Comic book writer, editor, and raconteur Clifford Meth took to Kickstarter to fund the publication of Comic Book Babylon, a collection of essays, stories, and interviews drawn from the almost ten years worth of columns he had written for various comic book news sites across the Internet, including ComicMix itself. Promising an introduction by Stan Lee and illustrations by noted comic artist/political crackpot Michael Netzer, Comic Book Babylon almost quintupled its original funding goal with $11,219 in pledges. Last week, Meth delivered with the release of Comic Book Babylon, published in print by Meth’s own Aardwolf Publishing or digitally through the Amazon Kindle store.
Unfortunately, the book itself isn’t quite as lofty as its funding might make it out to be: Where Sean Howe’s Marvel Comics: The Untold Story aimed for academic detachment and scholarly consideration for both sides of every story, Meth wears his personal...

The Panel: 30th Anniversary of Love and Rockets featuring brothers Gilbert, Jaime, and Mario Hernandez, moderated by their longtime publisher, Fantagraphic Books’ Gary Groth.
The Big Revelations: In a deal with Comixology, Fantagraphic will finally begin to release 30 years of Love and Rockets digitally. Comic-Con surprised Mario with an Inkpot Award to match the ones previously granted to his more prolific brothers. Jaime told the crowd that Alan Moore was quite taken with the nine-panel grid that he used throughout his Locas story “100 Rooms” and subsequently adopted it for Watchmen. Gilbert named Palomar’s villain, Howard Miller, after fellow cartoonists Howard Chaykin and Frank Miller.

Shame (20th Century Fox) Director Steve McQueen’s harrowing portrait of a Manhattan sex addict (Michael Fassbender, in the year’s most riveting performance) whose psyche goes into overload when his equally-troubled sister (Carey Mulligan) visits unexpectedly. Exquisitely-made on every level, save for the screenplay, which makes its point after about thirty minutes. While it tries hard to be a modern-day Last Tango in Paris, this fatal flaw makes it fall somewhat short. The much- ballyhooed sex scenes and frontal nudity are the least-interesting things about the film, incidentally, which is still a must-see for discriminating adults who seek out challenging material. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.
Being John Malkovich (Criterion) Spike Jonze’s madcap film of Charlie Kaufman’s script, regarding a socially-disenfranchised puppeteer (John Cusack) who finds a portal into the mind of actor...

Pretty much the comic book Oscars, the 2012 nominations for the Eisner awards have been announced. There is quite are large showing from Marvel in the superhero department, not so much from DC. Surprising, considering the company’s high profile New 52 relaunch. Save for Jeff Lemire’s nomination for Best Writer, most of DC’s nomination are pre-relaunch, or from their Vertigo imprint which has been left untouched by the New 52. The nominations are usually as controversial as the Oscars, with books and whole companies being left out, much to fans, sometimes, anger and confusion.
A full list of the nominations are below, courtesy of Bleeding Cool, and the award will take place at this years San Diego Comic Con.

As many of you may already know, each and every year, awards distributed at San Diego Comic Con to a few select (and noteworthy) nominees who are chosen by retailers and professionals in the comic book industry. The ceremony is better known as the Eisner Awards which is now heading into its 24th year with some great talent in the running. One of the most loved titles in this year’s nominee list is Marvel’s Daredevil, picking up 6 nominations that include Best Continuing Series, Best Single Issue, Best Writer (Mark Waid), Best Cover Artist (Marcos Martin), and Best Penciller/Inker Team Marcos Martin, and Paolo Rivera/Joe Rivera). DC also scored some decent recognition with their iZombie Vertigo series, gathering 3 nominations (Cover Art, Coloring, Inker/Penciller) for the creative team.

Graphic Novels publisher Campfire is celebrating after winning two awards at Comic Con India.
The 2012 convention - officially the 2nd Annual Indian Comic Con - was held in New Delhi from February 17 to 19, a day longer than 2011's inaugural event.
This time it also introduced an awards ceremony for publishers, artists and writers from the local comics industry.
Campfire's biographical title Nelson Mandela: The Unconquerable Soul won the top prize of Best Graphic Novel.
Author Lewis Helfand was not able to attend but recorded a message saying: "I think a lot of us grew up wanting to create comic books and to have the chance to not only create comics, and create books that we believe in, but to have people respond to our work in such a positive way, is absolutely amazing."
Sankha Banerjee, who produced the art for the book, collected the prize.

Early this week we heard about General Motors and a possible plan for the car company to bankroll Warner Bros. new take on Cannonball Run. But that's not the weirdest film financing plan out there this week. The news now is that Hungary is looking at a tax on porn websites, with the proceeds being funneled back into the regular Hungarian film business. Variety [1] reports on the possible tax, saying that MP Laszlo Simon, a member of the ruling center-right Fidesz party, is one of the prime backers of the plan, but that rival part Lmp is sponsoring the tax, essentially creating bi-partisan support for the plan. There's also another component: a 3% tax on multiplex tickets to aid the country's struggling art-house theaters. Such socialism would never stand in the Us! This reminds me of the pre-internet '90s, when the comic publisher Fantagraphics subsidized its artful comic output via...

Inevitably, when discussing the best way to market comics to a larger, non-indoctrinated audience, someone will suggest “good writing and art” as the sure-fire remedy.
The mirror image of this is accusing publishers of employing “cheap publicity stunts.” I was on the receiving end of this charge from Gary Groth of The Comics Journal when he was questioned about the Death of Superman in USA Today. Naturally, I was miffed, because I thought my salary proved I was not cheap.
(I’m sure that’s the occasion when the most people ever thought about The Comics Journal.)
The premise, in any case, is incorrect. Or, rather, it should be. In publishing, the editorial department should decide what to acquire (or, in the case of comics and other work-for-hire situations, solicit) and the marketing departments (which include publicity) should promote this material to the people who would most enjoy it.
It never works like this.
