When faced with an overwhelmingly unexpected situation where the law and order of the state are involved, we are psychologically conditioned to do one of two things. Either confront it head-on or let it decide the course of our lives. Whichever option we choose will define us as the kind of humans we aspire to be. In Spanish filmmaker Elías León Siminiani’s The Asunta Case, another true crime thriller streaming on Netflix, a middle-aged couple is accused of murdering their adopted child. This upended their world instantly, and they had to suffer the wrath of the legal system. At the moment, they choose to fight to prove their innocence. The six-episode web series is based on a real-life incident that created a stir in Spain in 2013. It can be christened an intriguing miniseries, and the style and the pacing are engineered to heighten our curiosity. But beyond the pale of integrity and intentions,...

The investigative thriller The Asunta Case(El Caso Asunta), starring Candela Peña and Tristán Ulloa, tells the story of one of the most shocking true crimes in Spanish history. In 2001, a baby from China named Asunta Fong Yang was adopted by Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra, a well-to-do couple living in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Thirteen years later, she was found dead. Her parents, who’d reported her disappearance, were later arrested for her murder. As the news rippled across the country, the question on everyone’s mind: Why?
Directed by Carlos Sedes and Jacobo Martínez, the series was created by Ramón Campos (Gran Hotel), Gema R. Neira (High Seas), Jon de la Cuesta (Estoy Vivo), and David Orea (Jaguar). Campos directed the 2017 documentary about the case, El caso Asunta: Operación Nenúfar, originally titled Lo que la Verdad Esconde: El Caso Asunta.

It's no news that every now and then a certain genre or subgenre becomes more popular than all the others. For a long time, the TV world followed the Westerns, but now it seems that true crime dramas are on the rise.
With the recent success of Netflix's drama Baby Reindeer, which follows Richard Gadd's real-life story of being stalked by a woman, several other true crime dramas have recently premiered on the platform.
But only one of them ended up right next to Baby Reindeer on Netflix's Global Top Chart, and that's the new investigative thriller called The Asunta Case. The miniseries unravels one of the most shocking true crimes committed in Spain.

Just a few weeks ago, Netflix covered the hijacking that happened in the 1970s in Colombia through The Hijacking of Flight 601. There is no dearth of true crime stories that this streaming giant has covered. The Asunta Case was released on April 26, 2024, and it was created by Ramón Campos, Jon de la Cuesta, Gema R. Neira, and David Orea.

Exclusive: The upcoming Apple TV+ series Land of Women is adding four cast members to its roster: Amaury Nolasco (Hightown), Santiago Cabrera (Star Trek: Picard), Gloria Muñoz (Dangerous Moms), and newcomer Victoria Bazua. Production is currently underway in Spain.
Nolasco will play Kevin, the trainee hitman after Gala (Eva Longoria), and her family. Excessively worried about his physique and his number of followers on social media, he holds just enough malice for the job.
Cabrera will play Amat, who has lived in La Muga for only a couple of years. While he likes to keep to himself, he has a heart of gold and has quickly earned the affection of the townsfolk… and perhaps even Gala’s. He spends most of his time among the vines and in the little winery that he shares with the village co-op.
Muñoz will play Mariona, Julia’s (Carmen Maura) estranged sister. Though childhood best friends,...

Now & Then is a brand new series to come out of Apple TV, launching this weekend. The series, which is set in two simultaneous periods of time, focusing on the past & present day, it’s a show that blends romance, drama, action and thrills – all with a great big dollop of nostalgia. It also showcases the talented pool of Latin America performers and creative talents working in the industry today – and to mark the show’s release, we had the pleasure in speaking to the majority of them.
We speak about nostalgia, of their own pasts and whether they too have stayed in touch with close friends from their youth, while they talk about bringing such a wealth of Latino performers together, and how positive this can be for the industry. Madrid — Bambú Producciones, a key driving force behind the international boom in Spanish TV fiction, is entering into a phase of business expansion, tapping showrunners Josep Cister and Diego Sotelo and boosting film production brand Mr. Fields & Friends Cinema.
Founded in 2007 by Ramón Campos and Teresa Fernández-Valdés, and minority owned by Studiocanal, Bambú has produced a large list of high-profile TV dramas led by “Gran Hotel” and “Velvet,” whose success, especially in Latin America, proved that, for the first time ever, there was a mass audience abroad for original Spanish series.
“We are at a time when, given the market demand for Bambú content, we have decided to grow, incorporating names as important as Cister and Sotelo,” Campos told Variety.
A former TV fiction director at Lagardère’s Boomerang TV in Spain, Cister has been responsible for series such as “Old Bridge’s Secret,” “The Time In Between,” “Acacias 38” and “Presumed Guilty.

Berlin — Spanish broadcast network Atresmedia and Bambu Producciones teamed on two milestones in the international outreach of Spanish series: “Gran Hotel” and “Velvet,” whose avid audiences, especially in Latin America, proved there was a mass audience abroad for original Spanish series, not just their formats. Atresmedia and others – Netflix, for example – took note.
Having linked for “Fariña,” one of the biggest free-to-air hits in Spain last year, Atresmedia and Bambu are back with “45 Revoluciones.” Shooting from October, a trailer for the 13-part series was presented by Atresmedia Television’s Antonio Salso, head of acquisitions and sales, on Monday afternoon at a Berlin Drama Series Days Spanish TV Showcase. Its pedigree is instantly recognizable.
Created by Ramon Campos and Gema R. Neira, the series is produced by Bambu’s Campos and Teresa Fernandez Valdés and Atresmedia Television head of fiction Sonia Martínez, also a guiding spirit of Atresmedia Studios.
