The Big Year has moments where it can almost be a great movie, but fails to live up to the talent of its tremendous cast. Instead, we get a comedy with a couple of laughs and a lot of wasted potential. Inspired by Mark Obmascik's book The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession, the film was directed by David Frankel (Marley & Me and The Devil Wears Prada) with a screenplay by Howard Franklin (Quick Change). Along with the comedic talent of the main three stars Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson, the film has a ton of great cameos and supporting actors . including the legendary John Cleese as the narrator,...

2011 comedy movie The Big Year has some heavy hitters in the laughs department — Steve Martin (Three Amigos), Jack Black (Gulliver’s Travels) and Owen Wilson (Hall Pass) — but failed to wow critics and audiences.
In the film, Martin, Black and Wilson are each facing a mid-life crisis, a work-life crisis and a no-life crisis. Avid bird watchers, they join a contest to spot the rarest birds in North America at a prestigious annual event, but for them, the quest turns into the ultimate competition.
The Big Year also features TV comedians Joel McHale (TV’s Community), Jim Parsons (TV’s The Big Bang Theory) and Rashida Jones (TV’s Parks and Recreation), as well as Angelica Huston (When in Rome), Dianne Weist (TV’s In Treatment), Brian Dennehy (The Next Three Days), Kevin Pollak...

Getting chuffed over a domestic duck? Any self-respecting birdwatching pedant should be horrified by The Big Year
A lot of people think of birdwatching – or "birding", as we usually refer to it – as geeky. I prefer to think of it as an interesting obsession. It can certainly take over your life, as it does for the three main characters in this film: they devote an entire year of their lives – a "big year" – to travelling the length and breadth of North America, competing to spot the greatest number of bird species.
I've read the book on which the film is based: The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession by Mark Obmascik. It's very well-written, with great characterisation; you especially feel for Brad Harris, the character played in the film by Jack Black, who's a working-class guy with less money than the others to spend pursuing his passion.

So this is a real thing: a “big year” is an adventure and a competition among North American birdwatchers to see who can spot the most different individual species of avian in a single January-to-December span. This actually happens, and The Big Year is based on a nonfiction book by journalist Mark Obmascik [Amazon U.S.] [Amazon Canada] [Amazon U.K.] about one actual year during which three very different guys vied for the title of America’s biggest bird nerd. It’s sorta one of those “you can’t make this up” things, and yet screenwriter Howard Franklin (Antitrust) and director David Frankel (Marley & Me) have turned it into a charming little narrative movie that is so amiably ridiculous that you’re sure it must have been invented. Here we meet Brad Harris (Jack Black: Kung Fu Panda 2), a divorced computer programmer; Stu Preissler (Steve Martin: It’s Complicated), an about-to-retire corporate executive with a supportive...

A comedy about bird watching – or ‘birding’, as it’s officially known – is such a random concept that it must surely be one of great mockery of the pastime. But Marley & Me and The Devil Wears Prada director David Frankel’s The Big Year manages to give it a little eccentric charm and grounded purpose, while relying on household comedy old-timers Owen Wilson, Jack Black and Steve Martin to add the feel-good factor.
Based on a non-fiction book by Mark Obmascik, the story follows Brad Harris (Black), a mummy’s boy and It worker who is obsessed with birds of the ornithological kind. His dream is to take a year out and spot as many bird types as possible to win the coveted, annual Big Year, an informal competition dominated by the world’s best birder, Kenny Bostick (Wilson), who finds all kinds of devious ways to put others off...

To celebrate the release of ‘The Big Year’ in cinemas Friday, we’re offering 5 lucky readers the chance to win the book on which the film was based; The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature, and Fowl Obsession, written by Mark Obmascik.
In this comedy for grown-ups, Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson portray three men from different walks of life, each facing unique personal challenges. The one thing they share is an uncommon passion for…bird watching. In the biggest competition of their biggest year, they undertake an unforgettable trek through North America, fall in and out of love, engage in hilarious and bizarre adventures, and form friendships that will last a lifetime. Directed by David Frankel (“Marley and Me,” “The Devil Wears Prada”).

Here's the official trailer for The Big Year, starring Jack Black, Steve Martin and that Wilson bloke :) Inspired by the book by Mark Obmascik, it certainly looks like one of the more intelligent comedies. So if you’re a fan of pie f%^kin and farts, this probably won’t be for you. The movie opens on December 2nd UK & Ireland. Our American friends have already had this since October 14th and the movie has been got a fairly lukewarm reception to say the least, with a 40% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Maybe pie f$%kin and farts are the way to go. Anyways.. What do Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson have in common? Birdwatching? Nope. But all three star in "The Big Year" -- a comedy that unfolds against the backdrop of a bird-watching competition.
The movie opened eighth in theaters on Friday (Oct. 14), but is generating plenty of Internet buzz thanks to its all-star triumvirate. So is it worth watching? We decided to check a few of our go-to spots to get a quick take on the film which, we feel duty-bound to report, has a 39 percent Rotten Tomatoes critic score, despite being "liked" by 65 percent of alleged viewers.
The three leads land a few laughs, but the fine cast and Frankel--for all his sweeping shots and soaring music--can't get any lift on the material, which is grounded by tedium and repetition. -- Ei

For those of us who are not predisposed to spend hours of our time spying on birds in a forest, birding aficionados can seem like an awfully strange lot. That’s not to suggest that their hobby isn’t understandable. After all, the satisfaction in finding a rare bird seems similar to the sense of accomplishment one feels upon finishing a difficult puzzle, or upon finally locating Waldo. Still, anyone who’s ever accompanied a birder on his mission knows that once the object of prey is spotted there will be a long, frenzied staring and photographic session, with any slight movement met with enthusiastic “oohs” and “aahs.” If you’re not of the niche birder community, this is an insufferable experience. So it’s hard to fathom why director David Frankel and screenwriter Howard Franklin imagined anyone would be especially entertained by a movie about it. Yet, somehow someone though the world needed a movie about...

Does this comedy about bird watching take flight, or is it a lame duck? Here's Ron's review of The Big Year, starring Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson...
Do you know anything about birding? You see, birding is the term used by people who actually engage in bird watching, but they call it birding because I guess the watching makes it too voyeuristic. There’s a dedicated community of birders, but the most hardcore of them undertake something called a 'big year.'
Basically, you spend a year (and a fortune) to travel around the country and see as many birds as you possibly can in 365 days. Kenny Bostick (Owen Wilson) is the top birder in the world, and he’s got the record to beat of 732 birds in a year.
However, he’s got competition. Brad Harris (Jack Black) is a divorced slacker whose only love (and only...

The Big Year is a star-driven comedy, led by Steve Martin, Owen Wilson, and Jack Black, with an unusual premise about three dedicated “birders” and their competitive attempt to track as many species as possible during a calendar year. But the film itself qualifies as a rara avis: a benign, good-hearted movie about three disparate characters’ search for happiness. The fact that it’s rated PG, and yet is intended for adult audiences, should tell you something about— —the movie’s nature. Howard Franklin’s screenplay, inspired by Mark Obmascik’s book, dodges stereotypes and cheap gags as it paints a picture of three…...

It is, perhaps, too unkind to call "The Big Year" the perfect film to screen on a trans-oceanic plane flight whose compliment of passengers is made up solely of Aarp Members. But we can think of no words of praise less slight and no words of condemnation more heated, so there it is. Inspired roughly by Mark Obmascik's non-fiction book of the same name, three fictional characters are our guides through the biggest event in American birdwatching, the annual competition to see the most North American birds in a year. Funnymen Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson are a trio of birders looking for the rarest species on Earth and finding big laughs in "The Big Year."
Based on the book "The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession" by Mark Obmascik, the comedy follows three men at a crossroads in their lives who wind up competing with each other, in what some would call the trivial pursuit of viewing as many different kinds of birds as possible through binoculars. After many trials and errors, they wind up discovering something even rarer: friendship. Or do they?

2. Stu and Brad Scare Kenny. Owen Wilson pulls the ol' switcheroo on his fine feathered friends.

Who knew the world of bird watching was so competitive? Three friendly rivals embark on a life-changing adventure when they decide to take part in the Big Year - an annual, unofficial bird-watching competition aimed at spotting the highest number of species. For Stu (Steve Martin), Brad (Jack Black) and sharp-tongued, untrustworthy Kenny (Owen Wilson), the chance to break out of their staid routines and take part in a transformative year is too good to pass up.
Based on the best-selling novel by Mark Obmascik and directed by Howard Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada, Marley and Me), The Big Year finds three men at different crossroads in their lives and in need of a change and the opportunity to be deemed the birder gets them excited in a way they haven't experienced in too long. The Big Year has such an overstuffed comedic cast that it's a shock to realize how modest and unconcerned with generating broad laughs it is. Directed by David Frankel (of The Devil Wears Prada and Marley & Me), produced by Ben Stiller and adapted from a book by former Denver Post reporter Mark Obmascik, The Big Year is only really a comedy in that it's tonally light and doesn't ever firmly commit in another direction. Mostly, it's an earnest showcase for the subculture and annual circuit of competitive bird watching -- the preferred term for the true devotees, apparently, is "birding" -- in which the hardcore travel around the country hoping for sightings of as many species as possible, some keeping track (honor system only!) and submitting their final count to the North American Big Year contest.

All evidence suggests that Steve Martin contracted the comedy-suppressing disease that explains so much about his later career sometime between the ambitious early-1991 film L.A. Story and the Christmas 1991 release Father Of The Bride, an uninspired remake of the Vincente Minnelli classic that heavily features the telltale symptom of Martin’s Concerned-Dad Face. Martin fights his way back to health every once in a while, and until now, his condition hasn’t seemed infectious. But in The Big Year, a fictionalized adaptation of Mark Obmascik’s non-fiction book of the same name, co-stars Owen Wilson and Jack Black ...

Trying to follow up the one-two punch of The Devil Wears Prada and Marley & Me must not have been an easy task for director David Frankel, but when you have two back-to-back mega-hits like those, it might not seem like that unconventional a decision to finally make a long-time passion project. Loosely based on Mark Obmascik's novel "The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession," The Big Year stars Jack Black, Owen Wilson and Steve Martin as avid birdwatchers from different walks of life who go on a year-long competition to see who could spot the most birds of different varieties. The competition gets fierce as it takes the three of them all across the country, friendships are formed and broken, and if you don't walk out of the movie knowing at least...

I added The Big Year, an adaptation of Mark Obmascik's 1998 book "The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession," to the database back in March 2010. Since then I had pretty much forgotten about it entirely until Fox sent out a first image from the film promoting the upcoming October 14 release and offering the following synopsis: Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson are at a crossroads -- one is experiencing a mid-life crisis, another a late-life crisis, and the third, a far from ordinary no-life crisis. I still can’t remember the last time Steve Martin made me laugh. That being said, here’s a trailer for The Big Year, a new comedy starring Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson…still nothing.
Jim Parsons from The Big Bang Theory is in the movie, blink and you’ll miss him in the trailer but there’s a change he will steal whatever scenes he’s in, so there’s that to look forward to. The film is an adaptation of Mark Obmascik’s 1998 book The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession [see]. It tells the story of “three men who try to outdo each other in a bird-watching competition to spot the rarest birds in North America’.

Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson starring in a comedy about bird watchers who compete with each other to spot the rarest bird? I was sold before I even watched the first trailer for The Big Year. Then I watched the trailer... and now, not so much. If you're wondering how a funny cast and quirky premise could be watered down to such boring, bland humour, just take a look at the director's previous credits: David Frankel is the man who gave us The Devil Wears Prada and Marley & Me. The Big Year is clearly being aimed at an older crowd, but a part of me still hopes that this trailer is not a true indication of what the movie has to offer. It's based on a book by Mark Obmascik and the screenplay was written by Howard Franklin (The Man Who Knew Too Little, Quick Change). With a...

The Mark Obmascik book that 'The Big Year' is based on tells the story of the Big Year, an annual competition that finds bird watchers spanning the globe to identify the most species of birds. You'd be forgiven for not realizing that after watching the new trailer for 'The Big Year,' though, since it paints the Steve Martin/Jack Black/Owen Wilson-led comedy as something like 'The Bucket List' for younger dudes. (Or 'Tropic Thunder' with a PG-13 friendly comedy triptych.) Click through to watch.

If you like your studio comedies big and broad, David Frankel is your man. The latest film from the Marley & Me director looks to continue his streak as Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson team up to go on a globetrotting adventure. Based on Mark Obmascik‘s 1998 novel The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession and adapted by Howard Franklin there is only a brief mention of what is said to be “a competitive bird-watching competition tournament.”
It is apparent in the poster and half the trailer shots our men have bird-gazing binoculars around their neck, but is peculiar how 20th Century Fox didn’t include any mention of the actual plot here. I’m sorry Kes and Hitchcock, but I guess birds aren’t as big of a draw as I imagined. Check out the trailer below via Apple for the film also starring Brian Dennehy,...

This is your first look photo of Owen Wilson, Steve Martin, and Jack Black on the set of their next film The Big Year. The Big Year follows the story of three obsessive bird watchers ("Needs more 'splosions" -Michael Bay). I'm not going to lie, the quirk factor alone is enough to intrigue me to see this film. Then you talk about the rest of the cast- Rosemund Pike, Jim Parsons, Joel McHale, Anjelica Houston, and Rashida Jones- and I'll pretty much get in line right now.
The film is based on the book of the same title written by Mark Obmascik.

The Devil Wears Prada and Marley & Me director David Frankel has a new comedy coming out later this year that centers around an energetic subculture: bird watchers. Ok, perhaps not so energetic. The Big Year stars Owen Wilson, Steve Martin and Jack Black, all of whom are competing in an annual bird-watching event. As a drama it might not be riveting stuff, but as a comedy there's potential. See the first full image of the three leads below. [1] The Big Year has a solid supporting cast: Jim Parsons, Rosamund Pike, Rashida Jones, Joel McHale, and Anjelica Huston. Howard Franklin (Someone to Watch Over Me, The Man Who Knew Too Little) adapted the script from Mark Obmascik's 2004 book The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature, and Fowl Obsession. Fox will open the film on October 14. Three avid bird watchers compete to spot the rarest birds in North America at a prestigious annual event.

Twentieth Century Fox execs today muscled their 2011 release schedule. First and foremost the studio's big tentpole Rise Of The Apes moves from June 24th to November 23rd because there's a Thanksgiving family film overload. This Planet Of The Apes origins story about genetic engineering is considered big enough to be informally nicknamed "Apetar" The studio has enough faith in Jim Carrey's Mr. Popper's Penguins to move this family film featuring Jim Carrey (back doing what his fans want him to do) from August 12th to the start of the summer on June 17th. The Big Year, about the Bird-Watching Men Of North America (inspired by the book “The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession” by Mark Obmascik) and starring Jack Black, Steve Martin, and Owen Wilson gets scheduled for October 14th. The Beaver
Opens: March 23rd 2011
Cast: Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Anton Yelchin, Jennifer Lawrence
Director: Jodie Foster
Summary: A depressed toy company CEO with a failed marriage starts to wear a beaver puppet on his hand as a form of therapy, much to the initial bemusement of his family. He soon begins talking only through the character.
Analysis: This time last year, excitement was quietly brewing for "The Beaver". Gibson's drunken tirade a few years before hand wasn't forgotten, but enough time had passed that this looked to be the year of a potential comeback for the actor.
The thriller remake "Edge of Darkness" and this were his first on screen roles in ten years, 'Beaver' is also his "Maverick" co-star Foster's return to the director's chair fifteen years after her last feature. The script topped the 2008 Black List and scored rave reviews for its blend of sophisticated humor and sad pathos,...
