After seven seasons, the Bordelon family’s journey came to an end. “Queen Sugar” signed off on Tuesday night with a poetic series finale centered around the importance of family — in all its forms.
Series creator Ava DuVernay wrote the finale, titled “For They Existed,” and returned to the director’s chair for the first time since helming the pilot and second episode.
In Variety’s Power of Women cover story celebrating the series’ legacy, the Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated filmmaker said she was “euphoric” about bookending the series as director and insisted she was wholly “satisfied” with the farewell ode.
“‘Queen Sugar’ is the longest commitment I’ve ever had — and we’re talking relationships too — and I did my very best every single day,” DuVernay explained, sitting alongside executive producer Oprah Winfrey. “In the end, there was no sadness; I was just so pleased, so proud. When Queen Sugar began, no one in the Bordelon family was content.
Charley's life was riddled with scandal as her marriage to Davis fell apart. Nova was having an affair with a married man and Ralph Angel left Blue waiting on a park bench so he could rob a convenience store.
Ernest's death pushed them all to see how far they were from the people they were meant to be.
Fast forward seven seasons to Queen Sugar Season 7 Episode 13, and the Bordelons are in a much different place.
A much better place. They've found their flow.
Except for maybe Charley.
As happy as I was to finally see Charley again, something felt off.
Perhaps it's because she wasn't around all season, but her scenes with Micah felt as though they were cut and pasted together. They were disjointed and didn't pack the emotional punch I had hoped they would.

We've dreamt of the day we'd see Sam Landry get evicted from his own property, and it finally happened on Queen Sugar Season 7 Episode 12.
So why did such an epic moment in this saga feel like such a letdown?
Despite watching the Bordelons battle the Landrys for seven seasons, Sam Landry's eviction fell flat due to a lack of buildup.
In one episode, we learned that Sam was in debt and not paying his bills. In the next, we got one scene of Ralph Angel testifying in front of the Usda, and then Ralph Angel, Darla, Billie, and Prosper watched the Sheriff's officers remove Sam's furniture from his home.
It should have been satisfying, but it wasn't because there was no drama in these scenes.
Why didn't we see Sam sweating this moment as he tried to call in favors from everyone he knew to keep the wolf from his door?...

Betty finally returned to St. Jo's to confront her past and get her daughter back on Queen Sugar Season 7 Episode 11.
But she was far from the only one dealing with family trauma as Nova lost Aunt Martha and Ralph Angel and Darla were at odds over what to tell Blue.
Watching Ralph Angel speak for himself, his children and the rights of all black farmers was a meaningful moment.
Ralph Angel isn't comfortable being a public speaker. He isn't like Charley or Nova. They are in their element and are able to communicate passionately in a front of a crowd.
But Ralph Angel is more of an introvert, Given his past, he's less confident in front of people he views as being above him.
Thankfully, Prosper was there to remind Ralph Angel how far he's come and the power he wielded at this moment.
You’re standing for us, for yourself,...

We were presented with another mystery surrounding the Landrys on Queen Sugar Season 7 Episode 9 but is it worth the wait?
Mr. Randloph brought Darla and Ralph Angel proof that not only is the bank ripping off black farmers, but they're giving the Landrys a pass on their loans as long as the loan manager gets to line his pockets.
How does this bank stay in business if it's not lending money to small farmers and not making the big ones pay at all?
And what are the Landrys building on Betty's land? Is Ralph Angel right? Would they be able somehow to cut off the water supply to the other farms and drive them under?
We've got a lot more questions than answers, but I wish it felt more exciting. What this new twist invoked more than anything was the longing that Charley would return.
And I know that's beating the proverbial dead horse.

The Bordelons took things one catastrophe at a time on Queen Sugar Season 7 Episode 8 and found once again that they were stronger when they worked together.
Speaking of working together, Violet was the rock that was there for everyone who needed a steadying hand, especially Darla and Billie.
I couldn't believe that Jimmy Dale listed Violet as his next of kin and had the hospice contact her.
Then again, what's not to be believed? Jimmy Dale was a selfish man who used or abused everyone he came in contact with and likely had no one there for him at the end of his life. When asked to list his next of kin, who else did he have but his ex-wife?
I was proud of Violet for not bothering with Jimmy Dale, even as he was dying. That man willfully caused her nothing but pain and seemed to gain pleasure in doing it.

The storm brought ghosts from the past to Queen Sugar Season 7 Episode 7, and although Nova faced hers, Darla doesn't yet know what is headed her way.
It was no surprise that Ralph Angel made sure the farmhosue was secured. It doesn't matter to him that the Landrys are the official owners. It will always be his family's farm, and he'll do everything he can to protect it.
But he had to practically force Micah to come with him to help.
In Micah's defense, it wasn't so much that he didn't want to do the work. It was more that he didn't want to hear a lecture.
Ralph Angel wasn't about to judge Micah; he just didn't want him to close himself off from any more members of the family. What was eye-roll worthy was that Micah kept insisting he's got everything under control when everything's falling apart.
Look, I’m...

It was a tough day for the Bordelon family, and after Queen Sugar Season 7 Episode 5, it looks like, at least for some, it is destined to get worse.
As nervous as Nova was to ask her family about making Blessings and Blood into a movie, it went well with almost everyone.
Surprisingly, Aunt Vi was far more open and forgiving than was expected. The thought of Oprah playing her in the movie, and a hefty paycheck, had her smiling.
Violet: Oh, Nova. Baby, that book caused a whole lot of pain for all of us.
Nova: I know, and I’m sorry.
Violet: But baby, it also aired a lot of dark secrets that needed light in order for us to heal.

There were plenty of highs and lows on Queen Sugar Season 7 Episode 4 from the surprise of Darla's past to Prosper proposing to Sandy, but only one character had me yelling at the screen.
Micah.
How could Micah do that to his mother? How could he dredge up one of Charley's worst moments and try to sell it for profit or his own fame?
Micah isn't some desperate college student in need of money. He's not going to get kicked out of school or lose his place to live if he can't pay the bills. His parents are wealthy, and they pay for everything.
So there's no financial reason for Micah to sell out someone he cares about for a quick buck.
Was it to fit in with Zane and the crew at Ivory? If so, that's just pathetic. Zane has made it clear that his only interest in Micah depends...

Oprah Winfrey and Ava DuVernay are two of the creative leaders honored for Variety’s 2022 Power of Women presented by Lifetime. For more, click here.
Oprah Winfrey has spent most of her career talking, so it’s a little surprising that the only sound you hear from the porch of her second home in Maui is absolute silence. Forget about the ocean waves or rustling palm trees. Ok, if you’re lucky enough to hang with Oprah for an entire afternoon, this zen will be interrupted by the periodic squawking of wild roosters. In such a tranquil retreat, you can think clearly, cradled in the beauty of all that Hawaii has to offer.
It’s this very place of refuge, in fact, where Winfrey set a trap for filmmaker Ava DuVernay that would launch one of their greatest collaborations: OWN’s “Queen Sugar.”

Ralph Angel is a wonderful man with a huge heart, but at times, he makes such stupid decisions you just want to shake some sense into him.
Watching Queen Sugar Season 7 Episode 3 was one of those times.
What more does Ralph Angel want from Darla? She has stood by his side for years.
It felt like a new beginning when they finally got back together and married. But Ralph Angel continues to slip back into old patterns.
The worst of which was returning to his criminal behavior. He almost ended up back in prison despite having a wife, child, and child on the way.
All of that occurred because Ralph Angel's pride wouldn't allow him to ask for help when it was readily available. Darla, Charley, Nova, and Violet would have gladly aided him in keeping the farm going during the Covid-induced slump.
But Ralph Angel wouldn't ask, and he...

When “Queen Sugar” star Dawn-Lyen Gardner’s Charley Bordelon was missing from the trailer and key art for Season 7 of the OWN drama series, fans questioned where the middle Bordelon sibling had gone.
When the footage debuted, Variety reported that Gardner would not be a series regular for the final season’s 13 episodes, noting that at the end of Season 6, the character made her reconciliation with estranged husband Davis (Timon Kyle Durrett) more official, accepting his remarriage proposal and planning to move back to Los Angeles. With the primary action of Season 7 taking place in the fictional Louisiana parish of St. Josephine, Charley’s storyline would instead be tracked in a number of episodes across the season.
But ahead of the debut of Tuesday’s season premiere, Gardner took to social media to explain that she “did not participate” in the making of the show’s final hours.

The Bordelon family's return for their final season wasn't as much of a bang as was expected, but more of a slow burn.
Something was missing from Queen Sugar Season 7 Episode 1, or should we say, someone.
Dawn-Lyen Gardner chose not to return as a regular cast member this season, and her absence was felt during this premiere.
Charley was such an integral part of this series that simply having her name mentioned or her face show up on the phone wasn't good enough. Queen Sugar may follow the Bordelon family, but Charley's journey led viewers into this world.
Charley struggled to feel a part of this family. Her determination, intelligence, and love helped save it from the brink. And with Sam Landry again trying to destroy the family farm, it feels like they need her now more than ever.
But Charley and Davis are offscreen, as Charley chose to pursue her political career in California,...

It’s nearly time for “Queen Sugar” fans to “take flight” one last time, as we prepare to say goodbye to the Bordelon family.
OWN has released the official trailer for the seventh and final season of the critically acclaimed drama, created by Ava DuVernay and executive produced by Oprah Winfrey, which begins Tuesday, Sept. 6.
“If we do not honor our past, we dishonor our future. Listen,” says Rutina Wesley’s Nova, the eldest Bordelon sibling, as the clip begins, previewing the tense and tender scenes that will play out over the next 13 episodes.
The first look, set to Al Green’s “Love and Happiness,” tees up the latest developments in the lives of Bordelons: Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) and Darla (Bianca Lawson) have welcomed their second child, a daughter, and they continue to fight for their family’s future by exorcising their personal demons — namely, his deal with the...

Queen Sugar creator and executive producer Ava DuVernay, who directed the pilot, will return to direct the series’ final episode. Production on the seventh and final season has begun in and around New Orleans.
DuVernay will wrap up seven seasons of an all-women directorial team for OWN’s award-winning drama series. In addition to DuVernay, season 7 directors include Kat Candler, Stacey Muhammad, showrunner Shaz Bennett, Patricia Cardoso, Aurora Guerrero and DeMane Davis.
When Queen Sugar first began production in 2016, DuVernay made a commitment to exclusively hire women as directors, and kept that promise through the entire series run. Over the course of its seven seasons, Queen Sugar has employed 42 women to direct episodes of the show, with 39 of those being first-time scripted television directors in the United States.

Charley Bordelon was on the verge of confronting the Laundry Enterprises board on Queen Sugar Season 3 Episode 8, but will it do her any good?
I don't expect that any of these board members will care that the company may be using the Epa to get what they want, and certainly not while they have the cover of an Epa official in their pocket.
Knowing that Charley and Nova were working together calmed my nerves a bit. They are both intelligent, tenacious women who will be a force to be reckoned with, but even they need to have their ducks in a row before they take on Sam Landry.
I can only imagine that it won't be long before Sam's son, Colton, enters the picture, and I'm curious as to how he and Jacob get along. I'll guess not well, as Jacob seems insecure and Colton sounds like his father's shining star,...
