All Quiet on the Western Front made good on its record number of BAFTA nominations with a major haul of wins at the film awards ceremony on Sunday night.
At London’s Royal Festival Hall, Netflix’s German anti-war epic took the BAFTAs for best film, alongside best adapted screenplay and best director, and hoovered up most of the craft honors for a total of seven gongs (a BAFTA record for a film not in the English language).
Away from the Western Front, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin won four awards, including half the performance honors, with Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan landing supporting wins. Elsewhere, Austin Butler won leading actor for Elvis, and Cate Blanchett leading actress for Tar.
As had largely been expected, Richard E. Grant was a delightfully upbeat and uncontroversial host, with no political jokes or any jibes aimed at the guests (although he did reference Will Smith,...

In addition to vintage-inspired pieces that look like they could be pulled off the backs of the film’s star-studded cast, the lineup is also rich in Dadaist spirit, which is a defining feature in the film. “There was one time we had lightning near us, and if the film industry, if there’s lightning within a certain amount of miles you have to shut down your electricity,” recalls “Amsterdam” hair department head Lori McCoy Bell. “So all the lights went out and [director David O. Russell] is yelling, ‘Get the flashlights! We’re gonna shoot in the dark! We’re gonna shoot in the dark! More blood, more blood!’ Everyone had flashlights. It didn’t matter that we didn’t have lights. It’s that kind of crazy chaos that brings something remarkable to the screen.” Watch our interview with Bell, co-hair department head Adruitha Lee and makeup department head Nana Fischer above.

“I don’t think I’m daunted by period pieces, I’m intrigued by them,” says J.R. Hawbaker in our recent webchat about her costume designs in David O. Russell‘s latest film “Amsterdam.” “People in history are just us in different time periods. I love finding the humanism and the character that we all are now in every period in history.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

“Fargo” showrunner Noah Hawley lives and works in Austin, Texas, so even before the Covid-19 pandemic pushed people to work from home, he was already doing that. “On some level, my life was set up for this better than other people,” he says.
“I had a writers’ room in L.A., so the first and third week of the month I was Zooming into it already from here.” His 500-square-foot bungalow, built separately from his house, is where he wrote “probably all of [‘Fargo’] Season 4,” as well as his upcoming novel “Anthem.”
He also has an editing bay in the space. When the pandemic hit, he realized he’d be taking meetings and attending virtual events and award shows, in addition to working on the show there, so he spruced things up a little bit.

If you thought Noah Hawley’s shows could be ambiguous, just imagine how his crew felt when the “Fargo” showrunner gave them a simple yet mysterious direction before shooting Season 4: “Follow the yellow brick road.”
“We didn’t really know what that meant back in prep,” said J.R. Hawbaker, the series’ costume designer. “We were like, ‘Ok, we’ve got the yellow brick road coming, we don’t really know where we’re going, but we’re going to follow Noah — he will get us there.'”

“That may actually be the longest piece of music I’ve ever written,” reveals composer Jeff Russo about the nearly 12-minute track that he composed for the season four premiere of FX’s Fargo. Set in Kansas City in 1950, the fourth installment of the anthology series used Russo’s “opus” to tell the backstory of 50 years of mob family warfare, and Russo drew on the city’s “jazz and blues flare” to situate the audience in the show’s particular time and place. Watch our exclusive video interview with Russo above.
The process of creating the score for that epic opening sequence took months, and Russo began long before showrunner Noah Hawley began shooting. “Once I read Noah’s work, I’m always inspired to just start going,” Russo says, because Hawley’s “scripts are so visually evocative that my imagination just starts to go.” Russo also discusses working on...

For costume designer J.R. Hawbaker, season four of “Fargo” “was a very detailed process starting with [showrunner Noah Hawley], and then every single item of clothing that went on these actors we discussed in the fitting room together: why they were wearing it, maybe what the colors were making them feel, all the little details.” With a cast this big, “the inspiration just came with who was coming to us.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Hawbaker above.
This season of “Fargo” explored a war between rival gangs in 1950 Kansas City with a large ensemble of characters played by Chris Rock, Jason Schwartzman, Jessie Buckley, Glynn Turman, Ben Whishaw, and many more. To distinguish them from one another, Hawley hoped to avoid a homogeneous, “sepia-toned sea of fedoras in a 1950s film … They’re definitely in two warring gangs, but they should all have very individualized looks.”

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “The Terror: Infamy” Episode 6, “Taizo.”]
Monday’s episode of “The Terror: Infamy” finally tells the backstory of the ghost known as Yuko (Kiki Sukezane), who has been haunting Chester (Derek Mio), his friends, and his family during WWII. It turns out that in 1919, Yuko traveled to Terminal Island for an arranged marriage to Hideo Furuya (Eiji Inoue), but when she reveals she’s already pregnant by another man, he casts her out. Unable to care for her baby boy properly, she gives Taizo — now the grown-up Chester — away and kills herself by leaping off a bridge. The tragic circumstances surrounding her death creates an onnen, or a wild hunger, in her as she becomes the unsatisfied spirit known as the yurei.
While Yuko’s origin story explains why she’s been sticking around after her death, hints of her state of mind have been present from the start… in her clothing. Costume designer J.R. Hawbaker...
