Ice Cube said he never expected to be onstage accepting a gilded gramophone with his fellow N.W.A members, but that’s what happened Saturday when he, Mc-Ren, DJ Yella and the mother and son of late rapper Eazy-e received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy at the Recording Academy’s Special Merit Awards.
“My man, Dr. Dre, is not here. He wanted to make sure I let you know he’s not hating. He a billionaire. He got shit to do,” Cube said to laughter and applause. He thanked Dre for his “brilliance,...

The 2022 Grammy Awards broadcast wrapped up with an upset victory of sorts, with Jon Batiste beating out the likes of Taylor Swift and Kanye west to take home Album of the Year for his excellent “We Are.”
That was his fifth win of the night, following four wins during the “Premiere Ceremony,” where all of the awards not deemed cool enough for television were handed out, hosted by the always wonderful Levar Burton.
Batiste also accomplished a rather ignominious milestone for the Grammy Awards themselves: He’s the first Black artist to win Album of the Year since Herbie Hancock back in 2008. You read that right: It’s literally been 14 years and 3 presidents since the Academy recognized the work of Black artists with this honor. And in case you’re wondering, the only nonwhite artist to win Best Album during that time was Bruno Mars in 2018.
Speaking of Mars, Batiste...

Brothers Osborne, nine-time nominees, won their first career Grammy award during Sunday’s streaming Grammy Premiere Ceremony. The duo of Tj and John Osborne won Best Country/Duo Group Performance for their introspective song “Younger Me,” written shortly after the duo’s singer Tj Osborne came out as a gay man.
“I never thought I would be able to do music professionally because of my sexuality and I never thought I would be on this stage accepting a Grammy,” Tj said, his voice cracking.
“I want to thank my younger self for pursuing this,...

A version of this story about Jackson Browne and “5B” first appeared in The Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine.
Originally, veteran singer-songwriter Jackson Browne turned down the idea of writing a song for “5B,” the documentary by Paul Haggis and Dan Krauss about the nurses and doctors who served in the first AIDS ward in San Francisco in the 1980s.
“I initially said I didn’t have the time to do this, and normally I don’t willingly sign on to something like this,” he said. “I’ve written songs for movies before, and it can be a very long process for me to get something I like. So I pretty much said no, and he said, ‘Well, I’ll be hoping your time opens up. You’re still my first choice.”
But Browne found the film very moving — “it fills in so much about our humanity,...

It could have gone either way. As Season 12 came to a close, it was a toss up in the minds of many as to who would take the coveted title and become the next American Idol (TV). As far as Kree Harrison was concerned, she was just honored to be in the final two. As her friend Candice was announced as the winner, Kree could not have been happier for her, and graciously accepted the role of this year's runner up. Kree sat down with journalists the morning after the Idol finale to answer questions about her life-changing journey and the limitless opportunities that lie ahead for her. It was her birthday, and she had just been informed that she had been invited to sing at the Grand Ole Opry, a lifelong dream of hers. The 23-year-old singer from Nashville, Tennessee was having a happy birthday, indeed. And this was just the beginning.

Before Eminem could make the heart-wrenching "Space Bound" a hit single, the song's producer, Jim Jonsin, had to rework the track, which he had previously recorded with British songwriter Steve McEwan.
"It was actually a full song with verses, b-section, chorus," Jonsin told MTV News of the original Eminem-less version.
"Me and Steve McEwan actually wrote the song, we actually did it here in New York on guitar — it was just a guitar vocal on an iPhone," the multiplatinum producer said. "We took the idea later in Miami, like three months after, and produced the track, and we sent it out to Eminem to see what he thought about it. He loved it. So...
