Production on MaXXXine, the sequel to director Ti West‘s films Pearl (watch it Here) and X (watch that one at This Link), wrapped way back in May of 2023, and just last month we heard that it has earned an R rating for strong violence, gore, sexual content, graphic nudity, language and drug use as it heads toward its July 5th theatrical release date. With that date just two months away, last week, USA Today unveiled a new image from the film that dropped Mia Goth into an ’80s party scene:
Not to be outdone, Entertainment Weekly, in their annual Summer Movie Preview, has also dropped a bunch of new pics for the movie, revealing our first looks at Goth’s co-stars, including a very bloody Kevin Bacon, Yellowjackets star (and horror super fan) Sophie Thatcher, and Elizabeth Debicki. MaXXXine has earned an R for strong violence, gore, sexual content, graphic nudity, language and drug use. Sounds like a good time at the movies to me!

The film has the following synopsis: In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break.

Look out Hollywood! Maxine Minx has come to town to be a star, and heaven help those who get in her way. Including, presumably, a mysterious killer who has designs on her.
A24 has finally dropped the trailer for Maxxxine, the final nail in the proverbial coffin of its hit and acclaimed X horror trilogy from filmmaker Ti West.
The previous two installments, X and its prequel Pearl, proved to be a tour de force showcase for star Mia Goth when they were released back to back in 2022 and re-established West as a buzzy filmmaker in the horror community.
Maxxxine, written and directed by West, is set about six years after the events of X and focuses on the lone survivor of that bloody night, aspiring starlet Maxine, played by Goth. Now in grungy mid-1980s Hollywood, Maxine is now Maxine Minx, a full-fledged porn star (and wearing the mileage,...

Production on MaXXXine, the sequel to director Ti West‘s films Pearl (watch it Here) and X (watch that one at This Link), is said to have wrapped last May, around the time that production company and distributor A24 unveiled a first look image from the movie that shows franchise star Mia Goth alongside singer Halsey. (That image can be seen at the bottom of this article.) Things have been pretty quiet on the MaXXXine front since then, aside from news of a lawsuit being filed by a background actor – but now, thanks to the YouTube interview show What’s Under the Bed?, we have a bit of a status update from West, who also happened to show off a prop from the film during his interview.
At about the 26:37 point of the What’s Under the Bed? interview, West is asked about the props he has kept from the movies he has made.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Dream Scenario, A24’s surreal dark comedy from Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli that plays off Nicolas Cage’s decades-long permeation of the imagination.
In the buzzy Toronto Film Festival title produced by Square Peg — the banner of Hereditary and Beau Is Afraid helmer Ari Aster — Cage stars as Paul Matthews, an ordinary biology professor whose life takes an unexpected turn when he starts appearing in the dreams of people worldwide. Initially amused by the situation, Paul’s attitude later becomes one of horror and frustration, as peoples’ dreams of him turn into nightmares, and he’s ostracized by the public for actions taken only in their minds.

Nicolas Cage can be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare. A24 has released the first trailer for its new dark comedy “Dream Scenario,” from “Sick of Myself” writer-director Kristoffer Borgli. Nicolas Cage, after more than 100 credits, finally has his dream role, at least as comedy fans are concerned. He knocks it out of the park as a schlubby, balding college professor who suddenly starts appearing in people’s dreams, first his daughter’s, then an old girlfriend’s, and soon millions of people around the globe are seeing this ordinary looking, very plain guy walking through their slumber in rather non-descript ways no matter what the situation. He becomes a phenomenon, until it reverses and the whole thing turns into a literal nightmare.

Exclusive: Despite the paranoia on behalf of exhibitors and studios that the theatrical release schedule will switch up further due to the writers and actors strikes, awards-season fare continues to get release dates. The latest: A24’s dark comedy Dream Scenario, starring Oscar winner Nicolas Cage, which will hit theaters November 10.
The movie from director Kristoffer Borgli (Sick of Myself) and produced by Ari Aster is opening the Toronto Film Festival’s Platform section next month. Early November has been a rich launchpad for A24 as it’s where Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird opened. It wound up grossing close to $49 million domestic, $78M worldwide and notched five Oscar nominations.

She’s a staaaaar! Mia Goth is reprising her role as aspiring porn star Maxine in MaXXXine, the upcoming horror film from director Ti West and A24, and she’s getting a star-studded cast to join her including Halsey, Kevin Bacon, Giancarlo Esposito, Elizabeth Debicki, Lily Collins, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, and Moses Sumney. It’s a continuation of West’s 2022 erotic slasher X, which also got the prequel treatment with Pearl just a few months later.
MaXXXine follows its titular final girl after the events of X, in which she was the sole survivor of an adult film production that became graphic in all the wrong ways. But witnessing a few brutal murders can’t keep Maxine away from following her dream of becoming a household name actress. Now, instead of cutting her teeth in rural 1970s Texas, she’s ringing in a new decade by heading out west to Los Angeles.

Ti West has locked in an all-star cast for his Mia Goth-led A24 horror pic MaXXXine, with Elizabeth Debicki (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.), Moses Sumney (The Idol), Michelle Monaghan (Nanny), Bobby Cannavale (The Watcher), Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), Halsey (Americana), Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul) and Kevin Bacon (City on a Hill) closing deals for roles.
MaXXXine is the third title in A24‘s first major horror franchise, on the heels of West’s films X and Pearl, both of which were released to much acclaim last year. The ’70s-set X had Goth pulling double duty as Maxine, who sees her pornography-shooting friends violently murdered in Texas, and one of their elderly assailants, Pearl. The latter film, set in 1918, meanwhile, served up an origin story for the latter villain character.

Back in September, just a few days before director Ti West’s Pearl (watch it Here) – a prequel to his film X (watch that one at This Link) – reached theatres, production / distribution company A24 announced that they had given the greenlight to a third film in the franchise: MaXXXine. Now Pearl and X star Mia Goth has said that the script for MaXXXine is even better than the scripts for the previous two films.
Speaking with Variety, Goth said, “It’s the best script of the three by far. It’s going be the best movie of the three. We’re all so tight now. This is going to be our third movie we’re working on together and everyone’s coming back together, so it’s bringing the band all back together again. We just have a shorthand with each other. We know how everybody works and we’re all so excited.

When our own JimmyO interviewed director Ti West and star Mia Goth about their X (watch it at This Link) prequel Pearl (watch that one Here), West said that he and Goth crafted the script for Pearl together while he was spending two weeks in quarantine before he could start working on X in New Zealand. They would discuss the story and the Pearl character over FaceTime, then work on the script. During an appearance at the Savannah College of Art and Design during the 25th Scad Savannah Film Festival, Goth talked more about the scripting process – and revealed that the creepy smile Pearl gives at the end of the film was something West just thought of when they were on set that day.

Nicolas Cage is back! Okay, it's not like he went anywhere, as the running joke goes in his recent meta-action-comedy "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent." Still, there's no denying we're in the middle of a Cage-aissance following his direct-to-video era, starting with films like "Mandy" and "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" in 2018, and continuing on to "Massive Talent" and, in particular, his haunting, ruminative drama "Pig" (pictured above).
Up next, Cage stars in "Butcher's Crossing," a western that finds the actor "at his most subdued, but still radiating energy that can only be described as malevolent," as /Film's Chris Evangelista put it in his positive review from the film's debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. It's one of several intriguing projects Cage has coming out between now and the end of 2023, including Chris McKay's horror-comedy "Renfield" (featuring Cage as Count Dracula himself).

“Pearl” is here.
The character, introduced as a murderous old crone in this spring’s 1970’s-set “X,” gets her own origin story in Ti West’s “Pearl,” which just debuted in theaters with Mia Goth in the title role. And, as it turns out, Pearl as a young woman is as deeply messed up (and as oddly sympathetic) as she was as an old lady.
In the new movie, set in 1918, Pearl is a young woman marooned on a barren Texas farm, her days spent caring for her father and dreaming of becoming a movie star. (Her husband is away at war.) That’s basically all you need to know; “Pearl” is just as odd and transfixing as “X,” but with an aesthetic borrowed from Douglas Sirk instead of Tobe Hooper. (The movie is shot in lush widescreen as compared to “X’s” more cramped frame.)

Fans can now get a special sneak peek at Ti West’s “Pearl,” thanks to a peepshow preview.
The “X” prequel film starring Mia Goth is set in 1919, with Goth’s title character dreaming of Hollywood stardom. What she settles for is watching a “dirty movie” backstage with her projectionist beau.
“Peep like Pearl,” the official “Pearl: An ‘X’ Origin Story” Twitter page reads. “For your weekend viewing pleasure, enjoy this X-rated archive of original stag films, the earliest and dirtiest roots of American pornography.”
Lead star Goth recently told W Magazine that the pornographic elements in both “Pearl” and “X” rooted the sensual slashers in a certain layer of humanity, calling back to the basic instincts of sex, birth, and death.

Do you have the “X” factor?
Ti West and A24 issued a new online casting call for fans to be extras for upcoming franchise installment, “MaXXXine.”
Per the rules, fans must reenact the final standoff between Pearl and Maxine, both played by Mia Goth, in “X.” Participants can submit their audition videos on TikTok, Twitter, or Instagram with the hashtag #XCastingCall. The deadline for all submissions is September 28 at 11:59 p.m. Et.
Goth reprises her role for “MaXXXine,” set a decade after the events of “X” where an adult film shoot turns into a slaughter. “MaXXXine” picks up in 1985, with Maxine finding her way to Los Angeles.
Filmmaker West previously told IndieWire’s Eric Kohn that the third film will be “about how home video has affected people” in the 1980s.
“I’m very proud of these,” West stated. “They’re super different and very out-of-nowhere. You won’t...

Ti West already released one of the most buzzed-about horror films of the year with X, but he's only begun to explore his blood-soaked cinematic universe. In addition to the X prequel Pearl that recently world premiered at the Venice Film Festival (read Heather Wixson's 5-star review), it was revealed at the Toronto International Film Festival that a third film in the franchise is coming soon!
Written and directed by Ti West and titled MaXXXine, the third film in the X franchise "follows Maxine (Goth), after the events of X, as the sole survivor who continues her journey towards fame setting out to make it as an actress in 1980’s Los Angeles."
As with X and Pearl, MaXXXine will be released and produced by A24. Mia Goth is executive producing, with Jacob Jaffke and Ti West producing and Kevin Turen and Harrison Kreiss on board as additional producers.

A24 will be giving director Ti West’s Pearl, a prequel to his film X (which was released earlier this year, and now you can watch it at This Link), a theatrical release on September 16th – but the film had a screening at the Toronto International Film Festival last night, and those in attendance were surprised to see that the end credits were followed by a teaser trailer for another chapter in this series: an X sequel titled MaXXXine!
