To mark the release of Archive, out now, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on Blu-ray.
A roboticist, George Almore, is on the verge of a breakthrough. Stationed at a remote, secret facility, he has been working on a model that is a true, human equivalent android. His latest prototype, J3, is almost complete.
Development of J3 has been achieved through two earlier prototypes, J1 and J2. Each prototype is an increasingly advanced version of his wife, Jules, who died in a brutal car crash. Driven by love for Jules, George has secretly skewed the focus of his work: developing the robots towards the goal of creating a simulacra of Jules.
As his work approaches its final and riskiest stages, external forces threaten to discover and shutdown his facility while the introduction of the highly advanced J3 collapses the delicate ‘family’ balance inside the facility.

To celebrate the UK release of Archive, new the sci-fi drama from writer/director Gavin Rothery, we sat down with the filmmaker and his two leads to delve deeper into his world of artificial intelligence.
Set in 2038, Archive tells the story of George Almore (Theo James) who is working on a true human-equivalent AI. His latest prototype is almost ready and this sensitive final phase is also the riskiest. Especially as he has a goal that must be hidden at all costs: being reunited with his dead wife.
Part Ex_Machina, part Blade Runner and part Her, Archive deals with the subjects of the afterlife, death, love and man vs machine in a touching and dynamic way that feels fresh and exciting. James and Martin tells us why Rothery’s story spoke to them, why they felt compelled to be part of it and why the film feels different to what you have seen before.

A lonely computer scientist in the year 2038 secretly works on an android version of his wife who died in a car crash – is it romantic, or something more sinister?
British illustrator and visual-effects director Gavin Rothery makes his feature debut with this artificial intelligence thriller: a tale of love, death and robotics that has some nicely creepy moments. Set in 2038, it centres on lonely computer scientist George Almore (Divergent’s Theo James), who is holed up in a remote research facility in Japan secretly working on an android version of his wife Jules (Stacy Martin); she has died in a car crash. His prototype, J3 (also played by Martin), is his closest yet to the real thing: a highly advanced humanoid with spookily pale skin who looks like she might be the ghost of his dead wife. Poor old J1 and J2, his earlier, clunkier prototypes: they look on bitterly as the newer,...

“Set in 2038, “Archive” convincingly jumbles eras of futurism, as somewhat quaint old-school robotics give way to more uncannily sinuous forms. “Gravity” composer Steven Price’s score, meanwhile, blends sparse strings and glassy synths, reflecting the marriage of human touch and metallic industrial sheen in George’s mad-scientist meddlings.

Theo James has had several rendezvous with genre films the past decade, but his latest sci-fi entry, Gavin Rothery’s Archive, was his most rewarding experience yet. For James, Rothery’s immersive set and attention to detail — including practical robots — made all the difference as far as his performance was concerned.

In “Archive,” an isolated scientist methodically pursues an artificial-intelligence ideal, developing a sequence of human-android beings and recycling their various parts until the ultimate prototype is achieved. In his handsome debut feature, writer-director Gavin Rothery follows a similarly nifty process of assembly and reassembly, repurposing elements from assorted sci-fi successes — a bit of “Ex Machina” here, some stray “Black Mirror” pieces there — to form a fluent, functional one of his particular design. The sleek result, like the scientist’s hi-tech Frankenstein creation, impressively looks and sounds the part, without quite having a soul of its own. That’s enough to make “Archive” a compelling calling card for the British freshman, with the promise of more advanced models to come.
Originally set to premiere at this year’s pandemic-disrupted South By Southwest festival, “Archive” goes on digital release tomorrow Stateside, where it’ll count on fans of former “Divergent” franchise star...

"I waited a long time... and then I saw something." Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for an intriguing indie sci-fi thriller titled Archive, marking the feature directorial debut of concept artist Gavin Rothery. The film is set in 2038 and follows a man working on a true human-equivalent AI. When his wife passes away, he tries to introduce her into the AI machine with unexpected consequences. This stars Theo James, Stacy Martin as his wife - in AI form and as a human, Rhona Mitra, and Toby Jones. It reminds me a bit of the robot sci-fi film I Am Mother about the girl and robot, but this is also something of its own and looks damn good. Better than the average indie sci-fi flick, that's for sure. I really want to see it. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Gavin Rothery's Archive, direct from Vertical's YouTube:...

A grief-stricken spouse left empty and lost by the death of their partner? A company hell-bent on keeping this person from realizing their tragic ambitions? It’s not new ground by any means, but it’s the ground upon which Gavin Rothery‘s sci-fi thriller “Archive” treads.
Featuring Theo James, Stacy Martin, Toby Jones, and Rhona Mitra, Rothery’s tale of love and loss roots its themes in old wisdom: Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

Exclusive: Actor Theo James and producer Andrew D. Corkin are joining forces to produce theatrical and small-screen projects in the UK and U.S. with their new label Untapped.
“While our primary focus is genre and thriller, we are drawn to stories of conflicted humanity that force viewers to question how they would react when faced with real or existential threats,” said James. “These stories are often grounded in truth – literal or allegorical – encouraging us to confront and challenge the assumptions we make about ourselves and the world around us.”
Said Corkin: “We’re excited to solidify our partnership to tell complex, diverse stories across various mediums. Theo and I share a vision for how we want to build stories and worlds that both fit within the current marketplace and look beyond it.”
Already, James and Corkin have several film and TV projects in various stages of development, prep and post.

The Last Man is a dark post-apocalyptic thriller written and directed by Gavin Rothery. The story revolves around a Deep Reserve soldier who wakes up from hibernation to find that the world he knew has been ruined by war. It’s a haunting and tense story that is told through beautifully gritty visuals.
Rothery was part of the production team that worked on Duncan Jones’ Moon, so you’ll see the influence from his work in that in some of the imagery in this short. The production value is solid, and the attention to detail really helps makes the film pop.
I think you’ll like what you see, so make sure to take the time and check it out when you get a chance! After you watch it, let us know what you think!

It was nearing the end of Bafta's Ray Harryhausen 90th birthday tribute at the BFI Southbank last Saturday that special effects makeup maestro Rick Baker took to the stage to offer his praise. For the previous two hours or so, a stunning list of the movie industry's biggest, most innovative and respected names had, in person or via video messages, offered their undying love and gratitude to Harryhausen and his work, all offering incredibly specific tales of when they first encountered his unique contribution to cinema and how greatly it affected them. For Baker, the problem he faced was how could he say anything that had not been already said – even the "we are all children of the Hydra's teeth" line had been used. Twice.

At the end of last year we reported on Duncan Jones’ campaign to get Sam Rockwell an Oscar nomination for his performance in Moon. Since then the petition has received over 3,600 signatures, and has been backed by a host of Hollywood’s great and good.
As the Oscar race begins in earnest, and barely weeks before the nominations are announced for both the BAFTAs and the Oscars, the campaign has just received a welcome boost, in the form of the video, below.
Parodying heart-string-tugging charity adverts perfectly, the video, created by Chris Trevarthen, features many of the people who have been campaigning for Rockwell to win an Oscar, as well as Moon’s concept artist, Gavin Rothery and of course, director Duncan Jones, looking very much like Obi Wan Kenobi.

Chicago – It truly has been a year for science fiction like no other. Think about this for a moment: “Star Trek,” “District 9,” and “Avatar” are all very possible candidates for the Academy Award for Best Picture. The wave of quality genre product has even allowed for one of the best science fiction films of not just the year but the decade to go tragically underrated in Duncan Jones’ spectacular debut “Moon,” now available on Blu-ray and DVD.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0

Rockwell plays Sam Bell, a worker on the other side of the moon in a future where that location happens to be the source of the solution to our energy crisis. Bell mines the source and spends most of his time talking to a robot (voiced by Kevin Spacey) and sending...

With the proliferation of Top Tens and Best Of lists on the internet at this time of year we wanted to try something a little different.
2009 was an important year for the business of cinema; games were changed with the acquiescence of audiences to the notion of 3D, low budgets met with large returns, old franchises spawned reboots and rebakes with varying success, the British film industry remained strong and gave us some bright new stars in our sky.
We asked our writers to come up with an alternative set of awards which would honour those films, directors and actors who made 2009 such an enjoyable year. Strong emotions are rendered in strong language, be warned if words offend.
So, here now, I present to you our awards for 2009 – The Truffles.

“Every one is a moon, and has a dark side which he never shows to anybody”

Duncan Jones is a genius. In bringing his feature debut Moon to the big screen he has made a film that pays graceful homage to such luminaries as Kubrick, Spielberg, and Robert Wise to name a few, and can stand proudly in their company with his beautiful metaphysical movie which is as accomplished in its execution as it is limitless in its ambition.
Jones’s Moon is a unique and intelligent thriller with the twin benefits of an outstanding (and Oscar-worthy turn) by Sam Rockwell and a script which takes familiar sci-fi concepts and draws out a superior narrative without ever relying on the conventions of the genre. It is an incredibly difficult trick to pull off, but as I was watching the film I sat literally breathless in admiration as Jones let the story flow,...

To many first time directors, the pressure of helming their first feature film would have proved impossible to bear.
But to Duncan Jones - director of Moon, and a self-confessed geek - it was like being let loose in a giant toy set.
Jones and his crew worked like demons to get the film made, but a lifetime of sci-fi fandom gave him a sound and deepening affiliation with the genre to draw upon.
