Update Saturday: The Winchesters executive producer Jensen Ackles weighed in on the series officially ending after no new network home could be found.
“With a massive Network shift coupled with an industry strike…welp…that’s some unfortunate timing,” he said on Twitter, thanking fans who rallied to try and save the show following its cancellation by the CW.
Previous Friday: The Supernatural franchise is coming to end — at least for now — as The Winchesters has not been able to get a second season anywhere. Producing studio Warner Bros. Television’s efforts to set up the Supernatural prequel series at another network or streaming platform following its cancellation by the CW have been unsuccessful. All possible avenues have been exhausted, and the search for a new home has come to an end, despite a strong #SaveTheWinchesters campaign led by series executive producer (and Supernatural star) Jensen Ackles.

“Looks like we got work to do,” writes The Winchesters executive producer and narrator Jensen Ackles on Twitter Thursday. Ackles has taken to social media in an effort to mobilize Supernatural fans on a campaign to find the canceled Supernatural prequel a new home.

Supernatural alum Ackles reprised his role as Dean in the CW series and served as executive producer.
Knowing cancellation was likely coming, The Winchesters studio Warner Bros. Television has been preparing to look for a new home, and plans to be aggressive in its efforts, we hear.

A couple months ago, Robbie Thompson – showrunner of the Supernatural prequel series The Winchesters – expressed uncertainty as to whether or not his show was going to get a second season now that The CW is being retooled. Now it’s official: The CW has cancelled The Winchesters after just one season.
Kung Fu has also been cancelled after three seasons. The CW provided the following statement to Variety: “As we reimagine the new CW, we had to make some tough programming decisions. We thank our partners at Warner Bros. and the casts and creative teams of Kung Fu and The Winchesters for all their hard work, creativity and dedication.“
The Winchesters‘ chance of continuing appeared to drop in a major way once Mark Pedowitz left as head of the network. Supernatural was already in its sixth season when Pedowitz joined The CW, but he was an established fan who had seen every episode to date.

The CW’s hit series “Supernatural” lasted a staggering 15 seasons, but it looks like spinoff prequel “The Winchesters” won’t be making it that far. In fact, it’s already been cancelled.
After just One season, The CW has pulled the plug on “The Winchesters.”
Deadline reports, “The CW has opted not to pick up a second season of The Winchesters. The news is not surprising; the Supernatural prequel was among the long-shot renewal prospects at the network under its new ownership as it focuses on unscripted and lower-cost scripted programming (primarily international acquisitions/co-productions) in pursuit of profitability.”
The good news for fans of the show? Warner Bros. Television is reportedly looking for a new home for “The Winchesters,” so there’s a chance it could be picked up by someone else.

“The Winchesters” has been canceled after one season at The CW, with the network also canceling the reboot of “Kung Fu” after three seasons.

In addition to Rodger and Donnelly, Bianca Kajlich, Demetria McKinney, and Nida Khurshid also starred.

So far, only the CW’s strongest existing scripted series, All American and Walker, have been renewed for next season. The three least likely, The Winchesters, Kung Fu and Walker Independence, have been canceled. Remaining in limbo are Superman & Lois and All American: Homecoming, which are believed to have the best chance (however small it may be), followed by Gotham Knights.

Drake Rodger, best known for his series-lead role as John Winchester on CW’s The Winchesters, has signed with Gersh for representation.
Meg Donnelly and Rodger star in the CW series as the future parents of Supernatural leads Sam and Dean. The Winchesters became CW’s most watched series debut in October 2022, with Rodger playing the titular role of young John Winchester returning home from Vietnam and where he uncovers traces of his father’s past with a secret organization.
Told from Dean’s perspective, The Winchesters follows the epic, untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world. Supernatural alum Robbie Thompson penned The Winchesters, which comes from Warner Bros. TV and CBS Studios.
Rodger’s early roles as an actor include supporting roles in Not Alone, Murder Rx and Terra Beach.

Will Joel and Ellie finally reach the doctors in “The Last of Us”? Will Michelle Yeoh take home the Oscar for best actress?
Both questions will be answered this Sunday, but viewers may have to make a choice about which answer they want in real time. The season finale of the HBO hit is up against the live telecast of the Oscars on ABC.
Of course, there’s an opportunity to see both. The Oscars begin at 8 p.m. Eastern; “The Last of Us” airs at 9 p.m. Viewers could begin their night watching the Oscars, click over to “The Last of Us”, and return for the ceremony’s last hour. That’s when the biggest categories are usually handed out, but that plan comes with the risk of missing any buzzy, unscripted moments. And if you choose to stick with the Oscars throughout? You risk spoilers on the fate...

The CW series Supernatural was already in its sixth season when Mark Pedowitz became head of the network, but he was an established fan who had seen every episode to date. And as the series continued through the 15 season run that Pedowitz enabled, the network head was so supportive that Supernatural stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles – who played monster-hunting brothers Sam and Dean Winchester on the show – came to think of him as “the other Winchester”. Pedowitz was still the head of The CW when the Supernatural prequel series The Winchesters was ordered, but last year Nexstar Media Group acquired a controlling interest in the network and Pedowitz exited his post. The Winchesters‘ first season just finished airing, and showrunner Robbie Thompson told TV Line he’s not sure if there will be a season 2 at The CW now that Pedowitz is gone.

The American Film Institute’s annual list of the best films and television of the year always includes awards frontrunners as well as at least one or two unexpected dark horses. This time, as usual, the list skewed largely toward mainstream studio fare like Warner Bros.’ “Elvis” and Sony’s “The Woman King,” Paramount Pictures’ “Top Gun: Maverick,” 20th Century Studios and Disney’s “Avatar: The Way of Water,” and Universal’s “Nope.”
However, also from Universal, “She Said,” which has struggled to connect with audiences at the box office and appears to be a straggler in the awards race, got a needed boost in the top 10. Universal also got an expected shout-out for “The Fabelmans” (director Steven Spielberg is on the board of AFI trustees). A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” Focus Features’ “TÁR” (director Todd Field is an AFI Conservatory alum), and United Artists Releasing’s “Women Talking” also notched spots.

The Supernatural spinoff’s Scooby gang is about to score a huge win: Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly) finally finds her missing monster-slaying dad Samuel (Tom Welling) in the December 5 midseason finale of The Winchesters. (Season 1’s six remaining episodes air in 2023.) But first, she and the other hunters have to destroy the arachnoid alien creatures known as the Akrida, along with their possessed leader, radio host Rockin’ Roxy (Bridget Regan), who has been using her show to lure rare beasts to Lawrence, Kansas. The good news: The group has a solid lead and is riding the broadcast waves straight to Roxy — as is Samuel. Tracking down Samuel, of course, is “really going to complicate things,” says executive producer Robbie Thompson, for both Mary and her hunter-in-training love interest John Winchester (Drake Rodger). Skip Bolen/The CW Mary has vowed to quit hunting if her dad is found…and possibly leave Lawrence altogether.

Step aside Peter Parker, Sony’s live-action spider-verse is finally introducing another web-slinger. The superhero Silk a.k.a Cindy Moon is set to have her own series on Prime Video and the Amazon-owned MGM+ (formerly Epix) thanks to Sony’s multi-year television deal with the company, and I have to say it’s about damn time.
Cindy Moon is a relatively new character in Marvel comics, debuting in Issue #1 of the 2014 run of The Amazing Spider-Man. Her origin is intertwined with Peter Parker’s as the radioactive spider that bites Peter also bites Cindy before it dies. However, Cindy’s journey after her spider bite is kind of a weird one that includes secret bunkers and multiversal vampires that only feed on Spider-beings.
Without getting too deep into the spider-verse lore, Cindy, Peter, and other Spider-beings across the multiverse that are referred to as “totems” have a unique life-force...

Sony’s intricate web of Spider-Man-related projects is spinning up plans for a spin-off series focusing on Cindy Moon, otherwise known as Silk. According to reports, a cluster of Marvel characters are scuttling toward the small screen after MGM+, and Amazon Prime ordered several live-action series from Sony Pictures Entertainment. The first project swinging out of the deal is Silk: Spider Society, with The Walking Dead’s Angela Kang acting as showrunner.
The deal to bring Sony’s Spider-Verse to streaming services has been in the works for a while. Arrangements to acquire the rights were a nightmare to organize, but now that a linear network for debuts is secured, the show can get on the road. Projects like Silk: Spider Society will debut on MGM+ (which is changing its name in January), then go to Amazon Prime Video in the States. Amazon will also be the show’s international home across 240 countries and territories.

Amazon Prime and Epix are strapping on their web shooters. The streamer and linear channel have developed a deal with Sony Pictures Television to develop multiple television series based on characters related to Marvel Comics icon Spider-Man.
The first show ordered under this multi-series agreement is “Silk: Spider Society,” based on the Marvel Comics superhero Cindy Moon. The show will debut in the United States on the MGM+ linear channel, currently under the name Epix. Globally, the series will stream exclusively on Prime Video in over 240 countries and territories.
According to Amazon, the shows being developed under the deal are based on the “Sony Pictures universe of Marvel characters,” referring to the films that Sony has developed starring characters affiliated with Spider-Man — albeit without the wall-crawler himself. These films include the “Venom” series starring Tom Hardy, this year’s memed-to-death “Morbius,” and the upcoming “Kraven the Hunter” and “Madame Web.

A prequel to “Supernatural,” The CW’s brand new series “The Winchesters” premiered last month, with new episodes arriving in the coming weeks. How many episodes will be included in the first season? According to Deadline, not quite as many as “Supernatural” debuted with.
Deadline reports…
“Faced with their first decision on ordering more of the CW’s existing scripted series, the network’s new Nexstar owners opted against it. I hear there will be no back orders for the CW’s new fall series Walker: Independence, from CBS Studios, and The Winchesters, from Warner Bros. Television, whose freshman seasons will remain at the original 13 episodes.”
“Supernatural” typically featured 20+ episodes per season, and it seems the debut season of “The Winchesters” was at one point looking at the same lengthy run. This looks to be a cost-cutting measure rather than any sort of indication about the future of “The Winchesters,...

Four episodes into its debut season, "The Winchesters" was starting to feel too good to be true. The idea of The CW's 15-season behemoth "Supernatural" getting a spinoff was always a daunting prospect — after all, they've tried this many times before. While prior attempts never made it past their backdoor pilots, "The Winchesters" quickly got the go-ahead for a 13-episode season (plus the possibility of a full 22-episode order). But even when the show finally started hitting the airwaves, fans were plenty skeptical of the "Supernatural" prequel.
Told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester (voiced by Jensen Ackles), "The Winchesters" is the story of how his and Sam's parents fell in love and saved the world — a story that was already partially told by the Og series. So why craft an entire prequel around a romance we've already seen play out? I still don't have an answer for that,...

Richard Speight Jr. played the trickster Loki, or the angel Gabriel, or the angel Gabriel pretending to be Loki on twelve episodes of Supernatural over the course of that show’s fifteen seasons, and now it has been announced that he has reprised the role of Loki for episode 8 of the prequel series The Winchesters! The Winchesters airs on The CW at 8pm Est on Tuesday nights. It’s currently only three episodes into its debut season, so it will be a few more weeks before Speight shows up. Speight is also on board to direct a few episodes of the show. He previously directed eleven episodes of Supernatural.

It’s getting tricky over at The Winchesters! The CW has just confirmed that Supernatural alum Richard Speight Jr. is set to reprise his role as Loki on the eighth episode of the mothership’s prequel hit. As Spn fans know, Speight’s character is the Norse demigod and the original Trickster, described by the net’s release as being “as dangerous as he is wily.” Still sporting that “veneer of whimsy to mask his malevolence, Loki thrives on crooked games and sowing chaos — and Hunters are one of his favorite playthings.” Dean Buscher/The CW “Richard’s an old friend of mine, so it was a question of when, not if,” offers showrunner Robbie Thompson, who gives “total credit” to the show’s writers for finding a way to work Loki into the early Winchester lore. “I think it was in New Orleans actually when we were shooting Episode...

Saving people, hunting things, and tracking down a missing father? Although "The Winchesters" makes many much-appreciated changes to the DNA of "Supernatural," the prequel still shares plenty in common with its predecessor. So why not multiply the fun with the addition of some familiar faces?
Set in the '70s, "The Winchesters" follows John Winchester (Drake Rodger) and Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly) as they work to uncover their parents' mysterious past. Their story may take place decades before the events of "Supernatural," but what kind of prequel doesn't find an excuse to throw in some blasts from the past? This world is basically built for these kinds of weird, inexplicable circumstances!
The writers have magic, time travel, and God at their disposal — all of which are great ways to explain how a character from the distant future can appear in this prequel. And based on the words of showrunner Robbie Thompson,...

Two years after The CW said goodbye to Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) on “Supernatural,” the network has said hello to younger versions of their parents, John and Mary, for prequel series “The Winchesters.” Played by Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly, this version of the “Supernatural” couple is introduced to viewers at a time well before Sam and Dean are born — when John and Mary serendipitously run into each other when her monster-hunting father has gone missing. John, whose father also has been missing (since he was 4), is completely unfamiliar with this demon-fighting world but steps in to help his badass future wife. Rodger was cast by “The Winchesters” showrunner Robbie Thompson and “Supernatural” star Ackles to fill the formidable Winchester patriarch’s YA shoes.

The Winchesters has recruited a familiar face from Supernatural: Gil McKinney will reprise his role as Henry Winchester in an upcoming episode of the CW prequel spinoff, TVLine has learned exclusively.
McKinney first appeared as Dean and Sam’s paternal grandfather in a Season 8 installment of Supernatural, when he met his future grandsons via the wonders of time travel. That mission to stop the demon Abaddon ultimately resulted in Henry’s death, leading John to assume that his father had abandoned him. A Season 9 episode featured flashbacks to Henry’s time in the Men of Letters in 1958.

Ghosts, vampires, and werewolves are old news. Nowadays, if you've got plans for a supernatural saga with a "monster of the week" format, then you better have creativity on your side because a deep-dive into the wide world of folklore is an absolute must.
When the series first began in 2005, "Supernatural" welcomed this challenge, happily digging deep to tell the story of two brothers traveling across America to face off against not-so-mythological creatures. This meant everything from tricksters and changelings to grim reapers and hellhounds. For the initial five seasons that series creator Eric Kripke had planned, it was a brilliant opportunity to explore some lesser-known lore. But if you've heard tell of this long-running show, then you probably know that it didn't end with five seasons. "Supernatural" went on for a whopping 15 seasons.
Across 327 episodes, it really feels like Sam and Dean Winchester faced off against every monster there is.

After 15 years of airing the traumas and tribulations of Sam and Dean Winchester, The CW has finally decided to spice things up by creating a "Supernatural" spinoff that centers a monster-hunting duo with crippling daddy issues! Now, I know that sounds like the exact same show but trust me, it's very different. It takes place in the '70s now.
"The Winchesters" sends us back to the past to hang out with young Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly) and John Winchester (Drake Rodger), the future parents of Sam and Dean. These 20-something-year-olds have no idea that their future marriage will kickstart a saga of tragedy that nearly ends the world multiple times — but there's no reason to worry about any of that because it's far off into the future. Falling in love while hunting demons is certainly an odd way to start a relationship, but what else would we expect from "The Winchesters"?
A prequel series to the 15-season behemoth that is "Supernatural," the new CW series sees Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) returning to our screens to narrate the story of how his parents met, fell in love, and fought monsters while hunting down the truth about their missing fathers. Before tragedy finds Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly) ablaze on a nursery ceiling, she's just a young monster hunter who happens to cross paths with John Winchester (Drake Rodger), a soldier who has no idea that he comes from a long line of supernatural scholars. While Dean begins and ends the episode by setting the stage, Mary and John are the duo at the center of this story.

Building on a “beloved international treasure” like The CW’s “Supernatural,” which ran for 15 years and amassed an envious number of devotees, is not an easy feat, but “The Winchesters” showrunner and executive producer Robbie Thompson finds the daunting task as thrilling as it is challenging. Thompson, who was involved as a producer on the “mothership” for five seasons, was deliberate in crafting a world that paid homage to yet stood apart from “Supernatural,” crediting the creative team behind Chaos Machine Productions for its 1970s take on the preexisting universe.

“The Winchesters” star Meg Donnelly, who plays Mary Cambell in The CW’s prequel to “Supernatural,” prepped for the role with the same intensity it takes to fight monsters: There were Season 1 binges of the original series, stunt training and even self-taught Latin classes. But the Disney actress also credits Jensen Ackles, who portrayed her future son Dean Winchester for 15 years and serves as the spinoff’s narrator, for getting acquainted with the fantasy universe.
“Jensen on set was so helpful,” Donnelly told TheWrap. “He was there every day on the pilot, and he would give me so much advice — all of us. Little things like when I’m standing next to Drake, since he knew the height difference with Dean and Sam, he’d be like, ‘Just so you know, don’t sink into your hip when you’re standing next to Drake, like always stand tall, so you look taller next to him.

When horror series “Supernatural” debuted in 2005, no one thought it had the potential to last over 15 seasons. The series stayed on so long that it garnered multiple generations of fans, and found stars Jared Padelecki and Jensen Ackles marrying their co-stars in real life. But after over a decade of the longest monster hunter road trip in history that took siblings Sam and Dean to hell and back, (a few times), the series came to an end in 2020. And closed a chapter on the longest running and one of the most impactful genre shows in history.
Six months after Sam (Jared Padelecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester drove their beloved Impala “Baby” off into the sunset, “The Winchesters,” a prequel series focusing on Sam and Dean’s parents John and Mary Winchester, was announced. “The Winchesters,” premiering on The CW Tuesday night, is the first “Supernatural” spinoff to make it to air.

Disney starlet Meg Donnelly, best known for her roles in the “Zombies” franchise and “Hsmtmts” Season 3, knew all too well the pressures associated with entering the sacred space of a beloved franchise like The CW’s “Supernatural.” The actress will be spearheading the prequel series “The Winchesters,” playing Mary Campbell, the eventual mother to fan-favorite characters Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki).

“The Winchesters” is an interesting “Supernatual” spinoff choice, because not only is it spinning off established characters like “Wayward Sisters” (its second spinoff pilot that didn’t go to series) had attempted to, it’s creating a new world with established characters whose very canon that this show is tackling was already established in “Supernatural.” Because “The Winchesters” isn’t just a spinoff, it’s a prequel: about how John Winchester (Drake Rodger) and Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly), father and mother to “Supernatural’s” Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester, met and fell in love. The story of John and Mary was told multiple times over the course of that show’s 15 seasons, thanks to the magic of time travel and flashbacks — and, well, magic. But most important, what was established about John and Mary was the fact that while Mary came from a monster-hunting family, she got...

Supernatural fans know the story of Mary and John Winchester… or so they think. That’s where the upcoming prequel, The Winchesters, which includes vets from the original series such as Jensen Ackles (who also reprises his role as Dean and narrates) and Danneel Ackles as executive producers and Robbie Thompson as the showrunner, comes in. Meg Donnelly and Drake Rodger are stepping into the roles of Mary Campbell and John Winchester, and they share their excitement about doing so in the video interview above. As Rodger notes, he went through nine different chemistry tests (totaling about 22 hours) during the audition process.
