In 2016, I attended a conversation between filmmaker Joss Whedon and actor Mark Ruffalo, who Whedon recruited to star in "The Avengers" as Bruce Banner/The Hulk. Hosted by the Tribeca Film Festival, this was the same one where Whedon said "Avengers: Age of Ultron" made him feel like "a miserable failure."
During the talk, Whedon confessed how he feels that he lacks the eye of a great director. This moment of vulnerability by Whedon stuck out to me because it echoed criticism of his work I'd absorbed online as a budding cinephile. These critics would argue that Whedon's directing never matured past middling TV-level craft, as seen on "Buffy The Vampire Slayer." At the time, I was one of the Whedon faithful and stubbornly refused to see it, but my mind has been cleared now.

Every Marvel fan wants to see Doctor Doom in the McU now that it’s possible. Fox tried to adapt him for the screen twice, and fell short both times. What we really need Marvel Studios to do, then, is to give us a pretty faithful version of the Fantastic Four’s nemesis: A sorcerer/scientist/king who’s one of the most dangerous beings in the Marvel universe. While we’re probably still a ways away from seeing him in the McU, this awesome concept art down below at least gives us a flavor of how he could be depicted.
This isn’t fan art, you see, but comes from Charlie Wen, Head of Visual Development at Marvel. He shared the piece on his Instagram account, clarifying that he didn’t make this for work but just for fun. It imagines a “what if?” scenario where Victor Von Doom...

A new piece of concept art from the preproduction phase of The Avengers depicts Thor, the God of Thunder, in a much less regal outfit than what we saw in the film.
As Thor, Chris Hemsworth has gone through a lot of changes ever since appearing in his first solo film back in 2011. The McU depicted Asgard as the ruling seat of gods, leaning heavily on the mythological aspects of the Nordic folklore to introduce the strongest Avenger. Even in the first Avengers film, the God of Thunder was a marvel to behold, donning majestic armor and sporting a look that made him resemble a true king of the ancient times. But as the cinematic universe evolved, so did Thor and by Avengers: Age of Ultron, the producers moved towards giving Odinson a modern and earthly look.

12 years in and with many successful movies under their belt, it’s easy to forget how difficult it was for Marvel to translate the Avengers, many of whom weren’t that familiar to general audiences, to the big screen. One major challenge came in cracking their costumes – how best to translate the comic book looks to live-action, making them more realistic and believable without losing the appeal of the source material? Just one of the heroes who needed a lot of work to nail their McU apparel was Thor. As this cool newly unveiled concept art reveals.
Concept artist Charlie Wen has shared a piece of his from pre-production on 2011’s Thor on his Instagram account. Wen explained that this is one of several black and white concept pieces he did at the time as they were trying to figure out Thor’s costume. He reveals that this version was...

Geeks with long memories may remember that Jason Momoa was up for the role of Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy. In the end, Marvel cast Dave Bautista, and everyone — including Momoa — seems happy with that outcome. However, just to give us a taste of what might have been, Marvel Studios’ Head of Visual Development, Charlie Wen, dropped some concept art of what Momoa might have looked like in the role. Wen calls it an “early sketch” and says that Momoa gave a great audition, but Bautista ended up being a better fit.
Jason Momoa was almost Drax (before his #aquaman days;)! He also had a great audition that deftly displayed his toughness and double blades handles. But in short, Bautista was definitely the right choice- he had a perfect blend of natural quirk and braun...

Picture the scene: we’ve slipped into some alternate reality in which Jason Momoa, star of Justice League and the so-hot-right-now Aquaman movie, has landed the role of Drax the Destroyer in what would be James Gunn’s first Guardians of the Galaxy film. What would that look like?
A lot like God of War, it seems, as Charlie Wen, head honcho at Marvel Studios’ visual department, shared two pieces of concept art rendering Momoa as the enraged Guardian – a role that would ultimately go to Dave Bautista, though Gunn’s shock departure from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has left Bautista’s fate undecided.
Nevertheless, this artwork presents a radically new version of Drax, replete with skinhead and twin blades. We’ll let Charlie Wen take it from here, who offered a little more insight into the character’s design via Instagram:

Marvel Studios’ own head and co-founder of Visual Development, Charlie Wen, offered a glimpse of what might’ve been this week with some new Guardians of the Galaxy concept art, exhibiting a more heavily armored Star-Lord than we ultimately got in the character’s first big screen outing.
Adapting the eccentric visuals of comic books to the big screen can often involve finding a tricky balance between honoring the source material and creating a look that doesn’t seem out of place in a live-action context. For reasons he refrains from explaining, Wen acknowledges that some liberties were taken for Chris Pratt’s take on Peter Quill, captioning his pair of images as follows:

The Avengers will always be remembered as a special Marvel movie.
It was, after all, the first comic book movie of its generation to unite Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, albeit with one or two internal conflicts along the way. Hey, it wouldn’t be the Avengers if they didn’t butt heads every once in a while.
Fast forward to now, though, and the McU is practically unrecognizable as we stand on the precipice of Phase 4, eagerly awaiting the back-to-back launch of Captain Marvel and the as-yet-untitled Avengers 4. Both Marvel movies are due to arrive next year, but for his latest post, esteemed concept artist Charlie Wen has shared his early Captain America design that was considered in the lead-up to The Avengers, before fellow Marvel wizard Ryan Meinerding came in and finished the job.

As promised, Marvel concept artist Charlie Wen (h/t ComicBook.com) has shared some decidedly alien concept art from the development of Captain America: The First Avenger.
It’s all about Hugo Weaving’s Red Skull (no surprise there) and Marvel’s original vision for his power-hungry Nazi. The goal here was seemingly to portray Red Skull as an alien entity in order to reflect the gross, inhumane goals underpinning his quest for the Tesseract.
He succeeds, though is ultimately ripped through time and space (more on that later). For his latest reveal, though, Wen has presented not one, not two, but three pieces of McU concept art illustrating an “eccentric” version of the classic Marvel villain.
Early eccentric Red Skull! Like Wacky Loki, I usually pushed in early versions to explore character before we settled on the story. He’s grandiose, and his mission is out of this world,...

Thor and Loki’s fraught sibling relationship is probably one of the most beloved character dynamics in the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe, as fans have got to see them go from nemeses to unlikely allies to brothers in arms against Thanos. This incredible bond could have been complicated, however, if the original plans for 2011’s Thor came to pass, as the Thunder God was going to have a second brother.

Asgard seemed like a pretty nice place. Shining towers, cool rainbow bridge, beautiful people chilling out on divans – if Heimdall hadn’t been so protective, it could have made a nice holiday destination in the McU. Oh well, it’s gone now thanks to Surtur being released and Thanos apparently killing most of the fleeing Asgardians.
Still, we’ll always have the memories. But those memories could have looked quite different if Marvel Studios had used this design for the original Thor by concept artist Charlie Wen. The thinking behind what you see below is that Asgard would reflect the mind of whoever sat on the throne. So, this layout reflects the ordered, stable and regal interior of Odin’s mind, with his throne being situated at the very centre of the city.

Before Thanos came in like a wrecking ball, destroying everything and everyone in his path, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki was widely considered to be the McU’s greatest ever villain.
Much of that can be traced back to Hiddleston’s gleeful performance as the dark prince of Asgard, which took center stage during The Avengers back in 2012. Subsequent McU films have toyed with Loki’s morality, culminating at the moment when he’s fighting alongside his half-brother Thor Odinson during the rip-roaring Ragnarok.
Alas, Loki’s journey came crashing to a halt during the opening moments of Avengers: Infinity War, when the enraged Thanos tossed him aside like a ragdoll. One of the most popular character dynamics in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the sibling rivalry between Asgardian brothers Thor and Loki. McU lovers adore the banter between Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston and it’s been a rollercoaster ride seeing their complex relationship develop over the years.
It all began in 2011’s Thor, of course, which saw the God of Thunder exiled to Earth, giving the trickster god the perfect opportunity to lead the Frost Giants in a quest to take over Asgard. Apart from the tussle with the Destroyer in New Mexico, the big battle of the third act was Thor and Loki’s fierce fight on the Bifrost bridge.
Now, we’ve got some early concept art for the movie which captures how this sibling skirmish could have gone down differently. The piece displays some very similar character designs to the finalized versions, but there is the odd difference.

Some of the credits on the new poster for The Avengers: Age of Ultron are pretty special and worth a closer look. Moreso than the actual poster image, which is like a bad dream with weird perspective, focus and faux-lighting glitches creating all sorts of ugliness.
Perhaps the most interesting details in the credit block are amongst the most obvious. Listed as being in the cast are Anthony Mackie, Hayley Atwell, Idris Elba and Stellan Skarsgard. Before all of those – coming right after the core Avengers, in fact – is Don Cheadle.

Marvel never fail to bring something awesome with them to Comic-Con, and we expect this year to be no different. Remember that way cool Ryan Meindering concept art for "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" that Entertainment Weekly unveiled last week? That art is now jumping out of the Jpeg world and into our own as a special limited edition promotional poster available only at Comic-Con International in San Diego. It'll be joined by a companion limited edition poster for "Thor: The Dark World" by artist Charlie Wen.
The "Winter Soldier" concept art shows off Steve Rogers battling with the titular antagonist, all while Falcon (portrayed by Anthony Mackie) swoops in overhead. The "Dark World" poster doesn't depict a scene from the film, that is unless Thor gets a bit of amnesia and suddenly has his memories rush back to him, montage style. The Charlie Wen poster features a who's who of Asgardian and Earthly characters, including Loki, Odin, Jane Foster and Malekith.

Guardians Of The Galaxy is easily Marvel’s weirdest and most unknown property to get the big screen treatment, and it’s also been the most secretive. Director James Gunn recently shed a light on a few of the details of the film, while dismissing comparisons to Star Wars, admitting to comparisons to Avengers, gushing about Chris Pratt, and his immense raccoon research. Prepare for a lot of raccoon typo’s.
The film was compared to Star Wars based on some concept art. His thoughts?
“I do think we’re very, very different from Star Wars. Some of the concept art that came out is under my tutelage, and some of it is before my tutelage. The concept art that came out is only stuff that was on the big Marvel collected disc set, talking about phase two and it had some stuff from Guardians. Some of the art by Charlie Wen and the guys.

Marvel Studios has presented interviews with the lead designers on key characters in Marvel's Avengers all week long. Previously we heard from Visual Supervisor, Charlie Wen on designing Thor and Loki. Today, we hear from artist, Andy Park who was responsible for the look of the S.H.I.E.L.D. characters, first up is Black Widow. On the subtlety of Black Widow's costume that's actually more intricate upon close examination: Andy Park: Since Widow appeared in “Iron Man 2,” we had to start from there. Widow was one they were pretty happy with, so they didn’t want to deviate too far from that. From there, I did versions where she was a little more armored up for heavy combat. In this film, she’s going into full-on combat, so I did versions with more armor. We also looked at the comics and her gauntlet is the most iconic thing,...

Talking to Marvel.com to promote the upcoming home release of the $1.5 billion box office hit, visual development supervisor Charlie Wen has shared a few new details about how Tom Hiddleston's 'Loki' costume for The Avengers was designed and developed, addressing both the story and visual reasons for such alterations. Check out his comments (and some concept art) below and then sound off with your thoughts in the usual place! On How Loki's Costume Progressed From Thor To Marvel's The Avengers: As far as character designs that were practical, he was my favorite one to redesign this time around. [Director] Joss [Whedon] wanted Loki to seem like he travelled to places we don’t know of--he’s changed since we last saw him in “Thor.” The metals on his costume are more worn and scratched, and he’s darker. Because of that, we were able to treat his metal more...

Artist Charlie Wen, who tag teams with Ryan Miendering to oversee the conceptual designs for Marvel Studios recently chatted with Marvel about designing Thor in The Avengers. You can check that out below along with a look at how Thor's costume has changed from Thor to the Avengers and Thor: The Dark World. On how Thor's look had to change between his solo-movie which saw him surrounded by similarly dressed Asgardians to The Avengers where he's on The Helicarrier surrounded by the likes of Iron Man and Captain America. Charlie Wen: In “Thor,” he was more warrior-like. It was more of a battle-ready costume. [“Marvel’s The Avengers” director] Joss [Whedon] wanted more super heroes on this one, and we went in that direction. You see the blues in Thor’s costume more in this film, which blend better together in that way. The effect is that [the heroes] do gel together better,...

Apparently these characters are really obscure. I’m not familiar with them, and likely most comics fans aren’t either. But hey, speculation is always fun!
So, from left to right, we have: Growly, Stabby Guy; Gloomy Walking Tree; Two Guns; Tenacious, Gun-Wielding Raccoon; and Sword and Cape Lady. They’re on some kind of rocky alien planet with two moons and what looks like a fleet of snowflake-shaped starships in the sky behind them.
(Though apparently they're called Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, and Gamora, respectively.)
