Late 2010, 20th Century Fox announced that James Cameron was returning for two more "Avatar" installments, with "Avatar 2" hitting theaters in December of 2014 and "Avatar 3" will follow in December of 2015. Things have apparently changed, since producer Jon Landau now tells Empire magazine that "2014 will be a tough date for us to make. It's about getting it right... Movies make release dates; release dates don't make movies." He confirmed that work on the sequels has already started. "Weta are already working and we have our core team, (animation supervisor) Richie Baneham and (digital effects supervisor) Nolan Murtha, working with us. And we're working on underwater performance capture."...

20th Century Fox was hoping to get James Cameron's Avatar sequel released in theaters in December of 2014. According to the films producer Jon Landau that might not happen. He recently did an interview with Empire in which he said,
We're not naming dates, but I think 2014 will be a tough date for us to make. It's about getting it right. Movies make release dates; release dates don't make movies.
It doesn't sound like we'll get to travel back to the world of Pandora until 2015 at the earliest, maybe even 2016. He goes on to reveal that the movie is currently in development, and reveals what their team is working on,
We've started already. Weta are already working and we have our core team, (animation supervisor) Richie Baneham and (digital effects supervisor) Nolan Murtha, working with us. And we're working on underwater performance-capture.
Underwater performance capture!? We'll that sounds like something new,...

With the 3D "Titanic" re-release having gotten a lavish premiere and big promo push in the UK this week, producer Jon Landau has been out doing interviews. Chatting with Empire, the topic of "Avatar" sequels came up.
Last year it was thought that the next two films had been loosely targeting a December 2014 & 2015 release. Then in January this year Landau let slip it'd be a while longer - as much as two years further in fact (he later downplayed his comments).
This week he re-affirmed the suggestion, albeit in a carefully worded way - "We're not naming dates, but I think 2014 will be a tough date for us to make. It's about getting it right. Movies make release dates; release dates don't make movies".
Despite being a long way off, Landau says work is well underway - "Weta are already working and we have our core team, (animation supervisor) Richie Baneham...

In October of 2010, Twentieth Century Fox announced that James Cameron's Avatar 2 was targeted for a December 2014 release and would be followed by Avatar 3 in December of 2015. Producer Jon Landau now tells Empire that "2014 will be a tough date for us to make. It's about getting it right... Movies make release dates; release dates don't make movies." He does say they have started working on the sequel already, however. "Weta are already working and we have our core team, (animation supervisor) Richie Baneham and (digital effects supervisor) Nolan Murtha, working with us. And we're working on underwater performance capture." Regarding the underwater scenes, he added that "It's going to be like the Floating Mountains in the first movie....
