Opposition to the Academy’s plan to award eight Oscars prior to the live telecast continues to grow, with more than 350 new names — including more than a dozen Oscar-winning editors, cinematographers and production designers — added to the petition sent last week to Academy president David Rubin urging a reversal of the plan.
Among the industry professionals signing are Oscar-winning cinematographers John Seale (“The English Patient”), John Toll (“Braveheart”) and Dean Semler (“Dances With Wolves”), and Oscar-winning editors Richard Chew and Paul Hirsch (“Star Wars”), Mikkel Neilsen (“The Sound of Metal”), Pietro Scalia (“JFK”) and Zach Staenberg (“The Matrix”).
Oscar-winning production designers Hannah Beachler (“Black Panther”), Barbara Ling (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”), Adam Stockhausen (“Grand Budapest Hotel”) and David and Sandy Wasco (“La La Land”) also signed on.
Cinematography will be presented during the live show, but editing and production design are among the eight awards to be presented during the 4 p.

Last week on “The Voice,” the knockout rounds commenced with two artists getting sent home: Casmè for Team John Legend and Ryan Berg for Team Gwen Stefani. That left 26 artists still in the running to win the Season 19 championship, with many more about to be eliminated during Monday’s two-hour episode. Gwen was the only coach to use her last save of the season (on country singer Ben Allen), which meant John, Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton still had the power to swoop in and save an at-risk contestant before the all-important live shows. How did Night 2 of the knockouts play out, and what advice did mega mentor Usher give to the remaining artists?

The Voice Recap: As the Knockouts Began, Two Contestants Sang What Turned Out to Be Their Swan Songs
The Voice’s coaches could feel their power slipping through their fingers in Tuesday’s kickoff of Season 19’s Knockouts. After this round is over, the fates of the contestants would be in the audience’s hands. So Blake Shelton, for one, was going to savor his last chance to “make the decisions that make the difference — whatever that means.” In his case, it meant making a boneheaded choice that might ultimately have helped significant other Gwen Stefani take another big step toward her first win as a coach. Read on, and I’ll explain how.

The blind auditions and the battles are a thing of the past, which means it’s now time for the knockouts on “The Voice.” In this round each coach pairs up two artists who’ll then perform their own songs on the big stage. One artist survives, the other is eliminated … unless a rival coach “steals” them for their own team. This year’s mega mentor was Usher, a former coach who prevailed in Season 6 with Josh Kaufman. Heading into the knockouts for Season 19, each coach had seven artists still on their teams:
Team Blake Shelton: Ben Allen, Ian Flanigan, Jim Ranger, Jus Jon, Worth the Wait, James Pyle (stolen) and Taryn Papa (saved).
Team John Legend: Bailey Rae, Cami Clune, Casmè, John Holiday, Tamara Jade, Lauren Frihauf (stolen) and Julia Cooper (saved).

Gwen Stefani has been a dependable coach on “The Voice” through the years, sitting on the panel in Seasons 7, 9, 12, 17 and now 19. Even though the rock star has yet to take an artist across the finish line, she’s found happiness in other ways as the girlfriend of “Voice” mainstay Blake Shelton. Now that the Season 19 blind auditions and battles have concluded, can she prevail for the first time on NBC’s reality TV show? Team Gwen’s current group of artists will next get pared down in the knockouts before facing off in the all-important live shows.

Head-scratching choices are par for the course on The Voice. But usually, it’s the coaches’ moves that we call into question, right? Not Monday, though. The thing that made us — or at least me — go “hmm” was the show’s decision not to round out the Battles with the epic, epic one that went down between Team Kelly Clarkson’s Marisa Corvo and Ryan Gallagher. That was some Eurovision Song Contest-caliber firepower on display there! And if you read on, we’ll discuss not only what made it so remarkable but all of the evening’s performances.

Heading into Tuesday’s episode of “The Voice” Season 19 blind auditions, all eyes were on Desz. In the previous outing, this 30-year-old Houston resident became the season’s latest four-chair turn artist thanks to her powerful rendition of “Un-Break My Heart,” but the episode ended on a cliffhanger before she picked her team. Did Desz become the latest member of Team John Legend, Team Blake Shelton, Team Gwen Stefani or Team Kelly Clarkson? And what other artists wowed the coaches in Tuesday’s hour-long episode?

As The Voice’s Season 19 Blind Auditions continued Monday, two contestants made a big impression — one by demonstrating the vocal prowess of someone twice (three times?) his age, the other by outdoing Kelly Clarkson on one of her own songs. And if you read on, we’ll go over not only their tryouts but that of a would be rasp-kicker whose chance to join Team John Legend was thwarted by Gwen Stefani’s Block.

After the first two episodes of “The Voice” Season 19 blind auditions, coach Kelly Clarkson had an early lead with five artists on her team: Joseph Soul, Eli Zamora, Marisa Corvo, Madeline Consoer and Ryan Gallagher. Meanwhile, Kelly’s co-judges Blake Shelton, John Legend and Gwen Stefani each had four artists apiece heading into the third episode. By the end of the blinds each coach will have 10 artists on their teams, making a Top 40, so we’re almost halfway there already. Which coach do you think acquired the best artists on Monday night?

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Social Distance,” streaming now on Netflix.
No shows in the time of coronavirus got a pass on pivoting from original production plans — not even Netflix’s “Social Distance,” a show that was born out of the pandemic itself and therefore anticipated some of the tougher elements right from the jump.
In May 2020, the stories for all eight episodes of Hilary Weisman Graham’s anthology series had been written and the show was days away from shooting when George Floyd was murdered. A few of the writers took part in a protest and Graham tells Variety that she came back realizing she had “a voice at this moment in time and I’m going to f—ing use it.” So she told her team she was scrapping the original finale episode to instead write a new one that responded to the moment.
