If you came of age reading comics in the 80’s or afterward, Chris Claremont is a person who needs no introduction. Arguably, the most successful mainstream comic writer of all time, Chris wrote the singular team comic for a generation of readers and set the template for a myriad of other media featuring the world’s most Merry Mutants.
His work on such Marvel Comics as X-men, New Mutants and Wolverine didn’t just set the standard for super hero development and angst in its era. No, Chris’ impact extends to audiences that have never read one of his comics, making a way for Storm, Cyclops, Wolverine and Kitty Pryde to make their mark across the world and maybe across the Universe.
We can only hope.

Neil Gaiman fans are committed to supporting his work, but even they may have trouble with “Neil Gaiman: Dream Dangerously,” the limp new documentary by Patrick Meaney currently available on Vimeo on Demand. How a feature on one of our greatest living fantasy authors could be so mundane is a mystery. Whether it’s because Meaney lacks his subject’s sweeping imagination, or Gaiman’s introverted nature was simply too difficult to surmount, “Dream Dangerously” comes up short.
You couldn’t find a more fascinating pop culture figure to receive this treatment: Gaiman is a British novelist best known for the comic book series “The Sandman,” a groundbreaking fantasy comic about the world of dreams, which is generally believed to have ushered in the genre of contemporary dark fantasy. After his breakout years in the eighties, Gaiman successfully transitioned from comics to novels with hits like “Stardust,” “American Gods,” “Coraline,...

Few comic book writers have had the impact on the industry that Chris Claremont enjoyed. From 1975 through 1991, he was the core writer on Marvel’s X-Men, building the title up from obscurity to become the most successful franchise in the business at the time. Released online Tuesday via Vimeo on Demand, a new documentary, Comics in Focus: Chris Claremont’s X-Men, takes a look at his groundbreaking work and success. “More than any other comic book characters, the X-Men’s popularity is due entirely to the effort of one writer,” director Patrick Meaney — who has directed

As the legend goes, twenty one years ago this month, in a ballsy power move that would forever change comics, comic book all stars Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefeld, Jim Lee, Marc Silvestri, Erik Larsen, Whilce Portacio, and Jim Valentino left Marvel Comics to form their own comic book publishing company called Image. As a response to years of creator mistreatment at the time and given maybe six months to live, twenty years later Image Comics continues to influence mainstream comics and popular culture to this very day.
Hot documentary The Image Revolution tells the story of Image Comics, from its founders’ work at Marvel, through Image’s early days, the ups and downs of the ’90s, and the publisher’s new generation of properties like The Walking Dead.
The Image Revolution is an absolute Must Watch for comic book fans, and in my opinion one of the best documentaries of the year.

Sequart Research & Literacy Organization is proud to announce the release of its newest book of comics analysis, Shot in the Face: A Savage Journey to the Heart of Transmetropolitan, which is edited by Chad Nevett.
Published in 1997-2002, Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson’s Transmetropolitan became famous for its foul-mouthed protagonist, Spider Jerusalem, and his “filthy assistants.” But it’s also a long-form comics masterpiece, a sci-fi comic that succeeded despite the odds, and an examination of journalism and politics — and how they intersect (or fail to do so). This book explores all these topics and more, from multiple points of view. It also includes interviews with both Ellis and Robertson.
Contributors include Greg Burgas, Johanna Draper Carlson, Julian Darius, Sara K. Ellis, Ryan K. Lindsay, Patrick Meaney, Jason Michelitch, Chris Murphy, Chad Nevett, Kevin Thurman, Brett Williams, and Sean Witzke.
The book sports a cover by Kevin Colden and runs 164 pages.

Warren Ellis: Captured Ghosts
Director: Patrick Meaney | Director of photography: Jordan Rennert
“Warren Ellis sees the future. He is a comic book writer and cyberpunk philosopher living on the edge of tomorrow. He speaks to a cult audience of artists, journalists, scientists and fans who hail him as Internet Jesus.
The film features the most extensive interview Ellis has ever given, and spans his life, from his first memory watching the moon landing as a child, to his recent cross-media success with the film adaptation of Red. Along the way, Ellis’s acerbic wit and core belief in humanity comes across like never before.
Complimenting Ellis’s own words are interviews with his artistic collaborators, friends and admirers from across all media, including actress Helen Mirren, Director Joss Whedon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer), comedian Patton Oswalt, Adult Film Star Stoya, Musician Claudio Sanchez (of Coheed and Cambria), comics writers Matt Fraction and Antony Johnston,...

Alan Moore and David Lloyd will contribute to Occupy Comics' anthology. The collection of stories from more than 50 creators is inspired by the current Occupy Wall Street protests. Moore recently spoke out against fellow creator Frank Miller's verbal attack on the protesters. "It's fair to say that Alan Moore and David Lloyd are unofficial godfathers of the current protest movement," Occupy Comics organiser Matt Pizzolo told Wired.com. "It's really amazing to see two creatives whose work was inspiring to street protesters join a creative project that is inspired by the street protesters. It's a pretty virtuous cycle." Moore will write a prose piece for the anthology, which is being funded through Kickstarter. A 'making of' documentary is also being produced by Patrick Meaney, the director (more)...

If you need $100 million to make a CGI-heavy action film, the project-funding website Kickstarter should definitely not be the first place you look. However, Kickstarter is becoming a hot spot to hunt down dollars for more modest indie projects, and comics-related documentary pitches in particular are becoming more and more common.
Five such comics documentaries have met their funding needs, and the dollar amounts they've been able to raise are impressive. Their topics range from historical investigations into censorship to massive interview compilations looking at what current creators grew up reading and what goes on behind the industry's closed doors.

The Brisbane Underground Film Festival is a new, scrappy little fest on the scene that will screen several underground hits for three nights on Oct. 13-15 at the Visy Theatre in Brisbane, Australia.
On the narrative film front, there’s two mind-blowing American films: Zach Clark‘s wild ’90s indie film throwback comedy Vacation!, about four women who take a disastrous beach holiday; and Usama Alshaibi‘s über-trippy Profane, a moving and powerful portrait of a Muslim sex worker trying to regain her faith in Chicago. Plus, there’s Jason Eisener‘s bloody cult flick Hobo With a Shotgun and Terry McMahon’s Charlie Casanova.
On the documentary front, the fest will open the Le Tigre tour film Who Took the Bomp? by Kerthy Fix; then screen festival circuit hits Grant Morrison: Talking With Gods by Patrick Meaney and Shut Up Little Man! by Matthew Bate.

The programme for this year's Graphic Festival, taking place at the Sydney Opera House, includes a screening of Patrick Meaney's documentary Talking With Gods about comic book writer and chaos magician Grant Morrison. Co-curator of Graphic, Jordan Verzar, saw the opportunity to screen Talking With Gods at the festival as too good to pass up. "I chose it because not only do I think he's [Morrison] a great comic artist, I think he's an interesting individual. The fact that Patrick put together a documentary that will let you explore the mind of this incredibly talented writer has got to be a great thing," he says laughing.

Yesterday we got a look at the San Diego Comic-Con 2010 schedule for Wednesday and Thursday of the show, and today the Friday schedule has landed online.
You can read the whole Friday lineup at the Comic-Con website, but heed this warning: It's intimidating, to say the least.
I've sifted through it to find some of the events you might be particularly interested from the worlds of comics, movies, television, games, and anything else that seemed appropriately awesome. Feel free to chime in via the comment section with the panels, events, and other fun stuff you want to check out Friday.
We're big fans of "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" animated series here at Splash Page HQ, and the added bonus of a "Young Justice" premiere has this one underlined on our Comic-Con schedule:
