1. The Strategic Manipulation of Richie Aprile Janice Soprano, portrayed as Tony Soprano’s sister on The Sopranos, is a character whose actions often sparked controversy and discord. In Season 2, Janice’s manipulation skills are on full display. With a cunning that rivaled their mother Livia, Janice exhibits a ruthlessness that is both shocking and pivotal to the narrative. Her manipulation of Richie Aprile was a calculated move that sowed seeds of tension within the Soprano family. That side of Janice came out when she tried to plant the idea of murdering Tony in the head of Richie Aprile, highlighting her...

The classic show “The Sopranos” began its life on HBO on January 10, 1999, single handedly launching the Golden Age of Cable Drama. It’s difficult to recall now, but when the show premiered, HBO was not yet HBO, and original programming outside of network primetime was still in its infancy. Creator David Chase crafted a series at once dark and comedic, violent and emotionally vibrant. It introduced the world to entertainment’s ultimate antihero in Italian-American mob boss Tony Soprano, played with power, pathos and perturbation by James Gandolfini. Beset by depression and panic attacks, he showed us what “The Godfather” never did: a gangster in therapy, regularly visiting the office of New Jersey psychotherapist Dr. Jennifer Melfi (Lorraine Bracco) to download his many troubles and come to terms with a toxic mother Livia (Nancy Marchand). Tony’s long-suffering wife Carmela (pitch-perfect work from Edie Falco) and precocious daughter Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) completed his female-surrounding quartet.

In an interview with the Metrograph Journal, Eduardo Williams remembers the first time he ventured into a jungle. Rumor had it the forest teemed with cougars, but the Argentinian director saw none; instead, all he experienced was a curious mix of wonder and terror, poised between “wanting to see the wild animal but also being afraid.” Anyone mildly acquainted with the filmmaker’s oeuvre––a handful of shorts and two features to date––will recognize that as an accurate description of what it means to dive into his cinema. There is something exhilarating about Williams’ films: experimental works in the most literal sense of the word, they combine conceptual audacity with technological virtuosity to stress-test the boundaries of what cinema can still be and mean. To watch them is to be ushered into unmapped universes pullulating with images that feel in turns familiar and perturbing. Each time out, Williams doesn...

warning: contains (potential historical) spoilers for Domina seasons 1 & 2
Ancient history is a gift to screenwriters, because you can make up most of what’s going on and still claim to be completely historically accurate. Domina takes full advantage of that to produce what might be the most historically accurate period drama ever made, even though it might not bear any resemblance to the actual lives of the actual people portrayed.
Making a TV show about the ancient Roman Empress Livia is not like making a show about, say, Winston Churchill. If you’re writing a screenplay about Churchill, you’ve got access to letters, calendars, portraits, photographs, recordings, diaries, newspaper reports, memoirs… the list goes on and on. That means you have loads of material to use and adapt for your film or TV show, but it also means it is impossible to be completely historically accurate, because you will...

Everyone knows the problem: there’s too much really good TV these days, and not enough time to watch it all. But if you’re a fan of gripping, adult drama that follows twisted, complicated relationships with high stakes, it’s well worth putting aside a few hours of your time to watch Sky Atlantic’s Domina.
Domina is the story of Livia Drusilla, the wife of the first Roman Emperor, Augustus. The historical Livia is a truly fascinating character. Her father fought and died with the assassins of Julius Caesar, she endured a siege with a toddler, then she ended up married for 50 years to the man whose army was on the attacking side in both cases. She had more power and influence than any other woman in Roman history and worked together with Augustus to help him rule, but his reign was peppered with the untimely deaths of multiple family members,...

Welcome to the MTV Video Music Awards. Music’s biggest night! Well, not quite. How about: the night MTV shows how much it cares about music by deciding, “Way too many people are noticing the VMAs. We better move it to a Tuesday night in September.” But fortunately, the stars came out. The 2023 VMAs show was full of surprises — this was one of those random years when the Video Music Awards bizarrely failed to suck. The reason? It delivered a constant barrage of pop stars doing one or more of...

Sky has released the official trailer and announced the UK broadcast date of ‘Domina’ Season II with new episodes dropping weekly as double bills on Sky Atlantic and Now from 13th September 2023.
The historical drama series takes place during one of the most provocative and turbulent periods in Roman history. The series follows the extraordinary rise of Gaius Octavius, who became the first Emperor of Rome as Caesar Augustus, and his third wife, Livia Drusilla.
‘Domina’ chronicles the struggle for control of the Roman Empire, and of Rome’s Imperial Family, from a rare female perspective. In its first season, Livia Drusilla (Kasia Smutniak), the golden girl of the prominent Claudii family, returned to Rome after 10 years in exile, determined to regain everything that was stolen from her. When she married Gaius – Caesar Augustus (Matthew McNulty) – she was seated at the top of a fractious empire and a dysfunctional dynasty.

In my other life, I am an Ancient History lecturer at a UK university, which means I am often giving my students recommendations for films and TV shows to watch about Ancient Rome. None of them are especially historically accurate (a totally historically accurate film would probably be a boring film) but as long as you don’t take anything in them too literally, they are a nice introduction to the world of ancient Rome. Gladiator might make Rome a Republic again about 1600 years too early, but it shows how the Colosseum functioned, trapdoors and all, very well. The Eagle’s history of the Ninth Legion and depiction of Iron Age Picts might be a bit iffy, but it gives you a taste of life in the Roman provinces. You get the idea.

Historical fiction shows based on characters who lived centuries ago are always intriguing to watch. The history presented in the form of a television show allows us to understand the nuances of those real-life people who carried out good and bad acts for the sake of power and nothing else. It also helps us to see them from a gray perspective, for each of them had their own intentions and journeys to justify their acts. The Tudors, The Serpent Queen, Rome, Vikings, Downton Abbey, and Marco Polo are names of some of the many shows in this genre. Domina is about the Roman Dictator Augustus’ wife, Livia, who managed to stay in power for years even though she could not give him an heir, which was crucial for any family ruling a vast empire.

Over the decades, viewers have enjoyed many historical-fiction shows, as it is not just a great way to learn about the subject matter, but the indulgence factor works well in such shows. There is drama, treachery, lust, love, killing, and, most of all, historical accuracy as well. Vikings, Marco Polo, The Tudors, Reign, Downton Abbey, Versailles, and Barbarians are some examples of popular television shows in the historical fiction genre, and all of them have one thing in common: a focus on the politics and the drama of the era. Domina, created and written by Simon Burke for Sky Atlantic (UK and Italy), is about the infamous Roman Empire, which in its early turbulent period was ruled by Augustus Caesar and his wife Livia Drusilla, the protagonist of this show. The power of this woman made sure she and her husband would remain undefeated for a long time.

During its six seasons on the air, "The Sopranos" became a regular part of Sunday nights in America. Before it made it onto small screens everywhere, the show was born from the Sunday night traditions of the series creator, David Chase. Many of his characters were based directly on his own family members and the conversations they would have over dinner at the end of each week. One such character was a huge favorite for Chase, the cast, and viewers alike — Uncle Junior.
The idea for "The Sopranos" was conceived in Chase's family home. "I used to tell people stories about my mother," Chase recalled in "Woke Up This Morning: The Definitive Oral History of The Sopranos". "My wife, Denise, was the first one to say, 'You got to write a movie about her, or you got to write a TV show about her, because she's so funny.'" With this mindset,...

"There isn't a medical explanation." Umi Films + Rai Cinema have revealed a first look teaser trailer for an interesting new Italian film titled Amusia, premiering this month at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (aka PÖFF) in Estonia. Amusia, from the Greek "a-musia," meaning lack of harmony, is a biological musical disorder that causes inability to process, understand and recognize music. In a world saturated with music, Amusia tells the story of a girl who is born without the means to hear it. The disease, and lack of acceptance, push her to run away, finding herself in a forgotten suburban neighbourhood. There she befriends a boy who is fighting his own solitude through music as he tries to prevent his own dreams from rotting away. A love story between two people that turn out to be not so different after all. The film stars Carlotta Gamba as Livia, Giampiero de Concilio,...

This article contains spoilers for all of House of the Dragon season 1.
Author George R.R. Martin draws on lots of different things for inspiration when he writes his A Song of Ice and Fire series, which was adapted into Game of Thrones and now House of the Dragon. The influence of the medieval era on the history of Westeros is well known, from Henry I making his barons swear loyalty to his daughter Matilda just as Viserys I makes his lords swear loyalty to his daughter Rhaenyra in Fire & Blood (adapted into House of the Dragon), to the conflict between the Starks and the Lannisters in A Song of Ice and Fire that partly mirrors the conflict between the real life houses of York and Lancaster in the 1400s.
But there’s another semi-historical influence on Martin’s world that is not so often talked about. In 1934, Robert Graves’ novel I,...

Before there was prestige TV, there was "The Sopranos." The series effortlessly blends brilliant dialogue with complex, serious plots, proving from the beginning that its creative team trusted the intelligence of their audience. It is continuously ranked near the top of best-of lists, and has been awarded every trophy in the game, including 21 Emmys and two Peabody Awards. "The Sopranos" was the first cable series to win an Emmy for outstanding drama, while leads James Gandolfini and Edie Falco took home three Emmys each. It's a show that changed how we think about television — without it, we likely wouldn't have gotten "Mad Men," "Breaking Bad," or any of the other antihero-driven dramas that defined TV in the '00s and '10s.
There are many words that you can use to describe "The Sopranos," but one that rarely comes up is "underrated." However, not every episode gets the acclaim it deserves.

"It's all a big nothing." Those words from Livia Soprano (Nancy Marchand) in the episode "D-Girl" define her character and the ethos of "The Sopranos." Even for a show about violent mobsters, it's strikingly cynical about human nature and people's ability to change. By the end of the show, almost everyone has either remained static or gotten worse ... the ones who made it out alive that is.

As has been pointed many times so far this year, 2022 has been a treasure trove for stories about con artists. In the TV world, spring brought plenty of stories chronicling how people in the recent past have hoodwinked their way to enormous wealth and cultural cachet purely by virtue of lulling the right people into a false sense of security. Of course, 2010s tech and entrepreneurial climbers do not have a monopoly on grift, in worlds either real or fictional.
Premiering in the UK back on February and arriving on Prime Video this week, the new psychological drama “Chloe” makes the perfect bookend to a half-year trend of people tricking themselves into situations far greater than they imagined.
Much like those other stories, “Chloe” begins on a humble scale. Becky Green (Erin Doherty) spends her idle moments scrolling social media, in whatever time she has in between taking care of...

Twelve years after the launch of Instagram, it’s hardly news that no one’s life is really as blissful as it looks on their carefully curated feeds. Yet as Becky (Erin Doherty) can attest, it can be difficult to remember that when you’re stuck in a run-down two-bedroom flat on the unfashionable side of Bristol with your ailing mother, poring over snapshots from the much prettier, posher life of someone you used to know.
In fact, it’ll take most of the six hourlong episodes of Chloe for Becky to learn just how messy and troubled the life of her childhood friend Chloe Fairbourne (Poppy Gilbert) really was. But if the series ultimately offers few revelations we haven’t seen before, they’re still ones that ring more or less true, especially with Doherty’s mesmerizing performance at the center.

LGBTQ+ film and media organization, NewFest, announced the inaugural recipients of the New Voices Filmmaker Grant, a new initiative in partnership with Netflix to support emerging LGBTQ+ filmmakers that will distribute a total of 100,000 in funds.
A cohort of four filmmakers who each receive a 25,000 grant to support professional development and create new work, and will have access to network-building opportunities through industry events and a mentorship track facilitated by NewFest. Netflix has pledged support for this program for two years.
“We were astounded and excited by the volume and strength of applications received,” said NewFest Executive Director David Hatkoff. “With the challenges emerging filmmakers face both in funding and creating their work, this opportunity to support and amplify underrepresented voices by providing resources and guided mentorships has the potential to change careers and lives. We are grateful to Netflix for their trust and support in making this possible on such a large scale.
