There’s a moment in one of comedian Simon Amstell’s stand up shows where he recounts a conversation he once had with the executive producer of Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks. Trading on the commonly held opinion that Hollyoaks is “rubbish”, Amstell enquired as to why the producer didn’t try to make it better. The answer came that they did make it better, but people stopped watching.

Actress Gemma Atkinson first came to prominence during a five year stint as Lisa Hunter on the soap opera Hollyoaks. Since leaving the show, Gemma has cemented her reputation as an actress by appearing in the wildly popular stage version of Calendar Girls as well as taking on a variety of different roles in TV dramas and films. Her huge popularity earned her a spot on the TV show “I’m a Celebrity get me out of Here,” in which she came fifth. Earlier this year, Gemma took the decision to return to serious drama and decided to accept a role on the BBC’s long running medical drama Casualty. Kieran Kinsella recently had the opportunity to speak with Gemma Atkinson about the new role and her other upcoming projects.
