Ross McDonnell, an Irish filmmaker known for his Emmy-winning cinematography on “The Trade,” has died, his family confirmed more than a week after his body was reportedly found on a New York City beach. He was 44.
McDonnell died “unexpectedly” on Nov. 5, according to a notice on Rip.ie. NBC News reported Monday that the “remains appeared to be of filmmaker Ross McDonnell.”
The police received a 911 call on Nov. 17 about a torso with human legs attached found lying in the sand at Queens’ Breezy Point Beach. McDonnell disappeared earlier this month and was last seen on Nov. 4 leaving his apartment in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn on his bicycle — which was later discovered locked at Fort Tilden Beach in Queens on the Rockaway Peninsula next to Breezy Point.
The cause of death will be determined by the New York City medical examiner’s office. NBC’s sources reported that no foul play is suspected,...

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
Hop – Russell Brand, James Marsden, Elizabeth Perkins
Insidious – Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Ty Simpkins
Source Code – Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga
Movie of the Week
Source Code
The Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga
The Plot: A soldier (Gyllenhaal) wakes up in the body of an unknown commuter and is forced to live and relive a harrowing train bombing until he can determine who is responsible for it.
The Buzz: Source Code looks to be a Quantum Leap meets Groundhog Day sci-fi action romp. 35 seconds into the film’s trailer, I half expected Jake Gyllenhaal to utter, “oh boy.” He instead exclaims, “no, no, no, no,” as if to echo my thoughts exactly — I don’t want to see Gyllenhaal act the same “stop the terrorist on the train” scene, over and over and over again.
I have a strong feeling that this...

"The Resident" (2011)
Directed by Antti Jokinen
Released by Image Entertainment
This actually isn't the first time Hilary Swank has seen one of her films go direct to DVD after the films "Red Dust" and "Birds of America" suffered the same fate, but surely there was more riding on this horror film from the resurgent Hammer Films about a recently separated doctor who learns her Brooklyn loft isn't quite as wonderful as she thought it would be. "Secretary" screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson co-wrote this film, which co-stars Christopher Lee, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Lee Pace.
"The Mikado" (1939)
Directed by Victor Schertzinger
Released by Criterion Collection
"Topsy-Turvy" (1999)
Directed by Mike Leigh
Released by Criterion Collection
Sold separately, Criterion is making no secret of trying to appeal to Gilbert and Sullivan fanatics with special editions of "The Mikado," a straight-up adaptation of the musical duo's most famous opera, and Mike Leigh's "Topsy-Turvy,...

- Following my top ten Tiff list of titles available piece that I published a couples of hours back, Tiff released the lengthy list of titles that are looking for deals. Among those that I didn't mention in my top ten but could have easily have been there is the omission of Micmacs à tire-larigot (I wasn't sure if Warner Bros. only had domestic rights for France and not world rights), and titles such as Neil Jordan's Ondine, Atom Egoyan's Chloe, Oliver Parker's Dorian Gray, Aaron Schneider's Get Low, Derrick Borte's The Joneses and Michael J. Bassett's Solomon Kane should be generating key interest from the buyers as well. Without further ado, here is the list. L’Affaire Farewell Christian Carion, France Ahead of Time Bob Richman, USA The Angel Margreth Olin, Norway/Sweden/Finland The Art of the Steal Don Argott, USA Baaria Giuseppe Tornatore,

'Colony' the Irish documentary from directors Carter Gunn & Ross McDonnell, which explores the unexplainable phenomenon of Colony Collapse Disorder which has left landscapes of empty beehives all across America, has been chosen to be screened in the 'Real to Reel' Category at the 34th International Toronto Film Festival in September. Produced by Morgan Bushe and Macdara Kelleher for Fastnet Films, 'Colony' documents a time of unprecedented crisis in the world of the honeybee through the eyes of both veteran beekeeper, David Mendes, and Lance and Victor Seppi, two young brothers getting into beekeeping when most are getting out. As Mendes tries to save the nation's collapsing hives, the Seppi's try to keep their business alive amidst a collapsing economy.

- Count me in for about covering about half the doc offerings at Tiff this year. Kudos to Thom Powers for putting together a stellar line-up of offerings from some top names in the documentary filmmaking world and for subject matters that certainly make this cat curious. Seventeen doc films (nine world preems) have been added to the festival, but still no mention of Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story, while The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights (directed by Emmett Malloy - an habitual for band docs) is confirmed as a Vanguard Section selection. Worth checking out is Aj Schnack's post announcement interview Powers who explains how some titles with unfamiliar names got into the fest. Here is the list of docs worth seeking out in T.O.
