Tyler Perry’s The Oval has taken us on a hell of a ride in its second season, which came to a dead stop on Tuesday — emphasis on dead.
The BET drama’s midseason finale featured the not-entirely-unexpected demise of mic-dropping badass Diane Wilmont, who was brutally murked by Kyle, even after forking over valuable intel about Bobby and Max. Kyle informed Donald that “someone” has been tasked with disposing of Diane’s body, so you know that job’s bound to get screwed up. (Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t it take half a season for...

This week's offerings find twilight twenty-somethings longing for love in Los Angeles, "The Mummy" franchise heading East and a gruesome subway slasher trying very hard not to scare people clean out of the theater, at least not before the movie actually starts.
"America the Beautiful"
At 12, Gerren Taylor was a bright young model who strolled the catwalk of Fashion Week in Los Angeles. By 13, she was considered a has-been. Director Darryl Roberts traces Taylor's early entrance and exit from the runway to paint a far larger picture of the inner workings of the fashion industry, examining the class system of models and the advertisers and designers who relentlessly manufacture a feeling of negative self-image among consumers and then prey upon it to get us to dip into our wallets. Ever wonder what's behind the fashion industry's obsession with anorexic-thin models?
According to "America the Beautiful," an interesting but messy documentary directed by Darryl Roberts, skinny models help keep down the cost of fabric. In other words, it costs more to make a size 6 than a size 2.
That tidbit of information is tossed off as Roberts travels to New York, Paris and London with supermodel wannabe Gerren Taylor and her controlling mother, Michelle, who did some amateur modeling years earlier.

NEW YORK -- First Independent Pictures has picked up all US rights except DVD to Darryl Roberts' look at our image-obsessed society, "America the Beautiful".
The documentary, which features interviews with Jessica Simpson, Anthony Kiedis, Eve Ensler and others, will have a YWCA-sponsored marketing campaign featuring current Miss America Kirsten Haglund. The eating disorder activist will make promotional appearances for the film shortly before its Aug. 6 New York run and national rollout.
Roberts, who also narrated and produced the docu, follows teenage model Gerren Taylor as he examines the beauty industry and entertainment media's impact on our views about body image and plastic surgery. "Beautiful" won best docu at the Chicago International Film Festival and had a recent theatrical run in the city before the acquisition deal.
