American Film Market Trends
Solid packages: It’s hard to recall an AFM that had as many solid packages as this one. The emergence from Covid lockdowns and the lack of a market in Toronto this year have helped boost the offering. Since we were last in your inbox, we’ve also broken news of buzzy new projects from Martin McDonagh, Daisy Ridley (pictured) and Mathieu Kassovitz, and Guy Ritchie and Jake Gyllenhaal. Yesterday, we announced a new UK road trip from arthouse director Carol Morley which has Jane Campion aboard as an exec-producer. AFM has traditionally been known for its brawn, and while that is available this market, what stands out is the number of prestige dramas. Buyers we’ve spoken to have been particularly high on the scripts for movies like Firebrand and Lee.
Who runs the world?: As the market draws to a close, that leads us to another interesting – and positive – trend, which also counters the AFM norm: the number of strong female-fronted packages. Between Lee, Firebrand, MindFall, Ballerina, Role Play, Beth And Don, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Mamma Mafia, rarely can there have been as many female-fronted projects leading the slates of the major sellers. Now we wait for the deals to drop.
Climate Content Pledge
Cop-in: David Attenborough may have been appearing on TV screens for nigh on seven decades, but until now the question of what television can do to help combat global warming was on the fringes. That all changed at this week’s Cop 26 in Glasgow, as 12 UK networks signed up to a Climate Content Pledge, which includes an uprooting of commissioning processes to consider climate themes and a doubling down on shows that help audiences understand how the world can reach net zero.
‘Collective responsibility’: Signatories to the pledge include the heads of the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 along with Discovery and Sky in the UK. Speaking at Cop, C4 CEO Alex Mahon said broadcasters have a “collective responsibility” and can use their different programming strengths to reach more audiences. Those strengths equate to quiz shows and entertainment for ITV, sport for Sky and, according to former scientist Mahon, Celebrity Trash Monsters for C4. UK TV truly is the home of plurality.
Middle Eastern In The Spotlight
Strike while the Irons is hot: Andreas had the exclusive on production wrapping on Cello this week, a Jeremy Irons and Tobin Bell horror that is the first in a new wave of English-language projects looking to film in Saudi Arabia, which has been ramping up its film and TV ambitions. Only a handful of sizable English-language movies have shot in the country in recent decades. The Russo Brothers’ Cherry was the biggest back in 2019 but the number of productions is growing as investment increasingly flows in and out of the controversial state, which remains a lightning rod for debate due to the murder of Jamal Khashoggi and human rights abuses. Oh and something about a UK football team.
Growing interest: Among productions to shoot in the country recently are a Discovery Channel documentary on the AlUla region, narrated by Irons, and an AlUla brand campaign commercial directed by Bruno Aveillan. National Geographic is due to film two programs on the region and the area has seen multiple travel programs. This month, production is due to get underway on the Gerard Butler action-thriller Kandahar from Thunder Road, which will be one of, if not the biggest, English-language movies to shoot in the country. It’s all happening. At the Cannes Film Festival this year, Saudi officials were touting the striking AlUla valley, new production facilities and the country’s film and TV tax rebate of 35%. The nation is due to host its first major film festival next month, the Red Sea International Film Festival. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
Midas Man on ice
Help!: Another hot one from Andreas this week, who had the scoop on one of the most talked about films of the moment, Midas Man, pausing production, with director Jonas Åkerlund unlikely to continue. Åkerlund is “taking a break”, according to the production, with sources indicating he is unlikely to return. More likely to come on this one as the Brian Epstein biopic seeks a new director.
New Look BBC Comedy Team
Petrie Dish: BBC Comedy Director Jon Petrie (pictured), the most powerful person in UK comedy commissioning, unveiled his new-look team this week, picking producers from some of the nation’s biggest shows in his first major intervention since taking over from Shane Allen in September. In comes Trying’s Emma Lawson, E4’s Navi Lamba and Stath Lets Flats producer Seb Barwell (temporarily), as the seven-strong team is firmed up. Petrie’s move reassembles a team that was decimated last year with a spate of departures, as his predecessor Allen, Head of Comedy Kate Daughton and Commissioning Editors Sarah Asante and Alex Moody all departed within a few weeks of each other.
Russian Out Of Space
The Challenge: Don’t miss Diana Lodderhose’s exclusive sit-down with Russian director Klim Shipenko and actor Yuliya Peresild, who last month became the first film crew to shoot scenes in Outer Space for upcoming film The Challenge. Well worth your time.

Exclusive: Here’s an interesting one. Production has just wrapped on Cello, an under-the-radar English- and Arabic-language horror movie shot in Saudi Arabia by Saw filmmaker Darren Lynn Bousman.
Oscar winner Jeremy Irons (House of Gucci) and Saw star Tobin Bell lead cast alongside Syrian actor Samer Ismail (The Day I Lost My Shadow) and Saudi actress Elham Ali (Ashman), in the story of an aspiring cellist who learns that the cost of his brand-new cello is a lot more insidious than he first thought. Pic is scripted by Turki Al Alshikh, based on his novel.
The film, shot on location in Saudi Arabia and the Czech Republic, heralds from The Ice Road producer Lee Nelson of Envision Media Art. Exec producers include Sultan Al Muheisen and Niko Ruokosuo of Saudi outfit Alamiya and David Tish for Envision Media Arts. The movie was financed by Saudi firm Rozam Media, which...

We've got some new info on the Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters TV show, which is still very much in development…

Instead of a cinematic sequel to Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters, we could now be getting a TV show instead…
Only two months after Paramount recruited Bruno Aveillan to direct Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters 2, the studio has apparently decided to put a pin in that idea and is moving forward with a Hansel and Gretel TV show instead.
Deadline has reported that Paramount TV, MGM and Gary Sanchez Productions (founded by Adam McKay and Will Ferrell) are currently working together on the new TV idea, with the ideal end product being a cable network show.
It’s not clear whether Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton will feature in the telly show, but according to Deadline, “it sounds like they’ll start from scratch.” That sounds like a waste of two reasonably-sized star names to us, but what to do we know?

Back in 2013, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (which starred Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton) was something of an unexpected hit, despite failing to impress critics. Although the $50 million movie made only $55 million domestically, the fact that it racked up an additional $170 million overseas meant that Paramount has been slowly eyeing a sequel ever since.
When we last heard, Bruno Aveillan had been chosen to take the helm and Renner and Arterton were being eyed to reprise their roles (whether or not they’d be willing to do so is another matter), but Deadline now reports that the plan may have drastically changed. That’s because the Hansel & Gretel sequel has apparently been halted, as the studio is instead considering launching the property as a cable TV series through Paramount TV, with Gary Sanchez producing and MGM partnering up with them.

Paramount Pictures has scrapped plans for a sequel to 2013's sleeper hit fantasy action feature "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" and are instead planning to turn the property into a cable TV series through Paramount TV.
The $50 million first 'Hansel' film made $225 million worldwide, almost all of that overseas. Bruno Aveillan was slated to helm the sequel with Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton to star, but the decision to switch to TV has caught many by surprise and it's unclear if any will be involved beyond the film's original producers.
It marks the second Paramount film property to make the small screen switch of late, the other being the Jack Ryan franchise which will become an Amazon Original TV series produced by Carlton Cuse and Michael Bay.

Buoyed by a strong box office haul overseas, it was two years ago when Paramount officially issued the green light on Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters 2, but since then all has been quiet on the fantastical front. Over the weekend, though, Deadline broke news of the sequel finally beginning to pick up speed at the studio, with Bruno Aveillan supplanting Timmy Wirkola in the director’s chair.
Set to make his feature film debut, Aveillan has carved out a reputation for his commercial work hitherto, and it looks as though he’ll be overseeing Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton’s titular, monster-hunting siblings for Witch Hunters 2. Having passed on directorial duties, it’s understood that Wirkola – who helmed the 2013 sleeper hit – has penned an early version of the screenplay, and that the biggest hurdle currently facing the industry heads at Paramount is working around Renner’s bustling schedule.

The sequel to the 2013 sleeper hit Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters has found its director in Bruno Aveillan, an award-winning commercials director. Best known for his unique cinematic style and groundbreaking special effects, Aveillan has previously helmed short films for Audi, Cartier, Crystals, Louis Vuitton, Samsung, and Swarovski. This will be his feature film directorial debut. Tommy Wirkola, who directed the first installment, is back on as the screenwriter. At this point, its still uncertain whether or not stars Jeremy Renner (Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation) & Gemma Arterton (Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time) will be back for the sequel, but in an earlier interview, producer Adam McKay (Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy) suggested that both stars would be back. The first film managed to gross over $226.3 million worldwide on a $50 million budget and developed cult classic status amongst horror/fantasy fans, especially overseas. What do you guys think?...

Hansel & Gretel 2: Witch Hunters has got its director ready for filming.
Bruno Aveillan, who has a background primarily in directing commercials, will be picking up the breadcrumb trail from Tommy Wirkola who helmed the first film (via Deadline).
Wirkola had been due to return before stepping down, saying it was "a matter of time and priorities", but his script will still be used.
Aveillan has previous experience directing short films for brands including Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Audi and Samsung.
Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton will reprise their roles as the witch-killing siblings.
Their formidable skills will be required once again, as they continue hunting witches, scarred from their first experience fifteen years earlier with one at a gingerbread house.
Gary Sanchez Productions' Adam McKay, Will Ferrell and Kevin Messick are producing the film alongside Beau Flynn and his FlynnPictureCo.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters had some seriously mixed reactions from its viewership. There were horror-comedy fans out there, who absolutely adored it, while on the polar opposite side, many critics called it a flop. Either way, talk about a sequel has been going on since the first film.s release in 2013. A director is now in place to helm Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2, the follow-up film to the 2013 Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton-starring feature adaptation of the enduring fairy tale.
According to The Tracking Board (via Bloody Disgusting), Paramount Pictures has set Bruno Aveillan to helm Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2. Oh, public domain, how you make us sick of classic tales. Variety reports that Universal has signed Ann Peacock (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe) to rewrite the script for their Cinderella reimagining, which was previously written by Michael Dougherty (Superman Returns, Trick ‘r Treat); Bruno Aveillan is set to direct. This long-gestating project is not the only Cinderella remake in development, as Disney is working on one of their own, with Mark Romanek set to direct. Plot details for both movies aren’t readily available, but no matter how they try to reimagine it, I would assume the basic outline will be the same as the story you’ve likely heard countless times.
The dueling Cinderella movies is no shock as another fairy tale property, Snow White, has received the same treatment. Relativity Media has a so far untitled Snow White adaptation due out...

Classic fairy tales have captivated children for years on end and who can blame the Hollywood reboot machine for finding this genre of fiction rich in content and potential? This year, we’ve seen Little Red Hiding Hood re-interpreted as Red Riding Hood from Warner Bros Pictures and Snow White is being rebooted by Universal, Relativity, and Disney.
Variety reports that Universal Pictures is also hoping to reboot Cinderella and are in talks with scribe Ann Peacock (The Chronicles of Narnia, First Grader) to write this reimagining of the classic fairy tale. Disney is also developing a Cinderella reboot with director Mark Romanek (Locke & Key, Never Let Me Go).

Last year, Disney bought [5] a pitch for a live-action retelling, to be directed by Mark Romanek from a script by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada). Now we're getting news about a competing project from Universal, one of the players in the great Snow White movie race of 2011. Ann Peacock (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) has been tapped to write a screenplay based on the classic story, with Bruno Aveillan set to helm. Read more after the jump. Peacock is in final talks to rewrite the script, an earlier draft of which was penned by Michael Dougherty (Trick 'r Treat). The film will mark the feature film debut for Aveillan, whose previous work has been mostly in commercials.

The clues are there. Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland made over a billion dollars at the global box office, this year's Red Riding Hood brought a touch of Twilight to the tale, and there are two competing Snow White movies in production.
In addition, Bryan Singer is making a new version of Jack The Giant Killer for Warner Bros, with Nicholas Hoult (Beast in X-Men: First Class) in the title role; Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton will star in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters; and there are a number of Peter Pan films in the pipeline across Tinseltown.
Yes, you guessed it, there's a Hollywood fetish for fairy tales. That's because they are well-known and in the public domain, making them free to adapt without expensive copyright deals.
The latest to emerge is Cinderella, with Variety reporting that Universal is hiring Ann Peacock to rejig a previous draft by Michael Dougherty.
