 2020, Kravitz took to Instagram to thank the show’s cast and crew for “all the love and heart you put into this show.” The actress added, “I’m in awe of all of you.

Breakups suck - a sentiment that I found myself face to face with upon hearing the news about Hulu's decision to cancel High Fidelity. I'll admit, when I first heard that Hulu had decided to revive the intellectual property for a series, I wasn't completely thrilled. Unpopular opinion: I wasn't head over heels for the John Cusack film, and I never read Nick Hornby's book. Once I saw Zoë Kravitz and Da'Vine Joy Randolph were part of the lineup, dread quickly turned into anticipation.
Hulu's reimagining of High Fidelity follows Rob (Kravitz), a record-store owner still reeling after a traumatic breakup with her ex-fiancé. Wondering if there's something wrong with her, she hunts down her exes in search of answers. Each episode is accompanied by a killer soundtrack to guide us through the narrative while providing insight into its characters. But this Rob isn't...

Zoë Kravitz is taking a shot at Hulu’s on-screen diversity record over the cancellation of her series, High Fidelity, after one season.
In a response to fellow actress Tessa Thompson’s reaction to Kravitz’s Instagram post on the cancellation, Kravitz wrote, “At least hulu has a ton of other shows starring women of color we can watch. oh wait.”
While Hulu has recently added such series as Wu-Tang: An American Saga, featuring a predominantly Black cast, Ramy Youssef’s Ramy, and Love, Victor, with a Latinx title character, the leads in those series are all male.
Kravitz also received support from screenwriter and actor Lena Waithe, who wrote, “Nooooooo!!! I rarely find shows that genuinely impress me. This one did. I told you how much I loved this show. And I still do. This one definitely deserved another season.”
Questlove, the drummer of The Roots, added his sentiments on the cancellation.

Rob's search for love is over.
Hulu has canceled High Fidelity after one season, it has been announced.
Deadline first reported the news, noting that Hulu deliberated on the decision for a while, even extending the cast options for a month.
The series was originally set to launch on Disney+, but was shifted to Hulu ahead of the launch, thanks in part to it appealing to a more adult audience than the network wanted.
While the series is canceled, Deadline notes that a potential revival on another network is a long shot.
It's rare for streaming shows to be saved after cancellation. In fact, it's rare for any show to get saved, but there are more hurdles when it comes to rescuing a streaming series.
Zoë Kravitz starred as Rob, a Brooklyn record store owner who was a little too obsessed with her failed romantic relationships, but her love for music helped her cope.

Hulu has opted against a second season of its “High Fidelity” remake, canceling the Zoe Kravitz-led series after only one season.

“High Fidelity” was originally developed for Disney+ but was rerouted to Hulu due the show’s more mature content. “High Fidelity” was from writers Veronica West and Sarah Kucserka and is an ABC Signature Studios production.

“High Fidelity” starring Zoe Kravitz has been canceled by Hulu after one season, Variety has confirmed.
The series was a gender-bending, modern reimagining of the 2000 film starring John Cusack, with Kravitz playing his role. She starred as Rob, a pop culture-obsessed owner of a record store. Jake Lacy, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and David H. Holmes rounded out the cast of the lone season, which was critically praised.
The TV series was created by Veronica West and Sarah Kucserka, who executive produced with Kravitz and Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec, Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg from Midnight Radio.
Originally ordered to series more than two years ago, “High Fidelity” was initially being developed as a Disney Plus show. However, it moved to Hulu in April 2019 after Disney took control of the competing streaming site. The adult themes in the series made it a better fit for Hulu than the typically PG-focused, family-friendly shows on Disney Plus.

High Fidelity, starring and executive produced by Zoë Kravitz, will not be getting a second season on Hulu. I hear the cast and production team of the series, a reimagining of Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel and the 2000 John Cusack movie, were notified of the cancellation today.
The decision was not easy and came after lengthy deliberations, I hear. The show, which has been well received by critics and is headlined by a big star with a massive following in Kravitz, had internal support at Hulu, whose brass took extra time to mull a potential renewal, with sibling ABC Signature extending the options on the cast by a month to accommodate that.
In the end, the streamer opted not to proceed with a second season. Finding another home for the show is considered a long shot, I hear.

In Hulu’s female-driven reboot of High Fidelity, costume designer Sarah Laux found the opportunity to tackle her first TV series, honing trendy, vintage looks for a set of music-loving Brooklynites.
Based on a beloved novel by Nick Hornby—which Stephen Frears previously adapted into a classic film—the series centers on Rob Brooks (Zoë Kravitz), a music-obsessed native of Brooklyn Heights, who runs a record store, while struggling with a series of failed relationships.
An Obie Award-winner known primarily for her work in theater—both on and Off-Broadway—Laux came to the project as a result of her longstanding relationship with Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood. “Colleen is an old friend and mentor for like 14 years. I’ve done some stuff with her, and did a feature that she recommended me for,” the costume designer explains. “I just sent her an email and said, ‘I’ve been doing a lot of theater lately,...

For “High Fidelity,” there are a handful of component parts that, for lack of a better phrase, just have to work. A balancing act of romance, music, and city life, this year’s Hulu adaptation of the beloved Nick Hornby novel is such a soothing watch because all of those pieces clicked right into place.

When Jake Lacy was offered the role of Clyde, the on-again off-again love interest of the show’s main character on Hulu’s “High Fidelity,” he asked the show’s producers how his character might be more than just “wallpaper.” After often playing nice guys and boyfriends in film and on TV, Lacy wanted to do more than the typical cardboard-cutout love interest trope often seen on romantic comedies.
“Often the parts that I have played are in a lot of ways a character that completes somebody else’s arc,” he explains. “Sometimes those characters are not fleshed out as well because their part of the story is to assist someone else’s narrative.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Lacy above.

Even with the miraculous Second Coming of vinyl, the prospects for a successful reboot of the record-store drama “High Fidelity” seemed grim. Twenty years after the John Cusack film, nearly 25 after Nick Hornby’s novel, the shrines to vinyl depicted in the book and movie — epicenters of local music scenes, vanguards of taste and attitude, places where music fans congregated, debated and dated — are virtually extinct. Sure, they’re still beloved centers of fandom and fetishism, but these days they usually feel more like libraries or museums than the musical newsstands they used to be.
Yet Hulu’s reimagining of the franchise is a remarkable success on virtually every level. The reinvention of the setting and storyline are clever and on point, and the acting and characters are believable (given the context) and lovingly rendered — and it would seem to herald the arrival of Zoe Kravitz as a major new star.

[Note: The following contains spoilers for Season 1 of “High Fidelity.”]
For a show that features a central character speaking directly to the audience and by the end of the third episode has introduced Blondie lead singer Debbie Harry playing herself as a spectral dispenser of romantic advice, it’s hard to imagine that “High Fidelity” would have surprises left by the time it reached its opening season’s home stretch.
But that’s exactly what the new Hulu series did when, for an episode, Rob (Zoë Kravitz) turned over the reins to Simon (David H. Holmes) for one of the other Championship Vinyl employees to have his turn at sharing his heartbreak history with the audience.
“That was in the original pitch. We made a bit of a choice to not know anything about Simon for a very long time, because that’s part of his character. He’s super closed off. He doesn’t talk about his feelings,...

This past Valentine’s Day, Hulu debuted its original series High Fidelity, a reimagining of the 1995 Nick Hornby novel and 2000 John Cusack comedy. High Fidelity follows the life of a romantically frustrated record-store owner Rob (Zoe Kravitz) who revisits a few past lovers — what she refers to as her Top Five heartbreaks — in the hopes of better understanding why she’s still single. While the Hulu series depicts a gender-flipped lead and diverse cast set in 2020 Brooklyn (compared to the book’s mid-Nineties London and flick’s early-2000s Chicago), the themes of love,...
